Yes, I've often thought a good English slang approximation for じゃん might be "innit"!

I got my JLPT certificate in the post this week. It's beautiful. It has my name on it and a load of Japanese. I can't quite believe I actually did it.

JLPT preparation for December is going ok I think. I'm trying to do one reading practice question a day, which over time should hopefully get me covered for reading, grammar and vocabulary. I'm starting off by finishing the medium and long passages from the Unicom N3 reading book, which on the whole feel slightly more challenging than the ones that were in the real exam, so it should be a good bridge. Either way I'm picking up lots of useful vocab, kanji and grammar points from it. My general plan is to focus on the reading for the next two months, then widen things out to cover listening and a bit of "language knowledge" in November.

I've also started doing a bit more "fun" reading and have a couple of books on the go - the challenge is to actually finish them! I've also started getting into an anime series for the first time in a long time. This series is Monster, and it's a pretty serious thriller.

Somehow or other French has started to creep back into my life. I've no great aspirations at present but on a few occasions recently I've been surprised at how much I can still understand. I've found myself doing silly things like picking up the odd copy of Paris Match from the newsagent in town, which I then actually sit down and read! Just having that reassurance that French is still there for me as a reading language is quite a pleasant surprise and I'm keen to take advantage of it from time to time.

German is also trundling along somehow. I'm not doing Assimil every day now. But I am doing a few chapters a week and it's working out just fine. I'm only a few days off starting the active wave and I'm quite curious how that will feel.

凄い. I think it's awesome that you're doing the JLPT 2 this December. It's quite a step do go up a JLPT
level in 6 months I think. I'm probably going to sign up for JLPT 4 myself ;(. The practice questions seemed
tough to me..well some of them. Some were really easy. Go figure.

Well if I'd had the time or inclination to do it last year, I think I would have passed N3 in December, although with a lower mark. So it's not quite a 6 month leap of madness!

In a way I treated N3 as preparation for N2 - to get myself used to the format and procedure for the exam before going for a more difficult test. I'm also treating the exam in December more like a mock exam, it's just for the experience. If I pass it will be ぎりぎり. I don't mind taking it again in July next year.

Have you tried the official test paper for N4? Are the tough questions because of a lack of knowledge, or just because you're not used to the format of the questions?

Talk about getting back into French. I sat down tonight and read the first volume of Astérix, which I picked up in Paris earlier this year. It didn't take too long and I found it about as challenging as ドラえもん, but rather a lot more fun (although I have to say I'm quite getting into ドラえもん too now). Think I'm going to have to order myself the next one...

Offical what? On the site you can take some sample questions.. that's what I've done so far. I haven't done
more than that.   To be honest I felt that the questions were harder than high beginner. But it's their test so
who am I to argue.

This year they finally published an official practice test for each level. It's made up of a selection of questions from the exams they've held so far and is in the same format/same number of questions that you will get on the test itself. It's the best indication you can get of what each level really feels like (short of taking the test itself) and I would consider it an essential purchase for anyone considering the exam. Plus, for a Japanese book, it's not too expensive! The N4 practice paper is available on White Rabbit here

I went ahead and bought those tests - the N4 and the N3. And I got New JLPT N3 Taisaku-mondai & Yoten-
seiri for Reading comprehension, Grammar, & Vocabulary. Couldn't resist. I love that store. Just hate the
shipping costs! I held out and went for their cheap shipping. 2-4 weeks (by boat?) who knows.
