Here's the idea: everybody will learn a language they haven't studied at all yet for 6 weeks, everybody at the same time. Afterwards, we test our vocabulary, grammar, comprehension etc. to see 1) in which languages were we able to make the most progress and 2) which methods worked out best.

I'm tempted to join in the fun. I'd picked up the Michel Thomas 8 CD German course at a used book store a couple years ago and it's been just sitting on the shelf. Perhaps that and a small book like Essential German Grammar would be doable in 21 or so hours. Not that I think that's enough time to develop any real proficiency, but it does make turn on the light of hope that the fledgling student has that "I'll learn a foreign language".

I'd actually prefer a dialog based course, but don't want to shell out for this experiment. If anyone is aware of a Assimil like course for German, that would actually be my preference.

Luke,

Try here
I listed two books that would fit the bill. Either one would work.

I am in. Its funny i tried this same experiment with some co-workers of mine but we gave up because we were all too busy in our professional and personal lives at the time. I would like to give it a go again. Haitian Creole is my choice. How will we be evaluated? When i came up with this experiment, we chose the same language which was Hindi. At the and of 6 weeks we would have had an interview of sorts with a native speaker of Hindi to grade who could handle themselves the best conversation in Hindi. There is free material from the Indiana University language link that one of the members posted here.   Its called Ann Pale Kreyol

I'd like to do Swedish, but I would be using the FSI program, which I guess a lot of people would be using.

Since I already have some material for Turkish, Romanian and German, I'll probably pick one of those.

I'll start on Monday, despite that I have a dreaded Russian exam in two weeks. However, I think I'll be able to cram 30 minutes.

Who knows, maybe somebody here has already started.
