A great movie for those looking to learn Spanish.."En la Cama" free at the library..The whole movie takes place in a bed with a hot couple who met in a club( You never see this..All the movie takes place in a bed)
and have a one night stand..great dialogue on relationships..sex..dating..beautifully shot hot scenes! and filmmed in Argentina.. Real Words for real life!in every scene..the only phrase book you would ever need in Spanish! you will not be able to take you eyes of the couple ..you hang on their every words..steamy love scenes..sexy..and great relevent words that you will see again in your morning Spanish nwewspaper. I have been doing this living as a native from day 1 now with my Scandanavian language
here is an email i just sent to a friend ..I have only been disecting the movies..and reading in the language..everything i outlined in this thread on this site for 2 or 3 weeks..I am sure there are mistakes but i am happy!..i have only been living in this language for 2 weeks! here is my email without even thinking Hej Vicky..Hur mor du?..Det var bra att pratar med din mormor (hoppa du forstor min svenska?) I hope you had a bra tid at Visby. Your Grandma sounds like a very nice lady. Are you going to be home on Friday ..Saturday or Sunday. I finally have a weekend free and am going to hang out with my sister but jag vill att pratar med dig Send me a time that is good and I am sure we will speak this time. Take care...Hej dor! I totally believe this account. I've met many people online who just seem to pick up language by ear. Though I've watched a lot of anime for over a decade and have yet to learn much from it, and I heard a lot of Finnish and some Japanese as a child and picked up nothing. Since I've been studying with flash cards and grammar, I am hearing more words I've learned, surrounded by blah, blah, blah. Sometimes I'll hear a sentence, and I feel like I understand all the words, but then have zero recollection of what I just heard. Is that odd?
I think Japanese might be a bit of a stretch, but I'm hoping that with just traditional studying I'll maybe eventually I'll have more to grab onto and be able to acquire more language by ear. Obviously, I'm not going to learn Kanji by ear, so with this language, some amount of book study is a necessity. >Just start speaking and dissecting movies Wait, I see. >I rewind a movie scene maybe 5 times..just absorbing the words.but it must be a scene >that you love..not every scene..I have discovered a world of foreign films that blows >hollywood away.. It was pretty arduous, and often I'd run into a line in Japanese even with English subtitles, even with pausing and restarting the video over and over and then using a dictionary, I'd still be stumped what they were saying. Do not try to figure out the word..do not try and translate.. Enjoy the movie!..Disecting a movie for me is hanging on every word because I am really into the story..Do you love Romance movies..watch it in your new language.. you must be drawn into the story..Watch the first 1 or 2 times with subtitles(just to be drawn in deeper to understand..NOT for word by word translate)
If you love a great scene..watch it 3..4..5..times! Key: Listen to the words..Example..Love the word "casa" don't think "casa"..means "house" you are not studying ..you are enjoying the movies! My brother has watched Batman over 40 times and knows every line by heart.. Here is a good way to disect a movie 1. Watch the movie..1 or 2 times with subtitles 2. next day ..watch it again without subtitles.. 3. watch the movie 5 more times over the next week..rewinding on scenes and dialogue you love.. As you read the newspaper in your new language ..and SPEAK to people in your new language ..you will see the same words from your newspaper and your movies..the only words you need will always come back..again ..and again.. Trust me your brain knows these words ..it is a lazy genius.. I spoke to my Family..co-workers..and Starbuck waiter in my new Scandanavian today..just start using the words you know..Jeg vill har hot coffee They sometimes just take your order..they only hear coffee!..but as you use these new words your brain figures ..i guess we will be using these words again so it remembers them easy.. Use you Japanese today!..Sprinkle it in with your English.. Movies will tell you how to say Hello..good morning..how are you....give me a cigarette..i love you.. better than any phrase book..I have never watched a movies that does not use these phrases..also feel free to put the subtitles back on..only for understanding of the plot NOT for word for word translation Do not spend a penny on any language course.. The best one is free FSI..the the best part is you just look at the English and you know which words are outdated..since FSI is a little old.. hope this helps..please feel free to ask any questions..take care 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Svenska! I actually met some norwegians last week ..I listened to a family speak in a cafe for about 10 minutes..I asked Ar du Svensk and they were norwegians..i love how the dad was singing as he spoke..beautiful people the norwegians are...I just watched Kyss by Vinter last night..shot in Norway..beautiful..I will be watching it again tonight ofcourse and tommorow..hejdor Edited by healing332 on 09 July 2009 at 7:27pm 1 person has voted this message useful | |

I'll confess to catching myself parroting Pimmsleur in a few conversations. It's expensive, but I wouldn't dismiss Pimmsleur, aside from being a little bit boring at times.
I'm sure the cognates from English to Spanish help, and I suspect what happening is that you developed the ability to hear cognates, and that combined with some random exposure to Spanish language and a bit of hard work was just enough get you to the point where you can now pick up other words from context and the Spanish became self-sustaining. To find the same words in both Japanese newspapers and TV would require watching TV that's subtitled in Japanese. I have seem some movies subtitled in Japanese and it does help me understand. Come to think of it, I should try to track down some Japanese scripts. Maybe I could construct a home-made 'anime Assimil' type program this way. The Studio Ghibli movie DVDs sold in the USA, for example, have English subs, but the Japanese is never subbed. Blahh. 1 person has voted this message useful |
