Sunja, would you mind if I used this idea for my new language log? I'd like to do something similar with young adult fantasy novels in my target languages (Spanish, German, and Mandarin), including but not limited to Harry Potter.

Again, love this log, and I'm looking forward to following it if you decide to pick it up again.

I'm happy that this log can still inspire! If you decide to start with your three languages -- have you decided what book to do?

I've just been handed the first "Twilight" in English. I haven't read it yet. I know Yesasia.com carries Japanese and Mandarin versions... I'm soo tempted to buy it, but I'm already on a budget!

Reading the same thing over in two more languages would be a bit insipid, I guess.

Actually the story has enough humor that it never gets boring. That line from Hagrid "Ah, go boil yer heads,..." makes me chuckle just to think about it! Reading that in different languages is always interesting!

I've read the books about a gazillion times in English alone. Was a big fan of HP
growing up. Read the books long before they were adapted for the big screen. There was
a 3 year waiting period between Goblet and Phoenix. Most agonizing wait ever,
especially since He Who Must Not Be Named had just been restored to his former glory.
The only fix was to read the first four books over and over again (as well as Quidditch
through the Ages and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them).

I think I'm going to go with Cornelia Funke's Tintenherz to start off. I've never
read the book in any language, and I've heard lots of good things about it and I look
forward to the challenge.

I'll probably read the chapters in a similar order to the way you did it: first Spanish,
my best foreign language, then Mandarin, and finishing with German.

I can't wait to get started...hope my Chinese copy arrives from interlibrary loan by the
end of the week so I can get a good start by the end of the year.

My daughter and I are big fans of Cornelia Funke! My daughter reads Hinter verzauberten Fenstern (1989) every year during this time. It's about a magic Advent calendar.

I also haven't read Tintenherz yet but I've seen the film.

In any case, I think this is a great idea. I can already feel progress with my German in just two weeks.
