Ok I was just reading through this log and I decided I don't update enough about what
I'm learning! So last chapter we learned about household things (rooms, furniture, etc.) and genitive singular. Now we are learning about family, work, and how to say people's ages. The grammar is mostly about genitive plural. 2 persons have voted this message useful | |||

Well, I'm getting back into Russian and Spanish now that spring break is over. Today I
am supposed to be finished with chapter 7 in Golosa which includes the things I mentioned in the above post. I just want to say that I hope genitive plural is the hardest case! ;P Just kidding, it's not so bad. I just think that seeing everything laid out in charts the way it is in my book makes it look kind of overwhelming. And individually it's not hard to learn all the different cases, but when you learn them one after another like we are, they start to all blur together. I like Georgian cases better, they're easy! But on the other hand, there's those verbs... :S I guess every language has its hard things and its easy things.... Anyway, I am supposed to write a story about myself, so I will write it here, but later because I need to review the genitive plural again!... Ok, here it is. :) It's not really a story, it's just something about me.
У меня маленькая семья. У меня есть мать, отец и младшая сестра. У меня нет брата. Моя сестра моложе меня на четыре года. Папа 58 лет и мама 53 года (I'm pretty sure this is wrong but I don't know the right way to say it...) Mоя мама по профессии медсестра, но она уже не работает в больнице. Она теперь работает дома, на компьютере. Папа тоже работает дома, а иногда также в офисе. Честно, я не понимаю, что он делает на работе! Моя сестра еще не работает, потому что ей только 16 лет. Она учится в школе, на очень трудных курсах! Она довольно умная дедушка. У меня есть бабушка. Ей 84 года. девушка=girl :)))))) you write so well! only a few things, we use the dative for age, so it's папе 58 лет etc. and i still find it fascinating how young can mean so many things in English... in russian it just means "not old" or even "having a not-old appearance" :) so just like you say младшая сестра, you say she is младше тебя. моложе is mostly used as an adverb - выглядеть молодо, выглядеть моложе своих лет (to lookn younger than you are)... you can even say "она младше меня, но я выгляжу моложе". there's normally that undertone of a decent youthful appearance there. i suppose it's complicated really. it's easier to just use старше haha... in fact i'd say "он старше своей жены на 5 лет" is neutral while "она моложе своего мужа на 5 лет" implies he's too old for her in your opinion. i randomly remembered a thread title here, "choosing a language for a younger sibling" or something:) i've just realized that it was actually pretty neutral! i think i'm only now fully understanding this stuff haha. back when it was an active thread it sounded like this to me: "ah my sibling is so young and excited about the future and i want him/her to have career opportunities, what language should he/she choose?" omg. we call it разрыв шаблона, a tear in the established pattern. lol. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

also курсы are either evening classes (or not actually in the evening but something in addition to your main education) or refer to the year you're in at college/uni, like the freshman/junior etc stuff. without much context i'd assume she's about to finish high school and attending some difficult preparatory courses for university. if you hadn't mentioned her age i'd assume she's about 21 and is in her last or second to last year at uni (btw we don't really call uni school... my friend from ukraine does though, her uni was officially called академия and this is too formal haha).
what you probably meant is best expressed by "она скоро закончит школу, и у них сейчас большая нагрузка". у них because it implies the whole class is having a difficult time now - if you say it's hard for HER to study it will mean she's not very bright so she's struggling. advanced stuff, omg. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

So, I just wrote something in my Georgian log and I decided to try and write it in Russian too. It was hard and
I had to say some things differently because I have very different vocabularies in these two languages! But I tried my best! :) Сегодня, я хочу говорить о русском языке. Я изучаю русский язык в университете. Я думаю, что это трудный язык. Я думаю, что русский язык труднее чем грузинский язык. Я очень люблю русский язык, но трудно мне писать по-русски. На русском языке не знаю много слов, поэтому не могу писать много. Но я знаю много плохих слов. Я знаю эти слова потому, что я смотрю израильские программы, и в Израиле любят ругаться по-русски. На грузинском языке, я знаю только одно плохое слово. Но я не люблю говорить такие слова. :) 1 person has voted this message useful |
