I wish I could get myself to take the JLPT 3, but I'm aiming for the JLPT 2. There is a HUGE gap between the two.

Haha there wasn't even a JLPT "3" before. And there's still a huge
gap. I found the JLPT 4 to be challenging myself so I'm not sure that any JLPT is really easy. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

The huge jump from JLPT 3 to JLPT 2 is the reason that the new exams include an N3 level that sits (supposedly) between the old "3" and old "2".
There was a JLPT 3, I have the past papers to prove it. What there wasn't was a level corresponding to the new N3. That one sits between the old JLPT 3 (new N4) and the old JLPT 2 (new N2). I'd agree that none of the levels are "easy". You obviously have to prepare for whichever one you are aiming for. It's taken me 18 months to get from scratch to the point where I think I have a decent shot at N4. If I knew then what I know now, I could probably have shaved 6 months off that. But then it would much more focussed and less fun. The JLPT levels are, for me, just a yardstick with which to objectively measure progress. Time to review my goals for June.
1. Keep up the Kanji reviews at Reviewing The Kanji. I've managed to keep RTK updated every day. 2. Keep up with Anki reviews (vocabulary, kanji and sentences). I've not kept everything up to date every single day, but I've always caught up within a few days. I've not learned too many new words, as I'm trying to consolidate what I have before the upcoming JLPT N4. 3. Keep the memrise N4 course watered and keep the retention rate above 80%. I'll also try to keep the N5 course watered, but if I run out of time this will be the first thing to go. I have kept the N4 and partial N3 courses watered, but I have let N5 slip. In fact I'm going to let N5 go now, although I may water it again in a month or two. 4. I will continue to work through JLPT 3 past papers. I'll aim to average two complete papers per week. Allowing for marking and analysis, that's about 2 hours per paper, so 4 hours per week. I did manage one more complete paper since posting my goals, but life got in the way. 5. Thoroughly revise the remaining lessons in Minna No Nihongo. Right now I've completed the first 30. So at two per day I should be done in time to leave a few weeks for other revision. That shouldn't be too onerous as I've been through all of these before. Each lesson takes about 45m. I've completed lesson 49, so it's just lesson 50 to go. Again, life got in the way of completing this as quickly as I'd hoped, but at least I have completed it. 6. I will keep the audio going during the commute but one specific target will be to learn and shadow at least 4 of the JLPT 3 audio tracks. I managed to shadow 3. Still that's better than nothing! It is in London and I am planning to pop in to those two. Luckily it looks like they'll both be open but the SOAS bookshop is almost certainly shut. I'm thinking of picking up the four みんなの日本語 中級 books but although the grammar books are reasonably priced, the online shop only shows the 本冊 with CDs, which makes them somewhat pricey ... hopefully the non-CD versions might be on the shelves. I might pick up the N3 So-Matome 文法 and 読解 books too. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

Don't bother with the somatome books. If you want an n3 dokkai book get the unicom one
instead. And if you're getting the Minna no Nihongo books anyway you'll be covered for the grammar. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

I've seen the Unicom Level 1, 2 & 3 books (on the net, I've not read them) but generally if it doesn't say "new" or N3 or whatever then it relates to the pre-2010 tests. I have seen an old Unicom Level 3 book (on scribd) and I did like the layout. I'll have a look when I'm there and see what's actually in stock: I suspect my problem will be will not overfilling my rucksack! 1 person has voted this message useful |
