SECOND VIKING CHALLENGE I've learned about the use of capital letters in Swedish (probably in other Scandinavian languages as well) and wanted to do the challenge and put a small explanation with it to help myself & others (please correct any mistakes made). The use of capital letters in Swedish is different than it is in English. Capital letters are used the same way as in English when: - It's a beginning of a sentence: Hur mår du? - After a colon in direct speech: Hon sade: “Hur mår du?” - To show respect: Herren, Hans Majestät Konungen. - In proper names: Ingvar Andersson, Volvo, Malmö, Danmark. However, there are many words in Swedish that are spelled with small letters, where they would be capital letters in English: tisdagen den 8:e januari – Tuesday the 8th of Januari påsk, midsommar, jul – Easter, Midsummer, Christmas All the names of the days of the week and the month: måndag, tisdag, onsdag – Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday augusti, september, oktober – August, September, October For example: I Sverige börjar vintern redan i slutet av oktober. In Swedish all the names of languages, adjectives to describe national origin, nationalities, religion, political affiliation and those deriving from a place name are all written with a small letter: svenska – Swedish engelska - English socialdemokrat – Social Democrat stockholmare – Stockholmer For example: Jag pratar svenska och engelska. Hon är socialdemokrat. Han är stockholmare. Swedish also has a capital only in the first word in names consisting of two or more words (unless any of the subsequent words is itself a proper noun): Den helige ande – the Holy Spirit Peter den store – Peter the Great Förente staterna – the United States but: Republiken Sydafrika – the Republic of South Africa My 3 sentences for the challenge: Jag är holländsk men jag lär mig svenska eftersom jag älskar Sverige. Jag kommer att besöka Sverige i mars och jag ska försöka att tala bara svenska när jag är där. Jag har träffat en fransman, tysk och en holländare i måndags. EDIT: Only the first word in titles of books or films gets capitalized. So ‘War and Peace’ becomes ‘Krig och fred’, ‘Silence of the Lambs’ becomes ‘När lammen tystnar’ and ‘The English Patient’ becomes ‘Den engelske patienten’. **CORRECTIONS** Jag är [holländsk]/holländare men jag lär mig svenska eftersom jag älskar Sverige. Jag kommer att besöka Sverige i mars och (jag) ska försöka att [tala bara]/bara tala svenska när jag är där. Jag [har träffat]/träffade en fransman, en tysk och en holländare i måndags. Thanks for the useful reminder, it was very helpful when I tried the Challenge myself. Perhaps for completeness’ sake you might want to add the fact that only the first word in titles of books or films gets capitalized. So ‘War and Peace’ becomes ‘Krig och fred’, ‘Silence of the Lambs’ becomes ‘När lammen tystnar’ and ‘The English Patient’ becomes ‘Den engelske patienten’. I added it to the post! 30 DAY CHALLENGE - DAY 5 - Read 26 pages of my book - Learned 15 new words - Watched 3 episodes of "Myrsteriet på Grevenholm" and the movie "Låt den rätte komma in". - I spoke Swedish for 30 minutes - Read 10 news articles That brings the total to: - Pages read of book: 73 - New words learned: 75 - Watched series/movies: 10 hours 40 minutes - Swedish spoken: 3 hour 15 minutes - News articles read: 62 I'm almost done with my first Swedish book. I'm going to start in a new book when I'm done and then read the first book again and see if I understand more of it, since I have a few things I do not yet understand about the book. Things that are important for the story. I understood around 60% of everything, I hope this will be around 80% next time I read it. I have a small tip for the beginning language learners, something that helped me quite alot when I just started with Swedish. I would suggest you buy some lables and start putting them on pretty much everything in your house, with the Swedish (or your target language) name on it. The first 2 weeks my table had a sticker with: Ett bord, my window had a lable with Ett fönster etc. It helped me alot and just after two weeks I could pretty much name everything in the house, without really having to learn it, because I just got confronted with the words. 30 DAY CHALLENGE - DAY 5
- Read 0 pages of my book - Learned 15 new words - Watched the movie "Jalla Jalla" (1 hour 28 minutes) - I didn't speak Swedish. - Read 12 news articles That brings the total to: - Pages read of book: 73 - New words learned: 90 - Watched series/movies: 12 hours 8 minutes - Swedish spoken: 3 hour 15 minutes - News articles read: 74 I didn't read and I didn't speak any Swedish yesterday because I was very tired and had a long day at work, which means I have some extra catching up to do with reading and speaking, which is no problem. I had a bad night of sleep because I have a sleeping disorder. It is called a Sleeping Paralysis (If you want to know more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_paralysis). Hi Kez
I took a look at your log and we have a lot in common, since the reasons we have started to study our languages to our study methods :) It is very nice you are managing to talk to your girlfriend in Swedish, I confess this is one of the points I need to improve. I think it is a shame that even having one to practise with, sometimes I just can't find the time to do it. But I will do my best to stick to it. Yesterday, for instance, my conversation in Danish with my husband took time from 1:20 to 1:50 AM! @AnaV Our ways of studying are indeed quite similar, i'm doing this 30 day challenge to
get a rhytm in my studying. I hope that, by doing this challenge, I will get used to read/listen/watch & speak every day and that I won't stop after this. I'm hoping it will become a habit. And I know that it's still hard to speak with your partner, eventhough you really want to. I'm having some trouble talking with my girlfriend as well because it's just so much easier to speak English. And we're both used to speaking English with eachother because our realtionship has always been in English. I wonder if 1 day it will become a 100% Swedish relationship. But to be honest I think that me and my girlfriend will always speak English with eachother when we're just together, and switch to Swedish when there are others around. 30 DAY CHALLENGE - DAY 6 - Read 45 pages of my book - Learned 5 new words - Watched 2 episodes of 'Mysteriet på Grevenholm' (30 minutes) - Spoke Swedish for 45 minutes - Read 15 news articles That brings the total to: - Pages read of book: 118 - New words learned: 95 - Watched series/movies: 12 hours 38 minutes - Swedish spoken: 4 hours - News articles read: 89 I have finished reading my first Swedish book! It was a good feeling to end the book and actually understand quite a big part of the story. There are still a few things in the book i'm not sure about so I will read it again later. I hope that when I read it again I will be able to answer some questions I have about the book. I've started reading a new book yesterday, which I hope to finish in 2 weeks aswell (~300 pages). Yesterday I also made the decision to stop learning words for now. My Memrise account tells me I have learned around 2400 words, which is enough. I'm going to focus a bit more on actually using those words, instead of learning more of them. I'm just going to repeat the words i've learned everyday so that I will be better in using them. Maybe I will do a Mini-Challenge everyday instead of learning the 15 words. I'm also looking for some good Swedish movies to watch, suggestions are welcome!
