How many languages to be a polyglot? | ||

I think you should be fluent at 4 languages at least. It isn't 3 because
there are many examples of bilingual people that need to learn only one more language in order to be called polyglots. I'm an example for this, speaking 2 languages fluently because the parents didn't learn Hebrew when we immigrated, and I don't feel that I'm going to become a polyglot when I'll get to grips with English. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I think that it depends on the situation. If one can speak 1 Germanic, 1 Slavic and 1 Latin language, you can call yourself a polyglot. I voted 5 for the exact same reason! Whenever somebody is supposed to be really smart, they always "speak five languages"--never four, never six. I don't know if that's just in my experience though. I also agree with the poster who said that it matters if they're all in the same family or not. 1 person has voted this message useful |
