2014-15 Super Challenge & 2014 goals accomplished

Hello to all my new TAC 2013 teammates. I will be part of the Romance Team PAX, the Croatian Team Divan, the Russian Team Mir and the Slavic-Romance Team Nebun this year. Hopefully my teams will not fall apart this year. Last year, there were a number of us that made it to the end of the year, but there was very little interaction among many of my teammates. This year, I am confident we will do much better!

My name is Kerrie, and I am a single mom of beautiful 10 year old twin girls. They are my world. I am an English tutor, and I work (mostly) from home. This is so much better than the job I used to do, working in a factory, and it gives me some time to work on studying languages.

I found out about 15 months ago that I have celiac disease, and a whole host of other food intolerances. (Don't worry. All this means is that I can't eat wheat. And rye, barley, gluten. Potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, eggs, corn, milk, and bananas. And eggplants, but I don't miss those!) Everything I ate was making me... Sick. Tired. Sore. Sleepy. Unfocussed. Yuck. Blah. Blah. Yuck. And now that I've figured that out, I can focus now. I'm healthier than I have been in 15 years. I *finally* made a lot of progress in Spanish and French last year, and almost made it through Assimil's Italian with Ease. I spent some time with other languages, but those three were my main focus for the year.

This year, I am going to work on my Spanish and French the most. I am doing the Super Challenge for both of them. 100 movies, 100 books, 100 writings.

My goals for Spanish for 2013:
Finish 100 books (100 pages) (so far 10/100)
Watch 100 movies (90 minutes) (so far 35/100)
100 (200 word) Writings (so far 20/100)
Active Vocabulary of 15,000 words

My goals for French for 2013:
Active wave and shadow Assimil
Finish 100 books (100 pages) (so far 1/100)
Watch 100 movies (90 minutes) (so far 48/100)
100 (200 word) Writings (so far 54/100)
Active Vocabulary of 10,000 words

I have decided those are my only definite goals for 2013. My secondary languages are Italian, Croatian, Portuguese, and Russian.

My goals for Italian for 2013:
Finish Assimi Active wave and Shadow
Watch 100 movies (33/100)
Read 10 books (100 pages) (0/10)
50 (200 word) Writings (28./50)
Active Vocabulary of 7500 words

My goals for Croatian for 2013:
Complete Assimil Le Croate, plus Active wave and Shadow
Complete Colloquial Croatian and Serbian
Watch 100 movies (10/100)
Active Vocabulary of 4000 words

My goals for Portuguese for 2013:
Complete Passive wave of Assimil
Watch 100 movies
Listen to Harry Potter audio books

My goals for Russian for 2013:
Complete Assimil Russian, including Active wave and Shadow
Michel Thomas Russian course(s)
Active Vocabulary of 4000 words

Other goals for 2013:
Assimil Le Coréen Sans Peine
Assimil Le Turc Sans Peine
Assimil German with Ease

I learned throughout the course of the 2012 TAC that I set too many goals for myself. Too high, too. I want to work on Italian, Croatian, and Portuguese, but Spanish and French will come first. I am also hoping to sneak Russian into the mix with Assimil and Michel Thomas, as soon as I'm finished with the passive wave of Italian with Ease. We'll see.

I want to get back to Assimil's Turc Sans Peine, German with Ease (I've already worked through half of that), and Le Coréen, if I can find the time. I'm halfway done with German, and the Korean and Turkish books are only 71 lessons long, so it's certainly a possibility. Maybe for a six week challenge. I have always wanted to learn Turkish. It's a gateway between the east and the west. It's Turkey. Istanbul. So much culture and history there. Then a friend of mine got me hooked on Turkish dramas, and now I am totally a lost cause.

Likewise, I somehow fell in love with Korean dramas over the past year, and would love to learn to understand them without subtitles. I really don't have a desire to learn to speak Korean, but who knows. Maybe I am really an Asian freak at heart and haven't realized it yet. I really want to make my way through Le Coréen (or start working with another Korean textbook, but I have no idea which one) so I can start to understand their language and culture a little better.

I've thought about Norwegian, Hungarian, Greek, Dutch, Catalan, Swahili, Polish, Czech. Any of those would make for a nice Assimil excursion for half an hour a day if I find the urge to expand my horizons, although Polish and Czech will have to wait until I have a more solid grasp on Croatian and Russian. :)

I recently discovered that I can add a lot of vocab to Anki relatively easily, and I can use Anki on my phone. I figure 25 words a day (for Spanish and French) is about 9000 words. For Italian 20 words a day will bring me to about 7500. For Croatian, 10-12 words a day will bring me to a respectable 4000 words by the end of the year.

This year I am setting concrete, countable goals. For me, that is much easier to work towards than saying that I want to be a B2 or a C1 in a certain language. My goals are still high, but I think they are mostly achievable. I often get frustrated with French, but I'll be damned if I let it beat me. Super Challenge, here I come!

None of the team names are official yet. I'll change them if/when we actually decide anything. We're still a few weeks away from the new year, and no one seems to want to make any decisions. :)

But if those are they names we choose, at least they all fit. Until I add Russian in the mix. LOL

Let's go Team PAX! Quick question: how do you count/evaluate your active vocabulary? I would think that counting
active vocabulary would be an even harder exercise than counting passive vocabulary.

I use Anki. I'm pretty sure I have at least a few thousand in Spanish and French, so if I aim for 9000ish new words for the year, I will be well over my goals.
