This will be my ログスレッド for TAC 2013 (Team Sakura 桜, 日本語).
Obviously nothing will appear here until January.

This is a placeholder for my self-introduction. It will be written soon, honest :-)

This is a place-holder for any on-line resources I use.

I think the first page or so of the log is too valuable to waste on random updates so
this is another place-holder. I'm sure it will come in handy.

My first "real" TAC update. These are just some random thoughts regarding where I think
I might be heading.
Over Christmas I bought four Japanese books:
Reading Japanese with a Smile (Tom Gally)
Living Japanese: A Modern Reader (Bookman, Fuji & Mishima)
A Homestay in Japan (Allen, Watanabe)
A Japanese Reader (Miller)
I've not done anything with them yet, but I'm planning to start with "A Japanese
Reader" very soon now.
I also received the Berlitz "Japanese in 30 Days" as a gift from my brother; I'm
planning to work through the JPOD101 Upper Intermeiate seasons before I start this one.
I'm managing about 8 lessons per day whilst commuting, so probably 40/week. There are 5
seasons to go and ~25 lessons per season, so it's going to be about 3 weeks before I
look at Berlitz. I suspect that it will be too basic, but even the basic FSI courses
have included some useful new vocabulary (yes, I am that much of a beginner!) so I'll
work through it anyway.
I also plan to go through the FSI Japanese Headstart course (the longer one; I've
already through the FAST course briefly).
That'll leave me the JPOD101 Advanced blogs to listen too (probably too advanced at
this stage, but I want to listen to them even if only to make sure I'm not missing any
parts). After that I'll start working through the few Japanese DVDs I have.
I sat the JLPT N5 in December 2012. Regardless of whether I passed or not, I want to
sit the N4 either in the summer or in December 2013. How I did in the N5 may affect
whether I go for July or December. I don't want to let it drag on any later than
December as I found having a target helped me to push myself with getting through the
grammar. I'm going to work through at least one chapter of Minna No Nihongo II each
week; perhaps more if I find it not too taxing.
Assuming I do get through MNN-II, I'm not sure what to move to next. "Japanese for
Everyone" seems to have some fans, as do the Kanzen Master series.
If anyone has some recommendations for JLPT N3 and beyond, I'm all ears.
I'd also like to get into more Japanese native material (films and anime I guess). Any
recommendations along those lines would be helpful. The only thing (apart from JPOD101)
that I've watched is 日本人の知らない日本語 (Nihonjin no shiranai nihongo). I could foolw
that with subtitles, but without subtitles I could just pick out the odd word but
almost no complete sentences. That should give you some idea of where I am with
Japanese!
My goals for 2013 are to take the N4 (the N3 would be a stretch-goal, but probably too
much of a stretch I guess), to finish Minna no Nihongo II and to get to the point where
I can write a coherent sentence and hold a short conversation.

You're a bit behind the times, dampingwire. We're team Sakura桜 now :D

I agree completely, and I like the way you express it. Maybe it's just because it's early in the morning, but it gave me a chuckle.
Won't "Japanese in 30 days" be a little elementary for you if you can do Jpod's upper intermediate series? It sounds like a beginner text to me...
