So, this whole dissertation thing is working out great. I took it easy during last week and slowly started reading the relevant literature. That meant I had enough time for myself and, of course, for languages. Русский Я не делал очень много на русском языке. Níl mé rograitheach, ach is féidir liom rá go leor. Is í an Ghaeilge teanga an-álainn í agus taitníonn sí go mór liom. Damn, I want to get back to Icelandic again sometime soon. I have wanted to properly
study that for ages but something keeps getting in the way of Icelandic. I thought I'd start this year but I still haven't been able to... even though I've already been to Iceland and dying to get that one right. Even took a few classes in it on iTalki... I envy you for the Icelandic, that is a language that I sorely miss studying but I never seem to be able to do it justice. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Don't worry, tarvos, you'll get there one day!
I fully understand your fascination with this language. I like it very much, too, but I notice my grammar has deteriorated, so I will need to do some brushing up. I'd love to go to Iceland one day and use this insanely complicated language "for real". I think Colloquial does a nice job giving you an introduction to the language, but you need to listen to and speak the language in order to get your grammar straight, so the patterns get kind of "automatized". So, taking iTalki lessons might be a good idea. I also like watching "Viltu læra íslensku?", but unfortunately there's only about 20 episodes of it. Well, maybe I'll order some books and films from Iceland in the near future. If only the shipping fees weren't that expensive! 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Too bad! It really isn't easy to get hold of native speakers of smaller languages. Although even my lang-8 entry in Scottish Gaelic was corrected!

I could get a hold of a native Icelander, I'd just have to convince her to not speak
English with me, also because we haven't spoken in months. Finding Icelanders isn't hard. But finding one who's willing to tutor you at the same time is harder. And also, I'd rather not do tutoring of Icelandic right now - my level is too low. I'd rather just work through the textbook, get the damn thing sorted, and then go into action so I can target questions. (Also, my tutor was one of those people who is a once-in-a- lifetime find - Icelander who studied medicine in Maastricht and thus spoke fluent Dutch. Thus our classes and explanations were in Dutch. For Icelandic, that is really rare). (I would do speaking, but it'd be just casually. Not to study). But right now I've decided to focus on doing French in-depth. I want to bring it up to a professional level. It's not bad as it is but I could do with the perfection also in the details. Are you going to continue with all the beautiful new languages too? I usually do that, but I find it refreshing to return to French now. I haven't appreciated French the way I have in months. I love French. 1 person has voted this message useful |
