Arekkusu and I have decided to try something new: a TAC Tandem. Our language goals are
very compatible:

I can help Arekkusu with German and Esperanto, possibly Chinese.
Arekkusu can help me with Québécois and Japanese.
We may both try to re-activate Italian/Spanish this year.
We may both dabble in Thai or Portuguese.

A tandem may turn out to be more motivating than a large team; we'll keep each other on
track.

Here's to a successful TAC 2013!

Well, I've started the year with Pimsleur Romanian. First CD is done. I doubt I'll be studying Romanian seriously, though; this is just to acquaint myself with the language.

I'm presently doing the Tadoku focussing on Modern Greek - I started over a week late
though. I'm also revising my Dutch as I'm involved in the production of another series
for DutchPod101.

I set a goal of reading something every day and also having a foreign language
conversation every day, since I'm notoriously bad at getting speaking practise. This goal
helps: yesterday I spoke Japanese with my tutor, today I got myself invited to the
Italian Lunch, tomorrow I shall have breakfast with a Québécois guy and Friday it's
another Japanese lesson.

In the case of Québécois, I think you'll have to replace reading with oral material -- such as Yvon Deschamps monologues. Lots of material in there, I'm sure.

I seem to have acquired a play that contains Québécois that I could read ;-) but I
generally agree about the need for oral material.

Pimsleur Romanian Experiment

I decided to give Pimsleur Romanian a try and see how the course is. I've used Pimsleur
before with Norwegian, but I already had a foundation in it; in the case of Romanian, I
knew absolutely nothing about the language, except that it has cases (which I have yet
to see any sign of in the course...).

I'm now midway through CD3 (out of 5). It's obvious that the whole course could only
leave me with very, very basic knowledge of the language. The first two CDs were rather
slow and unchallenging, but the 3rd one picked up a bit and it's getting more
interesting. I only listen to the CDs once, as the material is regularly repeated, and
I try to do one track per day, sometimes 2; ie. I haven't skipped a day yet, in which
case, it might become necessary to review a previous track.

Since the absence of writing is part of this course's experience, I have no idea how
these words are spelled, other than from some kind of mental image I am developing as I
go along. One issue is that there are a few confusing vowels and I wish I could pin
them down with writing. Vowels that sound like some kind of mid high and mid central
unrounded vowels remain partly a mystery, but I'm making a point of tracking them down
and trying to acquire a better sense of them as I progress. Certain changes like
'roman' to 'romanka' (forgive the spelling; I am just guessing here) bring some kind of
vocalic centering but I have not idea yet whether this is an active or inactive
process.

It's also difficult to remember or work out verb conjugations without seeing a complete
table. I have no idea how 1st sing and 2nd plur are derived, either from each other or
from some other intermediate form. This is a bit annoying, but I'll play along.

Another interesting point is intonation and stress. I'm starting to get a sense of
them, but stress obviously doesn't work exactly as I initially expected. Sometimes, a
final vowel sounds stressed even though I know it's not, from other utterances. I'm
still listening for that.

Finally, for some reason, I keep saying 'ne' instead of 'nu', which I suspect is
Esperanto interference.

I really like the idea of a tandem TAC. It seems like an extremely efficient way to stay
motivated and push forward.
