This last week hasn't been as good for my language studies as I had hoped. There are a few reasons for this; procrastination, unforeseen changes in plans, and I think I actually do better at studying my languages when I'm in school, since last week was my spring break I had too much spare time and failed to use it well. I focused on Finnish and Afrikaans grammar and Spanish was often left out, though I did find a good book on Spanish grammar at the library. I haven't read very much of this book yet, but it looks like I will get a concise explanation of basic grammar rather than the piecemeal approach.

                       En los ratos libres, me gusta mucho escuchar y bailar la música y leo libros. Yo juego baloncesto, fútbol, y fútbol americano. Pero tambien paseo en bicicleta. Mi familia y yo tomamos televisión y visitamos los parientes. Yo no decido dónde quiero ir en el verano de 2009, pero deseo viajar mi hermano Júan en Indiana.

I may post a summarized English translation in another post, but now I want to study Finnish.

I won't provide an English translation of the brief paper I wrote for my Spanish class right now, but I did get the paper back and somewhat surprisingly I got 45 points out of a possible 50 for a score of 90% and I would like to make some corrections to it. I will post the corrections from my teacher one paragraph at a time with the corrected words in bold type.

This paragraph isn't too bad, two spelling mistakes and I forgot the correct usage of "en" and "a".

There are more mistakes in the second paragraph, but apparently nothing the teacher deemed to be serious errors.

Spring quarter begins Monday and my schedule is different, my first class is at 11:00 am which will give me two hours in the morning for studying languages.

congratulations you had a very good grade for this essay!!!!! Here all the work is out of a possible 20, but seldom you have 90%, but for exapmle 70%. The belgian teachers are veyr strict I think.

there are two general things, which i've noticed in your essay, which you can make better I will explain you (sorry if you understood already):

Mateo le gusta mirar: it's different that in our languages, because with gustar, the person who like the thing isn't the subject but the objetc. You must change the verb for the thing also, not for the person, i give you an exapmle:

Me gusta el chocolate
Me gustan chocolates
No me gustan tripas
No me gusta el invierno

the other thing, « Pienso historia y lenguas extranjeras son interesantes.» the adjective has to match, which in English isn't necessary. this if for the m/f/pl

el pájaro es pequeño
los pájaros son pequenõs
la silla es roja
las sillas son rojas

Thank you for the advice, Jar-ptitsa. I do know the things you mentioned, but I don't always remember them. I will continue making improvements and additions to the paper to get more practice writing in Spanish as I learn more vocabulary and grammar.

It's been almost four months since I began TAC and I reckon it's time to assess my progress, and perhaps revise my original goals. I had initially thought I would study Spanish and Afrikaans, and maybe Dutch, German and French, but the reality is that I am now studying Spanish, Afrikaans, Finnish and occasionally Dutch. German and French will have to wait for next year and most likely I will also add Italian, but that's 8 months away. Keeping this log has been helpful, because it provides a way to record what I'm actually doing, but I didn't always stick to my schedule and most often the reason was procrastination, not school work. I sometimes allowed my self to become distracted by other intriguing languages; some like German, Limburgish and Danish are either on my hit list or are closely related to languages I'm currently studying and thus it make sense to look at them briefly, others like Inuktitut (which I didn't mention in this log) or Hungarian (very distantly related to Finnish) are not closely related and fascinating though they undoubtedly are, these detours took up valuable study time.

So what do I need to work on? I need to follow my schedule and study plan, something which should be easier now that my first class is at 11 insted of 10. The desire for wanderlust must be kept in check, I simply must remember that Inuktitut, Hungarian, Georgian and Chinese aren't any more intriguing than Afrikaans, Spanish and Finnish. I will probably do another language studies assessment in June, right now I've got to get something to eat and then get some more studying done.

This week hasn't been as bad as last week was for language studies, but I've nearly gotten off track. For example, a few weeks ago I found what looked like an interesting paper on the human brain written in Afrikaans and I intended to read it but haven't yet and in fact, Afrikaans has been getting less attention of late, which is inexcusable if I wish to continue making progress. It's weird that I looked again at my original goals a couple of days ago but this week has been crazier than I expected; next week will be better as I adjust to my new schedule at school and the work required in my classes. I also need to learn more Finnish words along with the grammatical stuff I'm learning so I can actually read, and hopefully write something in the language; the grammar of Finnish is important, something I'm reminded of whenever I attempt to read and understand anything written in Finnish. I just need to find the best way to balance learning grammar and learning vocabulary. This leaves Spanish, I need to review stem-changing verbs and vocabulary as I would like to take my next test in my Spanish class on Monday or Wednesday.
