I had to planned to post a message in Finnish, but I can't because I have come down with hay fever (I often get sick this time of year, lousy spring weather!) and I am still learning vocabulary and grammar. I hope to get over this hay fever soon and then I will post more in this log.

Mick EDIT: I added something I originally meant to write.

When I wrote that I was learning more grammar, I should also add that most of the information I find about Finnish grammar seems to focus on the case endings and not so much on the verb tenses and conjugations. So I am making some progress learning the cases; and they are important since there are 14 of them, but I also need to learn a little more about the verb tenses and conjugations if I want to write or say anything. I've complained about Finnish, or rather my frustration with the learning material that I am finding for it, long enough.

Now, onto Spanish. I'm not sure that I have learned very much Spanish in 5 months. Why do I wonder about this? First, I have to explain a little about my family's language background; my immediate family were all brought up as monolingual English speakers, this is not surprising since my parents don't know any other languages. Since graduating high school, my three younger brothers have all lived abroad; 1 in Bolivia, 1 in France and 1 in Chile; thus two speak Spanish fairly well and one speaks French. Sunday afternoon I had dinner with my family and during the conversation, my mother suddenly suggests that I say something to my youngest brother in Spanish; but I couldn't think of anything to say. No one was surprised when I was tongue-tied, as most of my family had forgotten that I'm learning Spanish, but it was still frustrating. I wonder if I'm focusing too much on simply passing the Spanish class I'm taking rather than actually learning the language. I'm getting hungry now so I'll eat something then study more Spanish and Finnish.

Yesterday afternoon I took a test in my Spanish class, and I didn't do well at all. I couldn't answer some the questions, mostly because I forgot the direct object pronouns. I was certain I had studied them and was very frustrated when I didn't remember them at all. Fortunately I will get to take the test again next Wednesday. Obviously, I need to do better in Spanish, as it is the only language I'm curently studying that I know will be able to speak without traveling abroad. I believe I was right to be concerned about how well I was retaining the Spanish that I have learned; thus most of yesterday evening was spent studying Spanish. Afrikaans and Finnish were neglected, though I should be back on track today after I get some sleep.

Buenas noches

I just noticed that the keywords for my log include the term Mandarin, a language I'm not currently learning. Oh well, maybe I'll keep this log going for a few years and eventually learn Mandarin.

Today is Wednesday, the day I retake the test for my Spanish class, then I get to move on and finally begin learning the past and future tenses. Readers of my previous log might remember that I wrote that the Spanish class is a lab class which means that I can study at my own pace but the teacher is available if I need help with anything. I don't think the class is bad for me, but I wonder if perhaps I'm not progressing too slowly since I think by now I want to be reading authentic Spanish material such as newspapers and books. My next post (maybe it will be later today) is going to be about direct object pronouns in Spanish and possibly the other two languages as well, just so I'm learning the same thing in all three languages. Direct object pronouns were hard to remember in Spanish, but since I now understand the concept I'll make certain I learn all the pronouns for Finnish and review what I already know in Afrikaans.

Nähdään taas
Mick
EDIT: I corrected a few typos. My somewhat unrelated goal of improving my typing skills hasn't happened yet.

That's about the funniest reason for learning Chinese that I have ever seen.

This post may contain random, disjointed musings!! Read at your own risk
I had intended to post again Wednesday night, but I got sidetracked by a few things: The first one is math class (I'm behind schedule and suddenly realized I have much work to do if I expect to pass the class.), also I've become bored with studying the Bible in Afrikaans every day so now I will definitely be reading more newspaper articles, third I think I'm focusing too much on Finnish grammar and have not learned enough vocabulary which explains why I put off posting anything in Finnish and I've decided that I need to learn a little more vocabulary along with the grammar or I won't progress.

Maybe my brain is getting overwhelmed (or overloaded?) as I cannot find my notes on Afrikaans pronouns right now; therefore this post is not about pronouns. I've decided to learn or review all the pronouns I already know for my three target languages, and not just the direct object pronouns; it just seems easier that way.

I'm using a computer at my school instead of the computer at home and now I wish I had Firefox rather than Internet Explorer. Why do I like Firefox better? Firefox has a better spell-checker that actually checks the reply box for this forum. This computer only recognizes English, so it marks any word from other languages as typographical errors; but still this beats re-reading and editing my posts repeatedly or typing messages in Microsoft Word and then pasting them here.

Just wait til I explain a possible reason I might learn Persian. Strangely enough, my most recent attacks of wanderlust have been Chinese, though the mysterious characters are nearly impossible for me to write correctly, since I'm left-handed; and Swedish, which makes more sense as Sweden is west of Finland and the two countries have an intriguing history, so I may learn Swedish next year.

As for Chinese, the tones do indeed give it a uniquely melodic sound and beguiling rhythmic cadence. Having written that, I should add it's very likely I won't soon forget the frustrating experience I had late last night trying and failing to draw a proper Chinese character; so it will definitely be a few years before I get to Chinese, if ever.

Thus concludes my very confused post
Hasta luego

I hope that you’re ok. Probably your notes are in a place, and when you don’t think of them, you will find them ☺

Yes, I agree. Now I write all my posts in Word and copy-paste, but it’s ok because the reply on the forum has very small place for write and it’s not possible see all the post. Firefox is great. I suppose you refer the Locale Switcher? I use it as well. But, have you the same problem that firefox is not always fast? Today it’s good but the last weeks it functioned extremely slowly. How’s your spelling / typing without the spellchecker? My Word checker is weird: it find that all the things are Finnish!!! LOL!! this would be for you ok ☺

Don’t worry, it wasn’t confused at all but very logical and good I think. Hasta luego.

That's actually what happened, I came home from school and rested for a bit and suddenly remembered where my notes about Afrikaans pronouns were and now I have them.

I've only used Firefox a few times, and earlier today was the first time I'd looked at this forum using Firefox. I'm at home again now, and am back to using my regular computer with Internet Explorer. When I write on paper I almost never make any spelling mistakes in English, but my typing is terrible, and I've noticed that spell-checkers don't catch every mistake, I often type "who" when I when I meant to write "how". I'm not yet prepared to use spell-check in Finnish, but it will happen soon.
