Maybe I'm getting just a little too ambitious. Yesterday I attempted to write about Swedish grammar in Afrikaans; which was a bad idea. I'm still babysitting my 10-month old nephew while his parents celebrate their wedding anniversary and figured why not try to teach him some Spanish. I don't think he learned anything but he loved hearing me speak it. Hopefully I will post my next message here Tuesday.

Hasta luego

't is baie irriterend wanneer jou pc nie werk behoorlik nie (of nie werk heeltemal nie) ... Ek ben reg nou op reis en moet gebruik internet kafees, so ek het nie my gebruiklike programme nie , en die taal stelop is anders - baie frustrerend!

Ja, ek moet met jou saamstem, dit is inderdaad baie irriterend. Ongelukkig ek kan nie te internet kafees gaan nie, omdat ek het geen geld nie.

I agree with Iversen that it is irritating when my pc won't work. but right now I can't spare even a dollar or two to visit internet cafes; though Washington has many of them.

Sometimes I feel like this log becomes me making excuses as to why I don't post as often as I'd like; especially since I didn't post anything last week, but I have what I think is my best excuse ever! I was too involved (or maybe engrossed) in studying languages, mostly Finnish. I've just been working though my copy of Teach Yourself Finnish and supplementing that with reading parts of Finnish: An Essential Grammar. Next week school starts again so even if my pc is still not working I can use the computers at school. I found out something very interesting about Finnish, there is no verb that corresponds to the English verb "to have" but the same idea is expressed by using the following construction: the adessive ending lla/llä + "on"
minulla on (I have)
sinulla on (you have)
hänella on (he/she have)
meillä on (we have)
teillä on (you have) plural or formal
heillä on (they have)

I'm back! School starts again and I will definitely post more often. I've missed a lot, this website has made many improvements and the new features are great. I'm definitely going to visit the Spanish discussion room. Last week I did a brief comparative study of Finnish and Hungarian. I'm not learning Hungarian now, I just wanted to try find some similarities between the two languages and I found none. I know both languages are in the Uralic language family but they are about as similar as English and Persian, the respective vocabularies are completely different. Hungarian uses more postpositions (and I tried to make up a word for postpositions in Afrikaans, because I can't find the right word) while Finnish has a few prepositions like "ilman".

My next post will be about Spanish and Swedish, since those languages need more attention.

Beware, this post may contain random thoughts, and possibly incoherent complaining!!!! Read at your own risk.

I thought I could quickly learn a lot of Swedish vocabulary simply because of my knowledge of Afrikaans/Dutch; but it seems that that orthographies differ just enough to mean I have to learn a few words that appear to be entirely new at first. I've found more Swedish music which is good hopefully I can figure out what syllable is supposed to be stressed when pronouncing words, too bad there's no accent marks. Oh well I probably need to learn a little more vocabulary first anyway.

Spanish is getting interesting, I'm looking more into the conditional tense and subjunctive mood, though I do wonder why any language needs both a conditional tense and a subjunctive mood (I think it has at least 4 tenses).

Last week I also tried to learn more about Inuktitut's syllabic writing system and the Georgian alphabet, just to see if I could work out a system for learning new writing systems; but no luck yet. I can get Inuktitut and Georgian fonts to display websites correctly but I can't easily type the correct characters so writing them out by hand is probably a better idea for now.

I should be in math class right now, but I'd rather learn Swedish. I think I will learn more Swedish once I buy a Swedish-English dictionary so I can have one at home. Using online dictionaries to translate song lyrics takes way too long.

I'll type a longer message later on in the week, right now I'm hungry.

Vi ses senare

Esp: ¡Estoy frustrado! Acabo de estudiar español y no recuerdo los verbos irregulares o las ortografías de los palabras, ¡Qué dificíl!. Quiero traducir dos canciones ahora pero no tengo mi diccionario bilingüe. Escuché la música por la mañana pero no entendí nada nunca. ¡Ay de mi! No aprendo más español ahora. Traduciré este mensaje mañana, ojalá que seré menos frustrado.

Hasta la vista
Mick
