UPDATE

Movies:
1. となりのトトロ (w/o sub)
2. 魔女の宅急便 (w/norwegian sub) + (w/o sub)
3. 歩いても歩いても (w/o sub) + (w/norwegian sub) + (w/o sub)

Books:
1. ハリー・ポッターとアズカバンの囚人 (639 pg)
2. ハリー・ポッターと炎のゴブレット (1005 pg)

Writing:
1. 自己紹介
2. 大挑戦

MOVIES
歩いても歩いても(Still Walking) (w/o sub) + (w/norwegian sub) + (w/o sub)
I watched歩いても歩いても (Still Walking) 3 times. First without subs, and understood a few words: “mom,” “dad,” “good morning,” “radish, “butterfly.” However I felt I got the gist of it. Though I realized after watching it with subtitles that my «gist» was probably based entirely on what I’d read on the back of the box. After watching with subtitles, I was able to pick up a bit more when I watched without subtitles again.
The movie is about family relationships: expectations and disappointments, idealizing the dead, resentments, etc. (I’ll give a more complete review on my
blog.) Anyway, I’m not usually good at sitting through movies, so the fact that I watched this one three times in a row says a lot for the quality of the movie. And if that’s not enough, after returning it to the library the next day, I was quite disappointed that I couldn’t watch it again.

BOOKS
ハリー・ポッターと炎のゴブレット (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire). Finally finished! It took me a bit longer than expected since for about a week I was so stressed that I spent 20 minutes staring at a page before reading a paragraph or two and then staring some more. So my average reading speed has dropped considerably.

It would also be great to have your 1 month's status. Have you begun, what do you like the best, what has frustrated you the most, what is the strategy for the rest of the challenge?

I suppose I should answer this while I’m at it.

Have you begun: I think that’s obvious :)

What do you like the best: I’m not sure. I’ve been reading a lot and I’m really enjoying the occasional shock I get when I realize that I’m actually reading Japanese. But realizing that I’ve been reading for a while and completely forgotten that I was reading Japanese is even better.

What has frustrated you the most: Watching a movie and not understanding much more than “radish.” My listening skills are terrible. I know that they will get better with time, but right now it doesn’t feel like it.

What is the strategy for the rest of the challenge: Read a lot, watch a lot, write a lot :) I suppose I don’t really have so much strategy. I’m trying to keep up with the books especially. I still want to try to succeed by the old rules if I can, so I’m trying to do one “book” every six days. Movies are easier to squeeze in. So I don’t worry about falling behind on them as I can easily catch up again. I haven’t been doing much writing. I’ve mostly been working on passive skills, but I really need to start writing again, even if I can only manage a few very banal sentences at a time. I seem to be on track for both movies and books, but way behind on writing.

Update 02

German
Books:
1) Harry Potter und der Stein der Weisen
2) Harry Potter und die Kammer des Schreckens

I've not actually finished the second book, but I've read enough pages for it to count
as two books already. I'd really like to read 50 books total by the end of the
challenge (and I think that will be a lot easier in German), but if I only reach the
page count, I'll still be pleased.

Films:
1) Der König der Löwen
2) Harry Potter und der Stein der Weisen

Both without subs so far, though that may change once I start moving onto films I
haven't seen before in any language. I didn't mind watching the first film dubbed, but
Harry Potter was a little more strange because it's live action. I plan to watch each
Harry Potter film in German after I finish the relevant book.

Mandarin
Books:
--

I'm still reading the children's book I began on May 1st... it's only going to end up
counting as 5 pages and I've still not finished it -_-. Sigh. I'll get there.

Films:
1 - 10) 宮-鎖心玉

I've watched 20 episodes of this drama (on 23/35 because I started watching it before
the Super Challenge began) and I'm planning on finishing it soon - probably after the
6WC is over. Then I'll see if I can find something more contemporary - either a film or
another TV series.

Writing:
1) 超级挑战

I still only have this one piece, though I'm halfway through another (it's getting a
bit long and complicated...). I enjoy writing, but it does still take me such a long
time.

Month One: Review

Overall, I'm happy with where I am. Without this challenge, I would definitely not have
read that much German and would not have noticed the change in my reading speed (1-2
pages per minute!). It's definitely helping. Mandarin is frustrating me though,
particularly in regards to reading: sometimes I can look at a sentence and get the
gist, but most of the time I have to decipher this or that and it takes forever. Still,
I remember doing this with German (I still have to, occasionally), so I know I'll
improve. It just seems a long way off.

My strategy for the rest of the challenge? I don't know. For German, I want to finish
the Harry Potter series before I begin reading anything else; after I finish this book
hopefully I'll pick up speed, since this is my least favourite. After I finish each
book, I'll watch the corresponding film (probably split Deathly Hallows up with the
book), but I can watch other films alongside.

For Mandarin... I just have to trudge on through with the reading. I need to pick up
more basic vocabulary and characters from structures sources so that I understand how
they work - so I need to complement the challenge with lessons, probably from my
University textbook. I'm still using English subtitles for the films, so I'd like to be
able to turn those off at some point. For writing, it's just a case of looking at the
corrections I get on lang-8 so that I can put the grammar I learn into practice. I
really need to catch up with this language.

UPDATE #8
Been watching stuff on TV5 a lot, especially cartoons with my kids. Have added another film based on this, probably about 2.5 hours total.

I've also finished another book. It's only 31 pages, but I've read it 3x plus re-read the first 2 chapters, bringing it up to 103 pages.

FRENCH FILMS

1. French in Action Lessons 2-4.
2. TV5 shows (1 hour 40 mins total).
3. On choisit pas ses parents.
4. French in Action lessons 5-7.
5. Cartoons on TV5 (about 2 hours in total).
6. French in Action lessons 8-10.
7. French in Action lessons 11-13
8. French in Action lessons 14-16
9. French in Action lessons 17-19
10. État de manque.
11. Various things on TV5. Mostly cartoons.

FRENCH BOOKS

1. Assimil New French with Ease.
2. Max et Mathilde en vacances.
3. Rémi et le mystère de Saint-Péray.

HINDI FILMS

1. Dhobhi Ghat (Mumbai Diaries).
2. Coolie A classic Amitabh Bachchan film from the 80s. I think it was only really a hit because the big A nearly died during the filming of it. The film pauses and a title comes on telling you the exact moment he was punched and sent to the hospital.

HINDI BOOKS

Still nothing.

My goals for the last week of the 6WC:
-Polish: 25 films (currently 18) and 10 books (currently 8)
-Italian: 10% (currently 9% with 17 films and 57 book pages. 10% would be 20 films or 19 films and one book)

anyone else setting goals now? :)

also, really tempted to sign up with Croatian, books only. because 7 is a nicer number than 6 and because i have two films-only signups and just one books-only. but i'll wait till i know what i do for the August 6WC :)

If you've thought that listening to the poem is a piece of cake... then you've been wrong! After 3 listenings (to be fair I've counted it in challenge just as one) I've remembered only several words. Pretty pathetic for someone who speaks Bulgarian at B1 level.

I'm having some rough luck with my French movies! I started L'illusionniste last night - a beautiful and sad animated film about an ageing musician in the 1950's who's act is being overshadowed by rock and roll bands. . It's from the same director as the amazing Triplets of Belleville - and I should've known from that there would be no dialogue.

I'll finish the movie, but for myself, not for the challenge. This will be my fourth strike out in a month! There were two movies I didn't like enough to finish, and two that had minimal dialogue.

One Month Assessment:

Books: I'm approximately 172 pages into Madame Bovary, and have 200 to go. My pace is starting to pick up; I don't think it should take me a whole month to finish.

Flics: I have six logged, but Séraphine is the only one so far I can strongly recommend.

What do you like the best: The challenge is really motivating me to keep on top of my reading and movie-watching. I can let movies gather dust on my shelf for weeks before I get around to them; now I'm more likely to either watch it or return it.

What has frustrated you the most: I'd like to see more people updating here! Lists are fine, but I like to read people's thoughts, experiences, and recommendations.

What is the strategy for the rest of the challenge: I missed a couple French movies this past month at the art houses in town; I need to pay more attention to their schedules! I have two marked for the coming month: La tête en friche(My Afternoons With Margueritte; I have high hopes for this one) and Le hérisson (The Elegance of the Hedgehog, which is also on my reading list).

For the books I'm torn between staying with the classics, which are harder to read but available in parallel text, or moving on to the Harry Potter series. My eventual goal is to be able to read modern literature, but I want a much, much stronger grasp of the language first.

LANGUAGE: German, Spanish, Swedish

CHALLENGE: 3 x Half Challenge (50 books, 50 movies in each language!)

CURRENT LEVEL: Just starting! I'm about a C1 in German, B1-2 in Spanish and complete beginner in Swedish

COMMENTS: I'm hoping this challenge will help me learn more about the cinema and literature of the three
languages I am interested in, as well as polishing my German and Spanish skills and giving me a jump-start learning
Swedish! I will be posting about my progress in detail in my blog:
