And I've thought that hardly anyone writes in this thread... it must have been the mechanism of repression.
I have to do something with that, in other case I'll end up with the honorific least number!

(wow I was first and last post on the previous page)

Japanese Books

1. HunterxHunter treasures vol.1 manga 788 pages=157 pages
2. HunterxHunter treasures vol.2 manga 520 pages=104 pages

Japanese Movies

1. となりのトトロ
2.魔法の宅急便
3.崖の上のポニョ

French Books

1. Easy French Reader 100 pages
2. Harry Potter à L'école des Sorciers 305 pages

French Movies

1. Le Roi Lion
2. Mon Voisin Totoro
3. Les Chroniques de Narnia : L'Armoire Magique
4. Ponyo sur la Falaise

One thing I'm noticing with the movies I watch in Japanese and French is that even though my French is far worse than my Japanese I pick up on things I missed the first time through. I don't know if that's just because it's the second time or because, as and English speaker, French is far more transparent to me than Japanese.

French Writings

1. Présenter Moi-Même(58 words)

With all my reading recently I've started to talk to myself a little in French, so I felt confident enough and I got off work early so I had enough energy to write my first piece of writing. I decided to start with a self introduction because it's easy and I didn't know what else to write about. I can't get to 200 words yet, but for now I'll write short bits that will start to add up and eventually I'm sure I'll be writing 500 words or more at a time. I tried some difficult sentence constructions so hopefully I'll get lots of corrections. My verbs are a complete mess, as is my spelling, so I know what I have to work on during my study time.

****

After 5 light comedies something different...

20h17 Rue Darling
Gérard (Luc Picard), an alcoholic out of work journalist leaves his apartment briefly to help one of his ex-wives and with
some plumbing and upon returning finds his entire building gone in what is believed to be a natural gas explosion. He
becomes obsessed with researching the lives of his six dead neighbors, wondering why he survived and not them and
reflecting on his own life.

and if thats not dark enough...

Polytechnique
A true story based on the events of Dec 6 1989 at École Polytechnique de Montréal when an unstable misogynist who
blamed his unhappiness on feminists entered a class at the engineering school with a Ruger mini-14 rifle, demanded that
all male students leave the class and then shot all the females. The director chose to film in black and white to minimize
the impact of blood and he wanted to release the DVD with both English and French versions simultaneously for all of
Canada by using fully bilingual actors instead of dubbing. The events are seen first from the perspective of one of the male
students who left the class and ends up committing suicide out of guilt for not having stayed. The film then rewinds to
show the events as seen by a female student who was in the class but survived. The massacre (14 women) lead to the
formation of the "Long gun registry" in Canada which was just dismantled this year as a campaign promise by the current
government. Québec is now suing the federal government to retain the data.

I have also added a Half (films only) Challenge for Turkish as an excuse to go back to watching Turkish dramas without the guilt. It's like giving yourself permission to eat chocolate without feeling guilty about it! (Well, that, and Turkish has been on my hit list for a long time, and I was surprised how much I was learning when I was watching them.) I will probably add Turkish to my structured study next year. Right now, I am focusing on finishing the four Assimil courses I'm working on by the end of the summer.

I also added a Half Challenge for Russian. (Which I can blame on Cristina, maydayayday, Serpent, and AnyaPop. They have a mental hospital, and they invited me. And who am I to turn down a good language nerd party?) For me, it was a commitment to Russian being one of my next focus languages. I ordered the English-based Assimil Russian course last week, and I'm expecting it to arrive this week.

I started counting my Assimil writings as only half a writing for the Challenges. I copy the dialog and both of the exercises. Some of them are closer to 200 words, others are not. Either way, I will stop counting "copying" once I get to 50 (half the goal) for the writing part of the challenge. Since I'm closer to a beginner for Italian and German (and with the complexities of French orthography), I think this corresponds nicely with my goals for all three languages. Counting them as half will bring me to about 50 writings for each language by the end of the course, so it works out nicely.

The Spanish writing with Assimil is a different story. Most of those dialogs are a lot longer than 200 words. In fact, I have thought about not copying them because they are so long. (Each lesson takes 2-3 pages in my spiral notebook to copy.) But I know I learn better by doing that, so I will continue as long as my hand doesn't fall off!

I'm really frustrated with my listening comprehension in Spanish. I can read Spanish with very little problem, but unless someone is talking slowly or I have the text in front of me, my brain can't keep up with what I hear. I watched Toy Story the other night. I started watching with only Spanish audio, and I was missing too much. As soon as I put the Spanish subs on though, I was fine. Any suggestions for dealing with this?

For anyone in the US, check out Schoenhofs for Assimil and other target language books. I just got three Assimil books (no audio) for $50 with free shipping. Assimil Russian, Perfeccionnement Italien, and Hungarian with Ease. I only got the Hungarian book because it bumped my order over $50 and gave me free shipping. :D

I'm posting an update mostly to let others know I'm still participating. It's been a slow 2 weeks, but I did get
some done. Summer activities with my little girl take a bite out of my language time.

Libros: (5.4/50)
1. La Casa en Mango St. (112)
2. No Bajes al Sotano (121)
3. La Piramide Roja (still reading, 309 pages)

I did listen to some podcasts, but won't post them until I have a whole unit. Guess if you look at it like I've
completed 10% of the reading, that's not so bad. I must say, reading a children's book is hard for me. Of course
there's the vocabulary, but I'm learning that. Still look up lots of words & write them down. It's more a lack of
enthusiasm for the content, even though it's a challenging enough level. Feel like I have to move on to more
relevant content for myself for the next book, even if the language is more difficult.
