I've realized that I need to work more on my French before I can watch
movies comfortably. If I watch with English subs, I find myself not even listening to
the French. .... Maybe I will try French audio and French subs with a movie I'm
familiar with, and see how that goes, since my reading is far stronger than my
listening comprehension. |

I feel the same way, although it depends on the level
of street-talk in the movie. I can't follow crime movies or indie dramas at all, but
comedies seem to be a lot easier. I can 'hear' the French even though I'm reading the
English - it's almost like using Assimil.
But it's been frustrating finding French movies with French subtitles; most only have
English. I've only found a few so far, and would love to hear what others have found.
French movies with French subtitles:
Camille Claudel (Bruno Nuytten, 1988) - I just started this. Camille was a
student of Rodin's. So far I really enjoy it.
La cage aux folles (Edouard Molinaro, 1978) - Drag queens in the south of
France. The leads actors are great; the supporting actors are dull.
La grande séduction (Jean-François Pouliot, 2003) - Cute indie comedy from
Quebec.
Comedies with easier-to-follow French:
Le dîner de cons (Francis Veber, 1998)
8 femmes (François Ozon, 2002) - A surreal candy-colored murder-mystery musical.
I loved it, but not everyone will.

I share listening comprehension frustrations with many of you. While I can understand many podcasts &
intermediate level Veinte Mundos presentations pretty easily, some dialogues in movies kill me. I watched "Y tu
mama tambien" this week ... the language the boys used, lots of cursing, mostly passed over my head. When
the narrator spoke, I understood so much better.
This movie has been available for several years, but I never rented it. I was pretty put off by what seemed to be
its premise, mainly that of an older woman initiating teenage boys sexually. It seemed to have gotten good
reviews, but I wasn't convinced. Well, having watched it, I'm still not convinced! I even stopped watching to look
up exactly what good things critics had to say about the film before finishing it. Still think it's based more on
male fantasy, even if it does reflect on differences between the rich and poor of Mexico.
Haven't gotten much reading done ... mostly stuff in People en Espanol, which I don't officially count!
So my update is:
Peliculas: 6/50
5. Y tu mama tambien
6. Veinte Mundos & podcasts from Notes in Spanish (94 min)

Is anyone else informally doing a 100+50 challenge? I've already reached 40 Polish "movies" and I still have a great Sapkowski audiobook and some other resources I'd love to use. However, I'm definitely not going to read more than 50 books.
@surrealix would it be possible to keep track of what I continue to listen without it counting?

I was watching Disney's Peter Pan last night (in Italian), and had the same problem. Not swear words as much as pirate talk. I was really glad I had subtitles, or I would have been completely lost for most of the movie! Now I have to watch something else to boost my poor, battered self-esteem. :-)
