I'm actually pretty excited about this. I just checked next ups website to see if they added any new
japanese voices to their arsenal and they did. And it was the awesome aceppela one that I had wanted a
while back but couldn't find for sale for personal use. It's called Sakura and she sounds excellent for a
computer. I used to use computer text to speech to read a lot of books in other languages a while back.
It's good because the computer just keep marching on at a set pace whereas reading on my own I often
go slow and get hung up on small stuff. Especially when I'm new to a language. I was listening to chapter
one of potter. It sounds good. It doesn't pronounce the kanji perfectly every time. I was a little surprised
that it pronounced kaiyoubi as kaiyoubi. But it seems accurate most of the time. I'm very happy right now
and Ithink this will kick start reading. I'm using TextAloud 3 with the voice and it can read I Firefox so I can
use rikai sama with it and read along etc. In TextAloud though I can't. It's so frustrating.. I wish rikai were a
universal app that I could use everywhere. I do have lingoes though and has a pretty good dictionary so I
can get by.

*edit*
Oops I can't spell. And the phone thought it was correcting a typo so what I wrote didn't even make sense. Anyway, the text to speech engine pronounced 火曜日 as かようひ.

Finally getting into subs2srs.. I knew it would be a pain to get to work and it is.. but I'm getting there. It would be simple if the anime came with the subs file in Japanese synched to the video but I'm not so lucky. Anyway, I used the timing tool to fix it I think. It seems ok.. I still haven't taken that step to put it into my SRS program yet and I have to go run an errand.. but I'm watching Devil Survivor 2 with Japanese subs atm using VLC player.. awesome. Of course it didn't work right the first time. I had to change the font in VLC to MS gothic or some such thing.. ariel displayed boxes.. and then when I changed it it still wasn't working.. until I closed and reopened VLC. Problem with this stuff and all the trial and error is that you don't know what the issue is or how long it will take for you to figure it out..

Anyway. Gonna go wash the car and come back and finish this deck. I was annoyed that some of the subs didn't match up English to Japanese very well because in one language it might show 2 sentences at once but separate it in the other language. I didn't see how to combine the two on subs2srs. But the program really is a god send regardless. While it's been a bit of a pain to setup, when I think about it, just studying one episode will probably be enough study time and I'll get enough out of it that it's more than worth it. And obviously the next show I do will be far easier to setup.

Arizona State Japanese Speech contest tomorrow. I'm not doing it - just going to support the one classmate of mine who was lucky enough to be able to participate. But it should be fun regardless. They only let one student from our whole class compete. Rather stingy of them I think.

I just avoid using English subtitles completely in subs2srs. Be warned though: You
might have to delete about 90 % of the cards you import, since they (1) are not proper
sentences or (2) contain only words that you know.

Subs2srs is just as much work as other means of grabbing sentences from native media.

Also: spend less time obsessing over finding the "perfect" study methods. The time
spent on Japanese is much more important.

I'd like to have the English on there to help give context even if the translation isn't literal. If ignoring the English would make it easier than I'll do it though. I plan on using rikai to add vocab definitions for the Japanese anyway. The concern is that the audio won't match up well with the Japanese subs. I used a utility to extract the English subs from the mkv... then used the sub2srs timing feature to try to fix the audio to match the japanese subs. For some reason that I can't figure out, Just getting the proper start position didn't fix it. I had to literally go through the whole thing and redo the timing or it got really off from the original.. or so it seemed.. haven't fully tested yet.

I do NOT want to throw out 90% of the cards I make lol.

Not sure who else uses android and has been waiting but I read that
swiftkey is finally working on a japanese language pack. I'm excited
about this.. I'd say swiftkey makes android a better choice for me
than ios in itself. Wish I knew when they planned on finishing it. I
can't stand using my other input program with japanese support.. I
make too many little typos that it can't fix itself.

成功だ。I just finished making the subs2srs deck for devil survivor 2
episode 2. I haven't gone through every single card yet but it looks
solid. I was annoyed at the learning curve but all well that ends well. I
think I'll benefit from almost every card too. A few don't have any new
vocab but even so, seeing vocab I know in context is helpful. I'll just
hit the correct option every time they cone up and they won't repeat
much. I did use the setting to only make cards that have actual kanji
in them so that filtered out some useless cards. I was listening to
one card.. It had a word that I really just couldn't hear the 2nd
syllable no matter how much I listened to the audio. Which is
discouraging. I suppose when your vocabulary gets good your brain
will fill in gaps that your ear doesn't pickup and this is a new word
(can't recall it atm) but still... One thing about German I liked was
that I found the word boundaries were pretty easy and the sounds
distinct. A lot like English. It is Germanic so I guess that makes
sense. And i listened to German audio for years and years. It's too
early to get to frustrated I suppose with japanese. I'm just now
starting to approach anime with an expectation of being able to
understand. I think I've gotten enough basic grammar behind me
now (finally lol).

I was lucky to find quite exact subs for death note, but you could try finding the
proper starting point, and then adding a bit of pad timing to conpensate for the
inaccuracy.

Do the subs sync up well with the video in VLC?

Yeah it seems to. Some if them go by kinda fast buy that probably
just because they're talking fast. Yeah I think if I find the right starting
point it should line up.. I dunno.. It was a little strange but still it
seems good, just have to spend some time with the timing utility.
And the English subs matched well on the cards too. Only a couple
seemed like they were wrong for whatever reason.
