@Kraemder: Found my way here after a reference you made in another log, to Leitner.
I've looked at the Wikipedia entry so I know that much, but are you using physical cards or paper, or are you using a software implementation? (I use paper word-lists at the moment and am happy with them, but I like to keep my options open). In an off-topic reference to the Apple thing mentioned above, in my early working life, I worked on IBM and IBM compatible mainframes, and in those days it was usually IBM who was "the bad guy"....antitrust suits, you name it. They seemed unstoppable then. Look at them now. Well, they are still there of course, but no longer quite masters of the universe. No. Apple was suing Samsung over the physical design of Samsung's devices being too similar to Apple products primarily. It shouldn't affect consumers in that way since the devices are already sold (and certainly doesn't make it illegal for you to have bought one, though I suppose if they get really ridiculous they could theoretically demand redesigned versions and issue a recall?), Apple's making Samsung pay damages for intellectual property theft, basically. Android as a platform is not related to the case at all, though. It's definitely not actually outlawing other companies from competing, though it's going to put some pressure on designers not to follow Apple's design innovations which ... may result in some really stupidly designed phones and tablets over the next year or so. I'm not real happy with the outcome, but saying Apple's outlawing all competition is kinda overly dramatic. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

I guess it is overly dramatic but I was really disappointed. Rectangle and round edges are taken by apple?

I'm gonna try that since I'm not allowed to have any electronic devices on my desk at work and it's really slow at before 8 am usually. I'm using a flashcard app for iOS called Flashcards Deluxe. It specializes in spaced repetition but has a "leitner" mode that basically shuffles the cards and gives you a group of cards in sets of 10 or what you specify. The round may have 50 cards or whatever depending on the size of the deck. If you get the card right twice ou won't see it again for two more rounds. 3 times in a row you won't see it for 3 rounds etc. You can keep going doing lots of rounds in one day or whatever. I love the app also because it handles sound and will make awesome text to speech for you in several languages. And you can set it to auto play the word list for driving in our car or doing chores or whatever if you want. I'm not sure what other options there are for ios or android that are similar but might be better. I haven't shopped around since I'm happy with this and have a lot decks in it already. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

The teacher I have at my local community college has a good reputation. You can see a large difference
between those if us who had him before and those who didn't. He says it's due to the different textbooks that used to be used but I think it's just that the other teachers aren't anywhere as good. I hope they stick to it and don't drop some of them seem discouraged. Were doing a review of the previous semesters. We did a kanji review and I'm shocked at how bad some people did. Again, in general it was the students who didn't have him that didn't do so well. RTK has helped my kanji so much that it was a joke to me. I wish the same could be said about the other parts of the class. I'm doing well but I'm not that good heh. RTK is really awesome. I'm so glad I use it. I'm gonna try making vocab with lists on paper. This was how I did most of my German. I didn't have fancy computer tools then and iPads or iPods and it was just easier and cheaper than flashcards although I did try those a little. I'm doing this partly so I have something to use at work where I'm not allowed to have my iPad or ipod out even when it's slow but also because I think that studying different ways helps it sink in better. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

I met with one of the tutors for the first time last week. We spoke all in japanese for a while. It wasn't too
bad. You could tell he was grading his language for me but still it was a real conversation and it didn't give me a headache. I couldn't do that last semester (well maybe if pushed but it would have definitely given me a headache and would have been more halting). So all the anime watching over the summer paid off XD. I found it interesting that I used a word that he didn't know in English. 通勤 or commuting. It's on my n3 list I'm trying to cram. I really struggled to produce it. But since I did that effort it's prett mine to use whenever now. I plan on speaking as much Japanese as possible with the tutors this semester and making myself use the new vocab I study. I really can't use it's in class unfortunately. The professor wants to keep material in class limited to what we're studying. This makes sense when you see how much trouble some of the students are having keeping up. But still it was a little frustrating the way he reacted when I used a word 故郷 and at first he pretended not to understand me. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

If you're getting the opportunity to speak with people one to one now, I think your speaking will take off in no time. Now my class is over, I really miss having regular conversations with people offline.
It's tough that your professor is so strict on vocabulary and one of the real drawbacks from class learning. If he is strict on you using a wider vocabulary, it sucks for you. But if he lets you use lots of words most of your classmates won't understand, it sucks for them. When I went to class, my teacher wasn't strict about that kind of thing, but it seemed a bit pointless to use words the other students probably wouldn't understand. Also, if I made any mistakes it would waste everyone else's time if I were to get corrections on things that nobody else had learned to use yet. Anyway, doing the class still really helped me to firm up basic and essential grammar. I've definitely improved somehow on this time last year and I'm really sad that there aren't any more advanced classes here. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

Yeah it's mostly vocabulary that I would use in he class... Well that and some grammar in the later chapters
which again he probably won't want me to use until we're getting close to it... And definitely not for next semester's grammar. I'm going to get a lot from the class regardless though since I never have the opportunity to really practice grammar ever. I can chat with the tutors but I don't think they'll correct me unless it's so bad that they don't understand me. But you're right... Talking one on one with someone was really good.
