I might order some manga from Japan. I have an app on my iPad for reading manga but most of the stuff is English translations. I wouldn't mind just reading the smaller selection of Japanese except that I really want to read this particular manga Hikaru No Go. That's the series I stumbled on last weekend and failed to study as a result. I loved it heh. I even ordered it on DVD so I could rewatch it without ads (I had to watch it on hulu) and this way I can turn the subs off too if I want. I think. I ordered the DVD from playtechasia. Frankly it was so much cheaper than anything else online I wonder if they're legal and if not I wonder what they're selling me.
Not sure if anyone reading this is an avid iPad user. Their recent iOs 5 update makes the iBooks dictionary universal. About time. However, the only languages I can get it to work with are English and Japanese. When it worked in Japanese I figured it would work for any major language. But not so. I tried it for French, German, and Spanish without any success and searching Google there's no detailed info on the feature and in fact per other users it only supports English. But it definitely does Japanese on mine. It doesn't seem to intelligently determine word boundaries though like rikaichan does but otherwise it's a great English/Japanese dictionary. Since there's no support for other western European languages, frankly I'm astonished to find it included. Per what I read online, as of now app developers can't access it to allow you to use purchased dictionaries in the app store in its place. That would make the iPad far more useful as a study tool if they could and you have to wonder why they can't and further why they haven't been able to since day 1. Frustrating. I was reading a Spanish ebook on the kindle app when I was trying to get the new iOs5 dictionary to lookup Spanish for me and found out the Kindle app includes a very nice Spanish to Spanish dictionary. I don't know how long they've had that but it's great. And my intermediate Spanish is good enough to make use of it too so I plan to read some Spanish on my iPad now. Spanish. A little over a year ago I had decided to improve my Spanish for work and even worked with a private tutor (not too expensive) that I found through craig's list. I was an avid Warcraft gamer at the time and consequently not such a good student as I had hoped. However, my tutor told me she was very impressed at my progress and my vocabulary. She was right too. I've noticed that my Spanish just seems to get better as time goes on without even any formal study - just reading something online once a week (w/pop up dictionary) and watching minimal TV. I found online manga in Japanese and it downloads nicely to my iPad. I literally just grabbed it a few moments ago and I'm glancing at hikaru no go. Every character has furigana (nice!). Every furigana character is so small though =/. I'm on the 1st page and i can't make out this one furigana to save my life. Argh. Anyway, I just read this whole series last night in English and I'm a little bored of it so I am gonna try something else.

Ive pretty much ignored Spanish, German and French since taking on Japanese. I think I'm gonna make
some time for Spanish though. I miss being able to actually talk and read and stuff. I'm watching pan's labrynth and I turned off the subs because I don't need them. It's really nice. I don't understand every word but I do understand enough. I really miss that. I am gonna go ahead and study Spanish vocab some along with Japanese. I didn't before for fear of slowing down the Japanese and I was really impatient to get Japanese to an intermediate level but it's slow and that's not going to change. And as I've said I my Spanish gets better without my even trying anyway. It really would have a use on the job. It's pretty much the only language where customers call in and actually ask me if I speak their language. Granted outside of work there isn't Spanish anime or really very many movies or stuff to read but still it's nice on the job. Anyway so I might post some stuff about Spanish here too although the focus remains Japanese. Regarding Japanese I took someone's earlier advice and I'm reading the stuff on the Internet. I didn't before because well I didn't do it that way with other languages. But the material is easier than a book and the pop up dictionary likes it tons better. I still use an add on for the furigana so I'm never 100% sure it's correct but I think it is 95% of the time. It's kind of exciting too. I am hoping my progress goes forward as a result. I am a little frustrated that the furigana on the manga I was racing turned out tho be unreadable some of the time. The furigana was what I had planned to use to look stuff up in a dictionary so with maybe 25% being unreadable it's a bit frustrating. I amrobably gonna come back to it but I love having a pop up dictionary that tells me the meaning of a word and it's always right. No guessing or very little guessing. Sometimes, it feels like Japanese is a full-time job. But the pay is... well do "good-feelings' count as pay :)?
Great movie (of course, I had to have subs because I speak virtually no Spanish).
Is it unreadable because it is so small? That's one of the fears I have about reading Japanese, especially kanji. Some of the characters are so stroke-intensive that I worry they'll end up looking like little black blocks. If you look at the font-size on the "last edited" line of your post, can you imagine trying to read a sentence in kanji of that size? Is it even possible? Yeah Pan's Labrinth is really good. But partway in I stopped watching. Because its not Japanese heh. So
goes my obsession with learning this language. Regarding the furigana, it was nothing more than a couple black dots. It was a scanned image so I could zoom in and make a bigger black dot but oh well. The kanji itself wasn't too bad except that I stink at kanji and need that furigana. Some of the furigana was readable,it all depended on the size of the kanji it was attaching itself to. I think the original published text would be just as unreadable since comic books use cheap printing but I'm not positive. I would really like to use the manga to learn :/. I'm probably going to give it another shot. As it stands the most enjoyable "studying" is watching anime. I can do that all day heh. I asked my jap tutor if people in Japan carry pocket magnifying glasses to read kanji etc. he said they don't need it even if they can't see every stroke (and you can't always) because they still recognize the general shape of the kanji and along with the context it's not a problem for them. I can't help thinking why do they make reading and writing so hard??? Oh well. It would be cool if there were an option for Japanese subs on movies. Obviously English has it for almost everything and even Spanish does sometimes. I have yet to see it for Japanese though. Thanks to redundancy and the magic of the human mind, once you get more familiar with kanji you will find it easier to read smaller characters. I think with manga the readability of furigana is really variable depending on the quality and size of the print etc. I still go with my recommendation for よつばと - the text is about as clear as you will get. If something is not readable for you right now, don't worry about it. Just drop it and try something else. You can go back to the squidgy small furigana later when you are a kanji master!
I agree with the subs for movies thing. I think that due to region locking and things, the assumption is made that any Japanese movie released in Europe or the US is not going to appeal to a Japanese-reading market who may wish to have subs, so in most cases you are stuck with the option of either importing from Japan, breaking the law, or doing without. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||||||||

They have subs if you import from Japan? I'd be willing to pay for a movie or 2 to see how I like it.. I imagine
it's a lot of kanji though... Still I'm curious. What's a time frame for the magic of my mind to read kanji? 3 years of exposure? 1 person has voted this message useful | |||||||||

Several months of structured study should do it. I'm not sure how you will fare going with exposure alone as I have no experience of this. I can say for certain that after studying around 3-400 characters and associated vocabulary, kanji no longer felt intimidating. It quickly got replaced by vocabulary as the bane of my study however!
With respect to subs you can check the listing on sites like amazon to make sure there are subs. There definitely were on the copy of the Nodame Cantabile movie I bought and yes, there is lots of kanji! 1 person has voted this message useful |
