I do have a sentence deck but I do find the vocabulary decks useful too. It seems to help me to have "primed" my brain to know a given word so that when I do hit it in the wild it solidifies more easily.
I've not yet found a good way to learn grammar (other than repetition and drilling). I did start to make cards but I think I was putting too much information on them, so the whole process was too time consuming and I stopped doing it. I still think I probably need most of that information but perhaps split over several cards. My worry is that I'll spend more time optimising the method than I will actually studying :-)
I thought I'd really like to use rikaichan/sama/kun/whichever to just do the kanji->kana translation for me (i.e. a sort of on-demand furigana) as otherwise I get lazy and let the cursor drift along the text and kid myself that I'm "reading". I found that the "D" key does pretty much what I want. Sadly I also found that reading is much harder than "reading" :-(
I found the master index (from the back of the DOAJG book) and printed it out ages ago. When I come across a grammar point to learn I start by reading the explanation in 新完全マスター and then look it up elsewhere (e.g. in the DO*JG book if I can find it or みんなの日本語中級 or wherever). I've yet to find an N2 grammar point in the Basic dictionary and a good few are in the Intermediate dictionary but a whole bunch of them are in the Advanced dictionary. So that's quite a lot to cover (and presumably quite a bit left uncovered). renshuu has so far filled in most of the gaps, sometimes with the help of JGram, but the explanations vary from excellent to very bare-bones. If I could get DO*JG at a reasonable price I think I'd go for it. Hmm. A quick look on Amazon and ebay suggests that DOIJG is now ~£40 and DOAJG can be had for ~£50. The last time I looked the cheapest offers for each of these was ~£100 (and there are still sellers asking that much for each of them). 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||||||||

Well I just discovered Evita's grammar deck for Korean. It's fantastic. I am digging the grammar since it
seems to introduce stuff gradually instead of a lot at once and I'm used to using lots of flashcards so a flashcard deck works well for me. I'm slightly concerned about it being recognition. But that might even be better. I have no idea. I also got my new iPhone 6 Plus. I love this device. It better not bend. It's expensive as hell. I'm probably not going to upgrade my phone next year or maybe even the next. The phone is perfect. Unless it bends. I'm into an anime that came out over the summer called Tokyo Ghoul. It's not on Crunchyroll so I missed it. Watching it without subs. I've started doing that again recently and will probably continue until after the N2. I found I liked the new fate / zero episode better without subs even though I definitely understood better with subs. It's a nice deck, right? My goal was to introduce grammar as painlessly as possible, that's why there are several (or more) cards to consolidate each grammar point. Of course, it all depends on what sentences I could find that would also have an audio. Sometimes when I couldn't find something I wanted, I simply added the sentence without an audio. I think this deck should work pretty well in the passive mode and even better if you repeat aloud the sentences you hear. But if you really wanted to, you could of course flip it around and make it an active deck. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||||||||

I'll try it as a passive deck for a while and go from there. Unfortunately, I can't figure out a good balance between passive and active flashcard studying. It's an ongoing dilemma for me =/.

I posted a general request to the koohii forums and actually got a reply (not immediately but still.. I'm impressed). I wanted a tool to get images of google for me automatically using a list of vocab. The amount of time this will save me is pretty huge. Apparently you can just write a script and windows will do this. It's very a very small script too.
tool to automatically generate pics from vocab list? Those forums are amazing. And I'm impressed at how tech savy many people studying Japanese are. I would think they'd be too busy studying computers to worry about Japanese but they seem to make time or something. 1 person has voted this message useful |
