I bought a Mac. My old PC was so loud for a couple years I literally had it on in the closet outside off of the
balcony. I thought all PC's were that loud and I spent a few hundred dollars on really long cords so it would
reach out there and the peace and quiet that resulted seemed genius. But the hot summers in Arizona took
their toll and I had it back inside. I think I've had it 6 or 7 years which is pretty long for a computer anyway.

I got the 1000 dollar Mac Mini. It's super quiet in terms of sound, I can't tell when it's on or off. It's silent.
I've only had it one day and the biggest challenge to start was getting e-mail to work. I just learned how to
install a program you download from the internet too. You don't double click it like in Windows. You drag it
from left to right or some such thing. There's a big arrow to make this intuitive but I stupidly just double
clicked it anyway and it wasn't until I went on Google that I figured dragging it really was the right thing to
do. It's not that it didn't occur to me it just didn't feel right. And if you double click it, it will start the
program, so you think you're good, but you're not. It's not installed. It's confusing.

I just installed Rikai-sama and it more or less works. I can save audio to a folder and a vocabulary list. It's
not playing the audio though if I hit F when I highlighting a word. Not a deal breaker but if anyone knows
how to fix that I'd appreciate it. I haven't installed Dropbox yet.. basically I want to see if I can make fancy
Japanese vocabulary cards on this computer like I was doing in Windows. Unfortunately, the text to speech
program I used in Windows doesn't have a Mac version. Sad but it's gone. I used to use that program a lot
but for the past few years I just used it for making sound for flashcards on my iPad/iPhone. Flashcards
Deluxe does support TTS but the quality of the voices isn't as good as the ones I bought for TextAloud
MP3. Most audio I use is native audio from Rikai-sama though.

There's a built in dictionary in Mac OS so if I'm using Safari I can double click a word in Japanese and get
definitions in English/Japanese. Pretty nice but Rikai-sama is definitely better. I'm not too into video games
anymore so I don't think I'll miss out on those at all. I'm trying to get into Japanese games my Nintendo DS
but I don't seem to have the time to get into them. I haven't looked into torrenting on Mac but I'm pretty
sure you can... (that's a pretty big resource for stuff to watch for me.. but not a req).

Still a work in progress but overall I'm just really happy with how silent and small this computer is. It looks a
lot like an Apple TV box.

I'm up in Boston now having just arrived last night. It's so different that the jlpt test is literally offered just a
couple of stops up on the orange line. It's like 15 minutes away. Tucson is such the middle of nowhere. I
miss Boston.

I'd completely forgotten that tomorrow is the first Sunday in December.

All the very best for JLPT N2!

Don't forget to stock up on the N1 textbooks while you're in a big city !

Well this is the first time I've showed up for the test expecting not to pass. The other two times I figured I had
a good shot at passing but not so much this time. I was talking to some college kids before registering and
they've studied IN Japan but they're going for N4 only which surprised me. I think they'll pass although they're
nervous. My dad was pretty disappointed when I informed him I don't expect to pass but I figure I should tell
him sooner than later.. Oh Well. After this I'll switch to all Korean until the course is done and then I'm thinking
I'll go back to Japanese again.

I've never really known how the JLPT tests went even after the event. I've certainly
thought I might have scraped a pass but with most exams a school I felt I knew
how it had gone. I guess by February you'll actually know.

These exams don't mean anything for your career or anything do they? They're just for
your personal satisfaction aren't they? My parents certainly weren't worried whether I
passed or failed. Actually, my Mom more or less said, "That's nice. So you'll stop
studying now?" :-)

TOPIK seems to have 6 levels and includes a written test, in case you need another
challenge!

Well they probably don't mean anything unless I go teach English in Japan and then they would be very
helpful on the resume. I didn't pass but I didn't feel like the material was really above me which is frustrating
since more studying and I would have made it. But I was expecting this.

They need an add on that days are you sure you want to navigate away from this page and lose the text you
just entered? I pressed the wrong button by mistake on this phone.

I think I'll write out again when I have a proper keyboard.
