I've been doing some (more) thinking about what my next move with Dutch should be.
Basically, I want to sound more natural. The only way to do that, though, is by using the language naturally, and right now I haven't created opportunities for myself to do that. In tarvos's log, he writes about making friends on Vkontakte and developing his Russian that way. I need to find something like that that makes learning Dutch logical - the spoonful of sugar that makes the medicine go down, so to speak. Now, I don't typically just go out and make friends with strangers, buuut I do read a lot of news-aggregator-ish sites. And I browse a lot of forums that attract the early- 20s crowd and discuss all sorts of topics (science, history, love, advice). So I can at least start by replacing some of this with equivalent Dutch-language sites. Right now I have two active ones in my bookmarks: Girlscene Fok.nl (...And also, bizarrely, Alles Amerika, "het grootste en gezelligste forum over de Verenigde Staten van Amerika". I won't be reading that one but you can find it here.) I will commit to browsing a Dutch-language forum or blog of some kind for at least ten minutes every day this week, just to test the waters. And if anyone has read all of this and has any recommendations for Dutch-language forums/blogs/news sites that cater to young adults, I would appreciate it. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Ik heb een paar nieuwe websites gevonden. Ze zijn in het algemeen bedoeld voor vrouwen
maar zijn nog steeds de moeite waard, denk ik: Ze Vrouwen Ja, dus heel duidelijk bedoeld voor mensen van het vrouwelijke soort, maar ja. Ik beloofde dat ik er tien minuten per dag mee zou besteden, en ja, dat heb ik wel gedaan. Dit is heel anders voor mij joh, heel apart. Ik heb namelijk tot nu toe alleen maar boeken en artikelen gelezen waarin alles redelijk formeel is. Bonita Avenue was misschien het minst formeel en dat was toch ook een roman. Deze websites schrijven op een manier die héél informeel is, meer als een twintiger (en dat ben ik ook). Het grappige is dat ze nu een beetje moeilijker te lezen zijn voor mij omdat ik er niet aan gewend ben, maar dat is even wennen. Ik heb ook een paar nieuwe liedjes ontvangt door de vriendelijkheid van mijn lieve vriend, twee gezongen door Jaap Fischer en één van Herman van Veen, de cabaretier. Die vond ik heerlijk, nu lust ik alleen maar liedjes uit de jaren 60 (en liedjes die erop lijken). Also, for all y'all fellow Dutch students - I've been really loving bab.la lately. It's a fabulous compendium of short sample sentences as well as a dictionary. When you run across those colloquialisms that Mijn Woordenboek just doesn't carry, I swear, bab.la has it every time. Ja, dat heb ik gehoord! Wauw. Wat denk je ervan? Terzijde, Wimlex is een heerlijke naam voor een Transformer, denk ik. I continue to read the online literature of the youth. Articles like "7 tekenen dat hij geen relatie met je wil" (yes, a real article that I have read today in my real life) are actually surprisingly helpful for vocabulary associated with people and interacting and such. More good news is that I can definitely read this kind of contemporary young adult stuff without breaking a sweat. It's not as fast as I read in English, but it's still enough to be enjoyable. And pretty much everything is faster than slogging through archibald strohalm, so that's a nice change too, reading-wise. Right now I'm just letting the language wash over me. This is mostly because I have other commitments that are giving me wrinkles. But it is also nice. I still distinctly remember how back in the summer of last year, every third sentence seemed like an endless string of modal particles sparsely garnished with unhelpful conjunctions. Now I find myself nodding along, and a lot of new expressions just click. Yay! I should probably spend more time on noticing phrasal verbs though. I definitely get distracted by flashier stuff, like, realizing that "tot op de dag van vandaag" is how you say "to this very day" in Dutch. In the interest of continuity, I will say that I have been reading for the specified
minimum time every day. More than that is not really happening right now because busy. I obviously need better goals if I am to progress, but honestly I'm just glad I'm keeping in touch with the language right now. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Niet heel veel, persoonlijk. Ik heb vrij weinig met de koningin (en de koning), en ik zou er prijs op stellen als de rol nog wat ceremoniëler wordt (zoals in de Scandinavische landen), maar praktisch doet de koning(in) zo weinig politiek gezien dat het allemaal geen biet uitmaakt. Belangrijkste is dat ze imago uitstralen, en dat kunnen de nieuwe koning en Maxima wel. En we hebben dan ook geen Koninginnedag meer volgend jaar, maar Koningsdag (en die is op 27 april). Dit omdat Koninginnedag traditioneel altijd gevierd wordt op de verjaardag van de koningin (of koning als we die hebben). Toen Koninginnedag is ingevoerd (dat was onder Wilhelmina geloof ik?) was het in augustus. De reden dat het niet mee is veranderd toen Beatrix koningin werd is omdat Beatrix op 31 januari jarig is, en Konininginnedag is traditioneel iets wat buiten gevierd wordt, op 31 januari in Nederland is dat geen strak plan. Dus toen is Beatrix lief geweest en heeft ze de verjaardag van Juliana aangehouden (daarom is het zolang ik me kan herinneren 30 april geweest). Maar 27 of 30 april is wat dat betreft geen verschil, dus nu veranderen we weer. Wat houden ze toch goed rekening met ons op Paleis Huis ten Bosch, he? :) 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Hoi, Hekje.
I'm officially learning Dutch :). It resembles German quite a lot. Actually, I listened to simple lessons which are designed to teach simple sentences, mostly touristic, and I could understand them by means of my smattering of German. I was told Dutch courses in the Netherlands are very expensive. I wish I could find a good one, but if not, I'll learn it by my own. Someone told me the Delfse Methote is a great starting point. I don't know whether you know that particular one or if there's another one you'd dare to recommend. It'd be perfect if it's free, since DM is not! Apart from that, I only dare to approach Dutch from either a Spanish or an English background, since my German is still poor. Anyway, using a foreign language everyday is not negligable at all, though you'd be capable of increasing your study time. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Here for my now like, monthly/bimonthly update.
Yesterday I spoke with my Dutch grandma on the phone for about 20 minutes. I should really do this more often, she's just the sweetest. I couldn't understand one turn of phrase she used, and sometimes I had to circumlocute like crazy, but all in all it was pretty frickin' effective communication. More importantly, this really reminded me that Dutch isn't just a hobby of mine or an intellectual exercise. My Oma only knows a few phrases of English, and the fact that she can now babble away at me about my love life (aw Grandma, come on) and such makes her super happy. Also, had I never learned Dutch, I might have never found out how frickin' cool my Oma is. I can never forget that that - people - is what learning a language is really about. Plus, it's just super cool chatting with my Oma because she doesn't care about how smart I sound, which takes the pressure off. It really makes me think that an ideal way to learn Dutch in the Netherlands would be by being locked in a retirement home or something (since those are the only places that Dutch is really necessary), buuut that's me going back to language nerdery again. In other news, I have kept up with Wie is... de Mol? these past few weeks, and that's just finished, so that brings up my Super Challenge film/TV episode count to 69. I also wrote my grandpa a letter to go along with his birthday card today, so that's something. Yaay! @tarvos: Mijn antwoord is al veel te laat, maar ik ga je toch beantwoorden. Het klinkt alsof veel Nederlanders met je eens zijn, met betrekking tot de rol van de koninklijke familie. Ik weet niet of ik iemand ooit hoorde zeggen dat hij of zij een koninklijke familie nodig had, maar gezien dat ze wel bestaan, is dat ook lekker aardig. En ja, wat ontzettend lief dat je je vrijmarkten buiten mogen hebben. :) @Dagane: It's great to hear that you're learning Dutch! I'll leave you a proper note on your log.
