SC English:
2 episodes of Doctor Who
1 of Grimm
1 of The Big Bang Theory
15 of Bones
= 9,5 movies

other than that: nada!
(my school life and related areas have changed into a small hell recently. Need to get
through this week and it should be better again. Yeah, perhaps I am being a naive
optimist and it will never get better)

SC English:12 episodes of Bones, 1 episode of Doctor Who = +6,5 movies.

And today, I should do some French reading. At the end of the week, I will count it
all.

I may be surprised and forced to leave English movies. Hmm. If I only knew where to
stream the other versions. I can use only the "illegal" ones because all those like
Netflix or the Amazon one do not provide the services for people in the Czech Republic
and other useless countries. We are in EU, than why can't this all be for EU as a
whole? I would like to pay the (reasonable) money for it, I am just not allowed to do
it. So, any ideas on where to stream (or download) tv series in French,Spanish or
German, please send me a message.

Anki is going well, I started a French deck and I am fighting those mega numbers of
German reviews. And I am sad about Memrise not getting any better since their horrible
changes. Anki has many advantages, it's just not as addictive for me. I even continued
the thread on memrise forums and sent them a mail with the idea to make Beta a separate
and paid service.

During this weekend, I'm going back to systematic German studies (I've been so lazy). I
have slowly started my huge French grammar review. And I will start Swedish. I just
really really want to and I don't mind slow progress.

The rest of my life is good, I'm just a bit unhappy about school now. I need to get
through the next exam time (June) but I am a bit afraid, lazy, nervous,
procrastinating, and so on. I need holidays! And the next year will be much better. I
am not naive, I know what I am going into and it will be awesome compared to this.

Hi, Cavesa!

I’m sorry I didn’t drop by your log sooner, but I’ve been quite busy this year to keep up with all the interesting posts on the forum. This weekend I’ve finally managed to read through your log and I’m flabbergasted by the sheer amount of books and films you’ve read and watched so far and by your ambitious plan for the rest of the year.

I’ve been so discouraged by the Super Challenge demands that I’m not officially taking part, but rather I’ve devised a more “light” version of it for German and even so I’m way behind schedule. So keep up the good work!

Are you interested only in films and telefilms dubbed into your target languages or might original productions in your TLs work for you?

I ask because generally broadcasters (and most of them now have a website where they make their programmes available for streaming) only have the rights for their own productions. That’s why you can usually find the news, talk-shows and other entertainment programmes online: they are in-house productions and so broadcasters can do whatever they want with them. But with movies and series (and most of the world-wide famous ones are from the States) they only buy the rights for their own country and therefore can’t let people from abroad watch them.

But there’s also good news. If you are willing to watch original productions, you may be in luck and be able to watch several hours of TV legally online.

For German, for instance, you can go to the ZDF Mediathek, and watch German tv-movies (Fehrnsehfilm) or series. I personally prefer the Fehrnsehfilms because I’d rather watch stand-alone films than episodes half of which I risk missing. Maybe they are not as cool as the American programmes, but from a language learner’s point of view they are perfectly ok.

For Spanish there’s RTVE (look out for the section A la carta).

For Swedish (when you start it) there’s SVTplay.

For German there are Mediatheks also for ARD, Das Erste and RTL.

I can watch several films on these sites from here, so I hope you can do it from where you live as well. Unfortunately I’m not doing much French at the moment, so I can’t help you with French programmes.

Finally, Europe has been moving from analogue to (free-to-air) digital TV in the past few years. I don’t know when the Czech Republic switched over/will switch over, but if or when you get digital TV, make sure to check whether any broadcaster offers a second audio channel for the original soundtrack (check for the “Audio” button on your remote control or read the instructions of your decoder or TV-set). I understand that this is stupid advice if you already know about it, but it took me far too long to realize I had the opportunity to listen to the original audio on several TV-channels not to mention it here. And make sure you check again every few months, as the number of channels offering the service may increase (we’ve recently gone from 4 to 6 here in Italy). Then, if the TV-market in the Czech Republic is anything like in Italy, you’ll be able to watch huge amounts of films and series especially in English, but also in French, German and the odd film in other exotic languages.

Thanks a lot, Emme.

I love to watch something originally in the target language but the trouble is to get
something that is as well fun for me. I know there are for example news easily
available but I am bored after certain dose of news. And I usually not in the mood for
something serious, as I use the series both for languages and relax. So, I am at least
trying to avoid bad dubbings, when there is no other option.

I'll look at the links, they look awesome. Could be precisely what I need, if they will
work (I'll have a look right away). I hate when the tv, for example BBC, lets
everything there for free but only for the citizens of their country. What do we have
the EU for? The EU claims to support language learning and all that jazz, but they do
too little to remove the artificial obstacles.

The Czech Republic switched to digital broadcast a few years ago (and how the old
people hated it :-D ) but firstly, this option to broadcast both languages is underused
(because majority of people watching tv is stupid and doesn't demand it enough, those
more clever either don't watch much tv or we download things from the internet to avoid
the limited tv offer aimed at the stupid crowds). And more importantly: I do not have a
television. I live with my boyfriend and we don't need it. We download or stream most
of what we want to watch, sometimes we go to the cinema or I buy a dvd abroad. But
mostly, we use the internet.

p.s. YES! RTVE works! ZDF works! I'll try the rest later. Thanks, Emme!

And I nearly forgot what I originally wanted. I'm enjoying the SC so much, because that
is what I do the most in the languages. There are weeks when I don't do any "real"
language studying at all as I am busy or lazy or both. But there is not a single week
during which I wouldn't read or watch something for fun. But I understand the numbers can
be quite scary to other kinds of people and learners. They are scary for me as well at
times, but I will have most of the summer to catch up and finish most of it all.

And next round, I won't be a fool anymore. I will take a smaller load, probaly 3 or 4
normal challenges.

To watch something in French I usually just type "documentaire" in the search bar on YT and a lot of things come up. I stumbled upon two interesting shows recently. Secrets d'Histoire and L'ombre d'un dout. Both tackle historical subjects and even though I get bored easily those two shows held my interest. So I recommend you check them out and watch those episodes that interest you. Also, arte.tv.fr has a lot of videos featured that I have no problem streaming from PL. They also have a German version of the site.
