I'm trying the Gold List only because it fits with a need I have right now. I've been reading easy adapted stories for some time and recording the words I didn't recognize. Some words I had already listed and looked up in the glossary a half dozen times over a period of several weeks. (That's sort of gold list anyway.)
So from my original lists of masses of words and repeated words, I culled 20 for each day for the Gold List. That means that some of the words were already semi-familiar and that as I continued to read, some kept reappearing in the stories.
After the first distillation, the results are questionable, I feel more confident about the words that I have seen repeatedly. But those words I've only seen 2 or 3 times will go the limit, I fear.
I'll continue with the system (until I get bored) because it does make me focus on the words instead of just reading the next story.

My own feeling on this was that writing is (for me) slower than typing, so that I was forced to pay more attention to the words as I wrote them out. For words I wanted to learn this was a great advantage, since I could wallow in them, and ponder them as I wrote. For words I had no interest in, though, the writing was a chore I couldn't wait to escape from. |

Which is basically what I was trying to say earlier -- it's not the physical "writing a list" that makes the words stick, it's what you're doing with the words in your head while writing.
The description of the Gold List technique is missing a vital step.

That's a pretty huge assumption to make as someone who has never actually tried it.

I have used goldlists for a few months now, trying out several variations (such as combining them with Iversen's idea of writing the target word twice per row). |

I was wondering about that, maybe you have an answer: How does this method compare to Iversen's lists in terms of time needed, effectiveness, and so on?

I just finished distilling several lists myself and I'm not impressed. I remembered three words from the first list, one of which I already knew but not very well and the other two were both very similar so just by seeing the two near each other I was reminded of the meanings, and I didn't remember any other words at all, let alone 30% of each list.
These were all words I really wanted to learn, too. It was hard to resist just abandoning the lists and plugging them into my SRS.
I really did enjoy creating the initial lists though. I may try this method again with a much shorter wait time, such as 1 week or a few days.

That would defeat the purpose of the system, though.
I'm not remembering 30% either, except that I probably end up being close to 30% when I am forced to make decisions about what I actually do know (words I didn't think I knew and must admit I rather know them now that I must delete them from the list) and when you factor in the fact that words from the list pop up in my everyday life so that when I return to the list, those words have been learned in the interval.
While I am torn between feeling like someone scammed me, is probably laughing and I am simply ignoring it, or entirely ignoring the fact that I am ignoring, I must still admit that this is the only time I've ever made vocabulary lists of any kind and I AM finding some benefit to it because I do frequently think "Oh! I know that word!" or "What was that word again, I wrote it down in my list!" and the lists are indeed increasing my passive vocabulary.
I have yet to distill a list twice though. As I distill them for the first time, I do notice that I have a lot more time to review the words. As I said in previous posts, my initial list takes so long for me to put together that I have very little time to study them if I am to stick to the 20-minute rule. I'm no so sure what to do about that yet.

If the creator of the system can't provide anything other than anecdotal evidence/opinion to support his assertion of the most effective way of doing it, surely ALS is free to experiment with it himself?
