I can't find anything on Google regarding Japanese fonts being removed from the iPhone. I emailed the
authors of Japanese (dictionary for iOS) and it's not just my phone they've emailed Apple about it... I sent
Apple feedback too. I don't know if app authors get more respect or not. So bummed. I don't really want to
use my phone to study Japanese like this. Maybe I can root my iPhone and fix it?

I presume they don't know - I certainly wouldn't before I started Japanese!

I suppose it's both. I say they don't care because I'm taking Android into account. I always figured Apple showed the proper kanji because they.. well.. cared. But my e-mail response from the Dictionary App authors was pretty good.. they know this stuff better than me (no surprise). And it seems it worked before more or less just by happenstance. Android, as many in these forums know, has had this issue for years and years and years and no fix. After years of not fixing it, and I know people have tried to bring it to their attention, I assume they do not care. I'm now assuming Apple will do the same thing and just ignore it. But I may be wrong.
I'm wondering if I jailbreak the phone if there's a process to fix it that isn't too over my head.

I think they'll fix it in the next iOS update because you don't even have to wait for them to fix it to get it working... Apple really does care I think =D.
There's this menu under Settings -> General -> Languages & Region -> "Preferred Language Order".
It disappeared from my iPhone but this menu was on my iPad for some reason. My iPad has a Korean keyboard active on it but I hadn't bothered to do so on my iPhone. They both have Japanese romaji keyboards active. What the heck, I enabled it. I went to the languages & region and magically, "Preferred Language Order" was there.
I can't backtrack to figure it out but I think that before upgrading to 8.1 on my iPhone I had activated the Japanese keyboard.. maybe. And when I upgraded to 8.1 it didn't realize that Japanese was a preferred language for me - if I had activated the keyboard after installing the 8.1 update it would have added it as a priority language and enabled the whole language priority thing in settings. Deleting Korean doesn't remove the Preferred Language Order setting, it's still there.
Anyway. It's fixed. I'm happy with my iPhone again. Phew.

I decided to play around with anki and discovered the step option.. you can make it test you X min/seconds again when you're wrong, again in x minutes, and again in x more minutes.. or whatever you want. This is a feature I've dreamed about and wanted the app author of Flashcards Deluxe to implement.
I'm gonna have to make myself learn anki. I am pretty content just using premade decks for the time being. I have some korean decks though that need audio.. even if it's text to speech audio. I will have to figure out how to add that. hmm I will have to figure out how to add pictures too =/.

I've added some text to speech audio to a lot of anki cards in the korean decks I downloaded... I might go back and use native but that would take longer and I think the TTS voice on my computer is pretty darn good. So I went to synch and that's when I realized that I have had media synch turned off since sometime in August on my desktop anki. When I installed anki on my phone a few days ago, it synched the decks and a lot of media no problem. I guess since so much media was still on ankiweb from before it was ok. But now I had to synch it again.. for the first time in months.. and it has been synching for over 12 hours. It's probably about 2 hours from finishing. I'm really hoping that the phone won't be another 14 hours of synching.
I am using the premade core 6k deck further optimized, pic/sound 0 to 6k and 6- 10k (and up to 15k I think but just pics no audio). It tests closed delete and reading kanji so that's 12000 cards. I disabled the 1st 2k since they're stupid easy. I'm getting a mix of stuff I already know well, knew but forgot, and haven't seen. So far the deck has given me 97% closed delete cards for whatever reason. I only started yesterday. I quickly decided to do away with the recommended word order. They group it by kanji which if you're just testing to read it, probably would be easier, but if you have to produce it, it's anything but. Too many synonyms. I think so many synonyms all at once would drive me crazy anyway.
I'm glad I figured out how to add sound to existing decks. I'm exporting the deck to excel and then importing it again. You can do it within anki but so far that seems a bit more difficult although not terribly so. I haven't figured out how to make my own vocabulary deck yet that includes media etc. The introduction video involves typing in words one by one within anki and that's really not how I plan to make my decks. I use rikai-sama to import lists of vocabulary. And I am going to want pictures too. But it's looking doable.. I'm sure I'll figure it out.
I really like the control I have regarding how often I get tested. I am finding that if I am reviewing.. the app doesn't want to go below the 10 minute mark even if I keep getting it wrong. I'm gonna investigate that a little. If I get it wrong it should reduce the time all the way down to 20 seconds if need be. That's what I have set as the minimum time interval. Because my brain can turn into a brick sometimes =p.

Flash Cards Deluxe came out with a new version offering some nice features so I think I'll be using that more than Anki. I like the control Anki gives over how often you review cards but it's kind of a pain to make your own decks.
One thing I tried doing that never occurred to me for whatever reason. I turned off the due cards stats etc while reviewing. I only did this today. For the umpteenth time I was staring at the due cards, wishing the number would go down faster so I could finish already. Now that it's off the screen I don't focus on that as much and this seems good. Like watching water boil or watching the clock at work when you have nothing to do and it makes it move slower.

How's it going? You up for the N2? Me I'm afraid I'm falling into a blissfully comforting sense of inevitable failure. It doesn't bother me as much as it used to, which is not good. Maybe I need more peer pressure, I'm thinking.
