I tried out iKnow.jp. I really liked it. If it were free I'd be using it. It's not free so I have to consider if it's ideal
or not. They have nice preset lists of vocabulary, native audio, and sentences again with native audio. But
I'm really trying to learn the kanji for words I do. The decks I make on my own include the kanji meanings
which I use to remember how to spell the word using the kanji. Their site/app (they have a nice iPad app too)
doesn't include this. I'm debating how important it is for me. I actually do remember the meanings of the
kanji anyway most of the time for most kanji I see anyway but I like to be able to quickly double check myself.
They let you double check the stroke order of a kanji by clicking on the kanji for more info and frankly I'm
confused why they'd give stroke order w/o the meaning. Oh well.

meh. How much do I want those sentences with native pronunciation?

My Japanese really seems to be getting better. I'm watching Gilgamesh and I understand tons of what
they're saying. I am guessing it's just that this anime happens to use lots of vocab I've studied but it's pretty
cool. I watched Rashomon for class today and I definitely didn't understand tons of the dialogue there only
bits and pieces. (it's an old classic from 1950)

I'd say iKnow is worth it. I've been using it since February and am now on Core 4000. It's fabulous. I use the spoken sentences for both listen-repeat and for shadowing, alternating between them. The way they do the reviews is great too, because they gradually change the way they ask you, making it gradually harder.

If you really want to check the meaning of the individual kanji, turn on rikaisama, mouse over the kanji and click shift a couple of times to switch to the kanji dictionary.

When I last logged in to iKnow they gave me 5 trial sessions. If you have something like that I'd just say trial it over a few days and see how much you learn. The native audio is great but for me personally I just found I couldn't learn new stuff from the format of it. I know some people who have learned loads from it though, so if it does work for you it will be worth the money.

What did you think of Rashomon? I've not sat down with a classic like that for ages. Will they be getting you to watch any Ozu films as well?

That with only 5 trials is kind of dumb. You don't really get to see how it works. I was a little skeptical after the trial, but I signed up anyway because several people recommended it. Now I'm glad I did. In my opinion though, they should let you do one entire step (100 words) all the way through rather than just 5 sessions.

Yeah I had used it on and off before it went behind the pay wall and had already used it enough to know that the format was just not for me. I just prefer to meet new words in other contexts. It's a personal preference rather than a flaw with the system. I used to quite like the dictation feature they had, but for me personally it's not enough to justify the cost.

I liked it. I was a little frustrated over the low quality of the audio since I'm obviously trying to understand the
Japanese myself. But the story was very interesting and I liked the acting quite a bit - the guy who played the
villain was particularly dead on I thought. We had to answer questions about it regarding whose story we felt
was most believable and I pretty much didn't believe anyone. I didn't do any research online on the film -
someone mentioned a psychological effect or whatnot being named after the film. I'm pretty curious about
that (I had no idea heh, feel a little ignorant now).

I don't think we'll be watching any more films for this class - we've got a couple books on the reading list. It's
not too ambitious a class (which I for one am glad for heh).

I'm tempted to give it a try. I probably won't be using the desktop version though - I like the iPad one and I
prefer to study on my iPad anyway. I can switch out to my dictionary app and lookup the word for the kanji
definitions.. it's just a few moments more than what I'd have to do in my app.

I'm trying iKnow out. Well beyond the trial which I had already used up before I posted here about it. I didn't
even get through any of my first five sessions but it was enough to give me a taste of how it works and I love
the sentences a lot. So I spent 12 dollars on a months subscription... cheaper than Rosetta stone which I
think I will be cancelling anyway. Not exactly cheap though heh. But if I use it every day I think it's worth it..
And I don't have to make the decks and thats a good time saver and helps justify the cost.
