I finished! I thought I was going to push right into the new year, but my reading
speed increased dramatically after book 90. Almost all were excellent ... French
literature has turned out to be even richer than I imagined. And there were some, like
Balzac, that I did not like at first, gave up on, but really liked when I came back to
them when my French was better.

*** Rank with my favorite books of all time, either for the power of the writing, the
emotional impact the book had, or if it will come to define a place or event for me
(e.g., I will always view the Iranian revolution through the eyes of Marjane Satrapi).

Germinal. Émile Zola, 1885.
Mémoires d'Hadrien. Marguerite Yourcenar,1951.
Du côte de chez Swann. Marcel Proust, 1913.
Persèpolis, Vol 1-5. Marjane Satrapi. 2007 (bandes dessinées)

** Great books that I'd recommend to my friends, small but perfect shorter stories, or
even excellent but flawed books (e.g., Les Mis with it's endless tangents)

Madame Bovary. Gustave Flaubert, 1856.
Le Grand Meaulnes. Alain-Fournier, 1913.
Le hussard sur le toit. Jean Giono, 1951.
Voyage au bout de la nuit. Louis-Ferdinand Céline. 1932
Harry Potter, J. K. Rowling. L' école des sorciers, 1997; La Chambre
des Secrets
, 1998; Le prisonnier d'Azkaban, 1999; La Coupe de Feu,
2000.
L'immoraliste. André Gide, 1905.
Candide, ou l'optimisme. Voltaire, 1759.
Les misérables. Victor Hugo, 1862.
La symphonie pastorale. André Gide, 1919.
Pêcheur d'Islande. Pierre Loti, 1886.
L'écume des jours. Boris Vian 1947.
Le père Goriot. Honoré de Balzac, 1835.
Le chat du rabbin. Joann Sfarr. La Bar-Mitsva, 2001; T2 Le Malka des
Lions
, T3 L'Exode, 2003. (bandes dessinées)
Siegfried. Alex Alice. T1 Siegfried, 2007; T2 la Walkyrie, 2009.
(bandes dessinées)

* Other books to put on your reading list!

Bel ami. Guy de Maupassant, 1885.
Pierre et Jean. Guy de Maupassant, 1887.
L'Homme à l'envers, Fred Vargas, 2009.
La vie mode d'emploi. Georges Perec 1978
Vingt mille lieues sous les mers - première partie. Jules Verne, 1870.

Bandes dessinées:
Musée du Louvre editions. Les sous-sols du révolu: Extraits du journal d'un
expert
. Marc-Antoine Mathieu, 2006; Le ciel au-dessus du Louvre, Bernar
Yslaire, 2009; Rohan au Louvre. Hirohiko Araki, 2010; Aux heures
impaires
. Eric Liberge, 2008.
Les aventures de Tintin. Hergé. Le lotus bleu, 1936. L'Oreille
cassée
,1937.
Astérix. René Goscinny, Astérix le gaulois, 1961. La serpe d'or,
1962.
Blacksad. Juan Díaz Canales and Juanjo Guarnido. Quelque part entre les
ombres
, 2000. Arctic-Nation, 2003.

Partially read:

Au Bonheur des Dames. Émile Zola. 1883
La chartreuse de Parme. Stendhal, 1839
Les compagnons du crépuscule. François Bourgeon. Le Sortilège du bois des
brumes
. 1984.

edit: dropping Voyage down to four stars. I jumped the gun when I gave it 5*. It's a
powerful book, but the latter half has too much nasty misanthropy for me to list it as
an all-time favorite.

It's done! I have just finished watching "100 films" in French!
I had just started very recently, in May this year, with very few listening experience and even less skills. Since then, I primarily watched dubbed TV series, partly with subtitles. Among others, I watched

- Grey's Anatomy (1 season, with subtitles)
- Fringe (3 seasons, with subtitles)
- Doctor Who (3 seasons, without subtitles)
- Bones (1 season, with subtitles)
- Gilmore Girls (1 season, with subtitles)

and tons of 'Miscellaneous' on French and Wallonian television, of which I liked best the few episodes I watched of 'Monk'.

My listening skills have moved to around 50 % in average, and I am really greatful to the initiator of this challenge, as I wouldn't have watched as much without.

I continued using subtitles until the very end, which I believe is the correct way for me, as I thus had the chance to look up unknown words, which was unavoidable in the beginning and is still pushing my French to higher levels. Looking forward to participating the next challenge... :-)

Could there be a better Christmas present??

I'm still working on my 1/2 challenge, but reading with renewed interest. I'll post it in 2014 when I finish. Pleased
for everyone who's participated. I can really tell a great difference in my abilities to read and especially my listening
comprehension. I stopped recording my listening time after I finished the 1/2 challenge part, but continued to look
up interviews & watch documentaries on youtube, probably to the detriment of my reading! Looking forward to the
rest of break, when I can read for longer periods uninterrupted by work ...

With less than eight hours to go I just finished my Super Challenge in German:

10150 pages and 302 movies.

I'm going to enjoy a bottle or two of cava later tonight!

Solfrid: Many thanks for suggesting and organizing this challenge. I came across HTLAL and the challenge right at the beginning of my effort to learn German and it's been an enormous help. The challenge has really become the core of my self-study method. I have gone from A1 at the start to somewhere in B2 in my TL for reading and listening. So many many thanks.

Is there going to be a list of all those who finished and what their challenges were? I am very curious to see what other people have done.

A full list of the books and films I have read can be found on my blog.
