Dear language learning friends,

1th January 2013 has come and so have my New Year's resolutions and the beginning of
TAC 2013. I am not part of any team this time but I will be reading many of you and I'm
looking forward to it. I wish you all a great year, both in language learning and your
lives.

Last year, I have progressed mostly in my Freutsch languages but not as much as I had
planned. So I have thought well of my new goals. They are realistic. I will as well
continue my Super Challenge madness.

I'll be covering my French grammar gaps, progressing my Spanish and German, devouring a
lot of native material in all my languages, I will finally seriously start Swedish,
when and if the time allows it. I will no longer use Memrise as the new version is
horrible in my opinion. They threw away the best features and went right against what
the users were asking for. I am going back to Anki and I am going to buy the mobile
version as I got a tablet as a Christmas present (Yay!)

The Super Challenge status (will be updated every month):

the English Advanced Challenge:
at the beginning of the year: 195 books and 124 movies to go
Movie part finished at the end of June
books: 128,6 x 100 pages left (22rd October)

the French Advanced Challenge:
at the beginning of the year:199 books and 181,5 movies to go
movies: 109,5 left (22th October)
books: 152,3 x 100 pages left (22th October)

the Spanish Half Challenge 50/50
50 books and 39 movies to go

the German Half Challenge 50/50
50 books and 50 movies to go

Both half challenges abandoned in July.

which all sums up to 41,25 books and 28,5 movies per month. I must be crazy. Let's see
how far I get. After all, I hope to have a lot of holidays during 2013 :-)
update 19th July: To finish, I need a daily dose of 220 pages and 0,9 movie.

SC:

English: movies from around the Christmas holidays and the beginning of January

6 episodes + christmas special of Doctor Who = 4 films
1 episode of Once upon a time = ½ movie
3 episodes of Grimm = 1,5 movie
12 episodes of the big bang theory (each 20 mins) = 4 films
2 episodes of Lost = 1 movie

so now I am at 87 movies out of 200 (will update the original list accordingly at the
end of January)

Went to the library today and borrowed a few books. And I have a huge pile (rather
several piles and a bookshelf) waiting for me. If I pass my exam on the 23th, I will
have a week just for all this. I plan to read at least ten books during that week.

Non SC:

Working on my German, creating an anki deck, doing exercises, reviewing things. Bits of
time here and there.

Well, after about two hours spent on German review and typing words into anki, a few
thoughs came to my mind, concerning my goals. I shouldn't be giving myself the level I
want to achieve as a goal. I don't need to pass an exam at the end of every level. My
goal for all my languages (the long term goal, it may take me decades to get there in
some languages), is C2 passive skills and C1 active skills. But not all my skills are
going there at the same pace. While my reading is like a cheetah, my active skills are
trying hard to become an honorary turtle. So, I have different goals:

1. Massive amounts of input alias my Super Challenges.

2.Tying the loose ends. Finishing the courses and similar resources that I have begun
and squeezing all I can from them.

3.Anki. My Memrise adventure has ended due to the developers destroying most advantages
of the project in my opinion. I am back to anki and I want to use it to get my active
vocab to a level higher.

My goals for active vocabulary, which I will try to get to during this year:
at least 3000 German words (now I have like 500)
30 000 French ones (now like 10 000 active ones, a very rough estimate with no
scientific base :-))
10 000 Spanish ones (now a lot of passive ones but only about 1000 active ones)
These numbers may be far from reality.

4.Writing
My weak point in French. In English, I write as freely as in Czech (well, sometimes
even better. I should probably feel ashamed for neglecting my native language :-D). I
want French to be the same. I'll create a challenge for myself on that :-)

5.Exams?
I would like to do a C1 French exam during autumn. And perhaps German B1. But not sure
about that. Not sure whether I'll be ready, not sure whether I'll have the money.

6.Swedish.
If I have time to dive in properly, I will. If not, I will leave it for the next year.
Starting and ending again and again gets me nowhere. The same will later apply to any
other languages I would like to add to the mix (And there are many).

7. Have fun!

Things I will avoid:

1.Starting a new language when I have no time for it and too many loose ends for those
already on my plate. No more than three loose ends at once allowed!

2.Spreading myself too thin. I have a lot on my plate. I have already developped a good
way to avoid this so I just need to stick to it.

3.Procrastination. My enemy. My curse. My love-hate relationship with so many
timeeaters. Needs to go. Instead, there is time for work (university studies, part time
job if I find one again), time for fun work (languages) and time for fun (including
timeeaters).

Loose End Number One:

The better you'll get at German, the better you will be in Swedish. So it's a good idea
to take it easy and not take them all on the same time.

I'm curious how far you'll get with that, I don't even watch/read that amount in a year
haha. Can't wait to follow your progress!

Best of luck!

Thanks a lot for encouragement, Kez!

An update:

ASC En: 1 episode of Lost = 0.5 movie

Themen Aktuell 1
I have gone through the first two lessons in two days, put all the vocab in Anki, done
a lot of exercises. Hopefully, I will soon get to the lessons 5-8, which I had done in
Berlin last year, and to the end of the course not long after that. I didn't do the
listening exercises, I will get a listening session sometime soon. I think it is more
beneficial to do more listening at once.

Plans for days to come:
On Friday, I will have a huge reading day. I haven't read whole day since I entered the
university. I'm looking forward to it. I'm gonna move my book counts forward!
From Saturday on, I will be seriously studying for an exam. As a relax in between, I
plan to watch an episode or two every day.
My Themen studies will go slower but still keep moving forward. I already know my next
two lose ends (one for French and one of Spanish) but won't tell until I'll have
started tying them :-)

What exactly do you mean by loose ends? It might be nice to at least have a list of them :)))

Loose ends are a wide collection of courses, grammars and other material I have started
or used a part of and want to complete. There are far too many. And, to satisfy your
curiosity, I will put there a list :-), however it may be incomplete, even though it's
gonna be long. And I do not expect to complete all of that this year, of course.

German:
Themen Aktuell 1 (and I will definitely do the 2 and 3 after that)
Německy s úsměvem
Němčina pro samouky
Assimil (I got stuck around lesson 28 or so)
Grundwortschatz (havent checked spelling, not sure about it now)
and I will add to this a grammar exercise book or two, which I haven't started yet.

Spanish:
Fiesta 1 (again, 2 and 3 will follow)
Učebnice současné španělštiny 1 (a great Czech textbook, level 2 follows)
Gramatica A1/A2 and Vocabulario A1/A2 by Anaya (nice exercise books, two levels follow)
Assimil
I will probably use another grammar exercise book as well, need to remove any
interferences with French.

French:

covering gaps:
Francouzština nejen pro samouky (a basic Czech textbook with some good parts even for
me now, long time ago, I went through most of that)
Francouzština pro pokročilé samouky 1 and 2 (started it some time ago)
Alter Ego 4 (followed by 5. This series has got some great features, such as really
nice explanations of writing requirements of the delf and dalf)
vocabulaire progressif all levels
both Assimils

huge grammar review and a lot of work on details:
Grammaire progressive de francais, intermed, adv, perfectionnement (did part of each
already)
l'exercisier
mluvnice současné francouzštiny
cvičebnice fr gramatiky (a huge exercise book to finish my grammar studies completely)

exam preparation:
Dalf C1/C2
reussir le dalf

That huge mass of things should finish my French studies. After that, I will only
practice, use the language and slowly gather new vocab for the rest of my life.

English:
I could do with a grammar review (blue and green murphy). I write a lot and speak quite
a lot but I've quite recently caught myself making some stupid mistakes again.

Swedish:
If have time to study it seriously, I will come back to Assimil, FSI and Colloquial and
will add Czech Švédština nejen pro samouky.
.......
Thanks Anya :-)
