Why does every Japanese textbook/course think that "telegram" is such an important word? I've certainly never sent or seen a telegram before. Is it even still possible to send telegrams? Do they still exist? But apparently, even in modern Japanese courses, telegram is considered more important than mobile telephone. |

I've never seen a place to send a telegram here in Japan. I find what you said fascinating.

On Monday, the landlord said that he had an electrician coming “tomorrow or the next day.” By my calculations that should have been Tuesday or Wednesday. Not it’s Thursday and still no electrician. I’ve got to get tough. No more could you please fix it if it’s not too much trouble, now it’s going to be FIX IT OR ELSE.
This will probably shock all those Norwegians out there. It might even be sacrilege. But brown cheese isn’t bad on pizza. As long as you don’t expect it to taste like pizza.
My mystery is getting more and more mysterious and even Holmes the cat isn’t giving any hints. I’m a little sad that I won’t be able to buy any new books for a while. I still have plenty to read, but I’m getting hooked on these mysteries and would like to buy more.
I just went through my budget for next year. It wasn’t pretty. Assuming nothing unexpected happens beyond the unexpected things that I’ve already calculated in, I end up only about kr 10 000 in plus :-( but it’s better than minus.
Even though it takes up a lot of time, I’m really having fun organizing TAC. I hope they let me do it next year too.

Brunost på pizza? Hvordan smakte det? Selv er jeg ikke så fan av varm brunost (som
brukes av enkelte som saus på raspeballer/potetball/komle/kjært barn har mange navn)
Og hva er det japanske ordet for telegram?

You have a call out to an electrician too? What's wrong with these guys. Mine won't respond either. Are they too busy laying cables for christmas lights? :D

Brunost brukes ofte med syltetøy og tomat er egentlig en frukt, så den var ganske grei på pizza. Den ble ikke sånn som sausene som lages av brunost. Det var ikke smeltet, bare litt varm kanskje.
Telegram = 電報 = でんぽう and I think I've come across it in every Japanese course I've seen.
I don't have to get the electrician. The landlord said that he'd already arranged for him to come. That's why I expected him. He said that someone was coming to look at the internet too, but I haven't seen him either. So, I'm going to start asking the landlord every day until he gets so sick of me that he fixes everything.

電報 var ikke i Genki I eller II -- eller kanskje jeg ikke leste nøye nok. :p
Hva slags japanskkurs bruker du? Jeg ditcha lærebøker etter jeg "runda" Genki 2 i
august.

I'm not using textbooks so much now. It's just that I came across the word in iKnow and it reminded me that I've seen it so many times before. I don't think it's just in Japanese courses. I'm know I've seen it in other courses as well, but it struck me as very strange when I saw it in iKnow. A lot of textbooks take and recycle material from previous versions or other textbooks, so they might not bother to remove those kinds of words. But iKnow is a relatively new, internet-based learning site. The Web didn't even exist back then when telegrams were common!

I think I've only seen it in kanji books, given as one example among a few on how to use 報. Anyway, if you decide you want to start reading books written in the era of telegrams, it could come in useful. And I bet you'll never forget it now!
