Did you mail-order it? It is cheaper on Amazon than it would be in a bookstore. I assembled a bunch of Hindi materials a few years ago, and now it looks like if and when I get to studying it, I'll need to buy yet another text. No, I didn't mail order it. Bought it at the store. Thankfully the gift card and other
discounts made it cheaper. It's been a while since I've bought a book in the store; I buy pretty much everything used online because of how cheap it is. The only problem is how long it takes to get there... I'm clearly too impatient. Out of curiosity, why would you need another text? Are the materials you have now too elementary or just not good enough?
I'm paranoid about not buying things because I always imagine that they are going to buy it. Who they are, I don't know, but they are always there. They bought the Icelandic course I'd been eying for at least a year at Borders and they bought that Swedish course I'd been thinking about buying. I feel like if I don't buy something NOW, somebody else will get it. Ironically, I rarely ever buy things... Thanks for the advice; I probably need it. :P One day of school left, whoo~. Unfortunately, I didn't get to do any reading today. A friend of my parents gave birth (well, had a c-section) and so we went to see the baby. I have a pretty substantial collection of Hindi materials at various levels. The comprehensive introductory courses in the collection are TY Hindi and "Le Hindi sans peine". The reason for another text is that when I finally decide that it is actually time to learn Hindi, I will want to have the best that is available at that point. If something new is on the market that is even better than what I have, I will end up buying it to give myself maximum advantage. I will then be asking myself what was the point stockpiling materials I ended up not using.

The advice may have been for you, but I have a feeling I need it too. I am a bit of an
impulse buyer... the only thing is that I have no money. ;)

I am of working age, but having money makes the problem worse, not better. :) I actually solved it to some extent by budgeting and record-keeping. Several years ago, at the end of the year, I made a list of everything language-related I purchased during that year and set two thirds of the total amount spent as my annual hobby budget. The following year, I recorded every language-related purchase right away. I very soon realized that I was spending most of the budget on learning materials I might never use while running low on money for content acquisition, i.e., novels, audiobooks, DVD's, etc. So, I started avoiding learning materials I didn't immediately need and used the money for content. Головная боль - headache Диарея - diarrhea Aaaand I finally finished Chapter 10 of the New Penguin Russian Course! Yes. Feels so good to be done with it! Now I've got the Prepositional, Accusative, and Genitive case under my belt; the Dative and Instrumental are all that's left. For some weird reason I never made it to Instrumental when I first read the book. I read the chapter but I never got around to actually practicing it. So yeah, some vocabulary from the book: Вещь - thing всего - in all Иностранный - foreign конверт - envelope Марка - stamp Кроме - besides, excepting неудобно - (it's) awkward/uncomfortable пирог - pie с вокзала - from the station совсем - completely сок - juice так как - since, because цена - price Also, a dialogue from the book, but extended. Just thought this was a weird situation: РОБЕРТ Здравстсуйте. У вас есть бананы? Б Бананов нет. РОБЕРТ У вас есть апелсины? Б Нет. РОБЕРТ А что же у вас есть? Б Есть яблоки. Других фруктов нет. РОБЕРТ Что?! Почему? Б Ты не знаешь? Мы в рецессии! РОБЕРТ Неважно! Есть рецессия в Америка тоже, а там есть фрукты! Б Кажется, что американская экономия силней, чем украинская экономия. Может-быть. Now, before the Ukrainians murder me, let me explain this piece. There's a dialogue in my course that goes "Do you have bananas? No. So what do you have? Apples. We don't have any other fruit." It seemed to me really weird - what kind of shop (and it was in a shop) sells only apples? That's where this conversation came from. :P Managed to do 23 minutes of reading Harry Potter while listening to the Russian audio before I was distracted by a friend on MSN. :P I feel pretty sick and that first chapter wasn't too exciting anyway so I doubt I would have been able to do 2 hours like some people recommend, so I guess I'll try with the second chapter tomorrow. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||||||||

Went through Chapter 11, woot! I already knew this chapter pretty well (past tense and reflexive verbs - perhaps the easiest chapter in the book) but it introduced a lot of new vocabulary. Some of it is presented below: Штука - joke Уже нет (gen) - there are/is no... туман - fog тапочки - slippers строиться - to be built Сосед - neighbor смеяться - to laugh (у)слышать - to hear сержусь - I'm angry раздевайтесь - undress (take your coat off) в прошлом году - last year продолжать - continue в порту - at the port открывается - it opens закрывается - it closes Опоздание - lateness I know a lot of people want things to be "in context" for the SRS. What I do with some of these words is that I take them and Google them to find sentences that use them. This is how I end up with such gems as "Нужно ли продолжать диалог с Ираном?" (Do we need to continue the dialog with Iran?) and "Что ожидать от России II" (What to expect from Russia II). It's pretty funny sometimes. Because a lot of words have irregular or hard to remember genitive plurals, I simply incorporate them into my SRS experience. For example, the gen pl of марка is марок, so I just put in "Пять марок" and there, I remember the genitive plural as there. The same goes for words with genders I have difficulty remembering or with weird plurals - I incorporate them into the question somehow. I bet a lot of people do this, but I like talking about it. :) Also, being as I am such a good etymologist (LIES), I couldn't help but wonder if 'Сосед' once had a soft sign at the end.
