I suspect that “A o čemu pisati?” is a personal/stylistic choice rather than something that aligns neatly with ethnic categorization. As I learned it, da here is understood as "should" and so you have "And what should I write about?". “A o čemu pisati?” comes off as “And/So what to write about?” which isn't wrong either (or at least it doesn't seem that strange). Both questions are grammatical in any variant of BCMS/SC although the translations don't overlap totally. Here're a few other examples: - O čemu da pišem? (Croatian blog) - Blogovanje – kako početi? (Serbian blog, scroll down and you'll see a subsection with the title “O čemu pisati”) - O čemu pisati? (Croatian blog) - Kvalitet sajta i o čemu pisati (Serbian site on SEO) - Neispričana priča o sedam slonova (Bosnian site - scroll down to the fourth paragraph. Your last posts were very inspiring, Radioclare. I feel compelled to go for Czech (and Croatian) but I have to get better with Russian, even if my focus is mostly reading. I chose 'duty' over 'love' when it came to choosing a Slavic language to begin with. It's impressive what you've been doing with Croatian, allowing the language to grow in your life, even during difficult moments. The fact you already completed the SC is impressive! I'm doing 1-full and 5-half challenges and I still haven't reached the 5000 pages, summing up all languages. Then you say you have the feeling that your reading ability in Croatian is similar to that one in German years ago: the same happens to me, I can compare my reading skills at a 'younger' language to the way they were at an 'older' language before and that is rewarding, because it allows me to notice how progress is taking place.

I think it is a lot easier to do a SC in one language than in 6! Whenever I read your log I am impressed by how much self-discipline you have. I'm not very good at doing things out of duty. I really feel that I have a duty to learn French, but that doesn't give me enough motivation to actually do it. Czech and Russian scare me a bit because of the pronunciation. Particularly that ř sound in Czech! But I am trying to reassure myself that the first time I started learning Czech, all I had was a cassette tape to imitate pronunciation from and nowadays there is so much more information on the internet. I find it really difficult to assess how much progress I am making and also it feels like a really long time since I learnt a language (12 years since I started learning German, 8 years since I became fluent in Esperanto) so I feel out of practice. I think I will have to see how I get on speaking Serbian while I am on holiday and see whether I can feel a tangible improvement from my last year before I decide what to do next. :) 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Last night I started trying to write about Esperanto in Croatian. Having just received some corrections on Lang 8, I think I managed to make an error in every single sentence which is probably a personal best :D
*** Saznala sam za esperanto kad sam imala osamnaest godina. Tada sam učila njemački, i najbolji prijatelj mi je bio Nijemac. Pisali smo si duga pisma i on mi je u jednom rekao da je počeo učiti esperanto. Nikad prije nisam čula za taj jezik, pa sam morala otići u knjižnicu da ga potražim u enciklopediji. Pročitala sam da je esperanto neutralni međunarodni jezik koji ne pripada nekom narodu ili državi. Bila sam u toj dobi odlučena pacifista, pa mi se učenje esperanta učinilo kao dobra ideja. Uštedila sam novac, kupila knjigu o esperantu i počela učiti jezik. Jasno se sjećam da sam pročitala četiri poglavlja. Zvuči kao da to nije mnogo, ali esperanto nije težak jezik i tijekom tih poglavlja sam već naučila kako se tvore futur i prošlo vrijeme. Bila sam zadivljena logikom i jednostavnošču jezika. To međutim nije dugo trajalo, zato što mi je moj prijatelj uskoro počeo slati pisma u kojima je opisivao susrete s esperantistima. Kakva čudna ponašanja imaju! Usprkos tome što sam pacifista, nikada nisam bila nikakav hipi i nisu mi se svidjele priče o tome da svaki esperantist voli svakog drugoga esperantista samo zbog toga što oboje govore esperanto. Ja svakako ne volim svakog Engleza samo zbog toga što govori engleski. Stoga sam prestala učiti Esperanto. *** What I have learned from my corrections... 1) Esperanto doesn't have a capital letter in Croatian. Whoops! That was a mistake in most of my sentences. 2) It should be saznati za something and čuti za something rather than o. That's a useful thing to know. 3) I wrote "Pisali smo se" rather than "Pisali smo si". It never even occurred to me to use "si". 4) I seem to be confused about when to use "da" and when to use "što" to start a clause. Actually I thought I understood this and I didn't get it wrong in what I wrote the day before yesterday, so perhaps I was just tired. 5)I still can't get commas correct in any language. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I didn't write anything in Croatian yesterday. The lack of electricity at home means that we're eating out a lot and last night was curry night at our local pub. I had a glass of wine and so when I got home about 9pm I didn't feel clear-headed enough to start writing.
I did continue reading though and can announce that I have now finished "Pedeset nijansi slobodniji". I'm not sure what I am going to do now that I have exhausted my supply of trashy fiction :D This morning on the train I listened to the first 45 minutes of 'Grimizna Studija' again, following the text via a pdf on my phone. I know I need to watch some films. The problem I'm having is that while I can charge my devices at work I don't really have any films on my hard drive as I have been relying on Youtube or downloading things from other sites. I can use the internet in a limited way via my phone when I'm at home but if I start streaming lots of films then I will probably get a message from my phone provider informing me that I'm abusing the fair use policy. I had the following message yesterday re the bus tickets I was trying to book between Podgorica and Belgrade:
This message strikes fear into me. I have a horror of making phone calls in any language. I will go to extreme lengths to avoid making a phone call, even in English. The thought of calling some random guy in Podgorica and trying to explain who I am and that I need to arrange to pick up some bus tickets fills me with absolute dread :( 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I am not very happy today because my laptop was subjected to a Windows update last night and it appears to have killed it. I know this is just a small thing, but right now it feels like the final straw.
Anyhow. I was at a bit of a loss for what to read now that I've finished the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy. I started reading 'Dnevnik Anne Frank' and did about 15 pages but it wasn't holding my attention so I decided to try the Narnia series instead. I used to love those books when I was small. I have read about thirty pages of the first book, "Čarobnjakov nećak", so far. Last night I tried to make some progress with films and watched an episode of "Bitange i princeze' on my phone, but it seemed to use up a lot of battery so I couldn't watch a second episode. On the way home from work yesterday I decided to experiment with writing a paragraph of Croatian while offline. Normally if I try to write something I'm sitting at a computer and so I start looking up words I don't know in dictionaries or googling different word orders to see which has most hits and is therefore probably correct. There's a danger of getting too dependent on that sort of thing so I thought I'd test my vocabulary and abilities without any crutches. This is what I wrote:
The bits I've put in bold are the mistakes, which were corrected as follows: 1) "vratio iz esperantske susrete" should have been "vratio s esperantskih susreta". 2) "velikih vijesti" should have been "važnih vijesti" 3) "ako hoću da saznam odgovore" should have been "ako bi htjela saznati odgovore" 4) "da je mogu sve pitati ili na ruskom ili na esperanto" should have been "da je mogu sve pitati ali samo na ruskom ili na esperanto" 5) "studentkinja" should have been "studentica". I'm guessing "studentkinja" is a Serbian word that I used accidentally. 6) "provodila mnogo vremena s knjigom" should have been "uz knjigom" 7) "naučiti čak abecedu" should have been "čak niti abecedu naučiti" 8) "neću biti sposobna naučiti ruski da razgovaram s prijateljicom" should have been "nisam sposobna naučiti ruski kako bih mogla razgovarati s prijateljicom". Sigh. I am definitely learning a lot of stuff from doing this though. *** This weekend I am going to Esperanto HQ to make use of the electricity and attend a meeting. We're mainly going to be talking about our library, which has about 13,000 books. I say "about" because one of the things we need to discuss is how to complete our currently incomplete catalogue. The dream is that one day we will be able to get all the books scanned and online in a digital library. It would be amazing, but there are lot of practical problems to overcome. Destructive scanning is relatively cheap and we have already experimented with a few books, but a lot of what we have are unique books that need to be preserved and non-destructive scanning is a lot more expensive. We also have some very delicate things, like a first edition of the Unua Libro, which are in danger of turning to dust if someone so much as sneezes on them. In other Esperanto-related news, the books we sent are now on display in Foyles and apparently the Esperanto section now looks really good.
