I am still undecided as to how important I think writing kanji is too. Most of the time I write and take notes on the computer because it is so much quicker and easier, however it is also very helpful at times to be able to take notes by hand. It is also very helpful to be able to reproduce an unfamiliar character you have just seen without too much effort.
To start with I found that writing out the characters helped me to remember them well enough to recognise them, but as I have grown more used to them I am finding I can recognise a lot which I have no way of remembering how to write. I think I would like to make sure that I have a good knowledge, including reading and writing, of the 1006 elementary school characters. Beyond that I may find I am content with recognition only. I'm excited too :) Now that I know I'm not going to be tested in french anytime soon I can relax! I'm currently working on the weather. So for the "recognition" part of the day I've got some kanji to work on. I've only begun to try to recognize them -- they're new -- and even when I break them apart, some are not so easy to develop stories for. I had to look up graupel. Actually, it's something we have a lot of here in Norway. But here they call it "hagl" (hail). I always say to them,"You can't call those tiny things 'hail.' It's got to be at least pea-sized to be worthy of the name hail."

I had never heard of graupel either! I would have just translated あられ as hail. There is another Japanese word for larger hail stones, I've been told it at least three times and I still can't remember it!

German has all the words for all the different forms that water takes coming from the sky, so I feel like I'm prepared. Graupelregen, Hagel, Schneeregen are the first three that come to mind. Until I looked it up I didn't know there was a difference. Hagel is round, clear and hard and Graupel is closer to matted snow. We were getting Hagel a few weeks ago. Short cloudbursts of it -- weird. Maybe this new meteorological insight can help me develop a story for this complicated kanji? 霰

I was digging through my old forum logs this morning (man, they're embarrassing) and I found some useful reading, great for those interested in the Super Challenge (hint, hint!). These are fictional ghost stories and I have to say thanks again to UNZUM for providing me with the link to this site, many moons ago. I had to delete the audio links, they're too old, but I'll try to re-link later if I have time.
