Thank you Serpent, that's really interesting! I have never heard of a sour cherry in
English before but as you say, it would have a negative connotation. The only distinction I have ever heard made is between cherries and black cherries, but I'm not sure whether black cherries are sweet or sour. I'm guessing that I will get by in Croatian so long as I know that both 'trešnja' and 'višnja' are some type of cherry :) 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Oh dear, I have failed to update my log again for a couple of days. The good news is
that after consecutive weeks of working away I am now home for a fortnight, and while I will still be working quite long hours I should have at least an hour a day on my commute that I can devote to Croatian. On Thursday evening I read through three more chapters of 'Colloquial Croatian': chapters 6, 7 and 8. There is some really useful household vocabulary in chapter 6 which I didn't know, eg. 'posteljina' (bed linen). I think I ought to put it into Memrise so that I can practise it. Chapter 7 covers numbers, but its nowhere near as good as the coverage of that theme in 'Beginners' Croatian'. Chapter 8 has lots of useful food vocab in it (although no cherries!). I did some of the exercises, though not all of them because I find it a bit demotivating when the answers aren't at the back. Friday was a pretty manic day so all I did was some Memrise when I was eventually on the train home. Today I went shopping in town and sat in a coffee shop for an hour while I worked through chapter 7 in 'Beginners' Croatian'. This was a nice easy chapter, which covers dative and locative case endings. There is a useful explanation of the sort of words which take 'u' versus the sort of words that take 'na' with plenty of examples; the teacher from my Croatian class would have done well to read it before she unsuccessfully tried to teach this last term! I did write out all the exercises by hand. A not very intelligent man saw me writing something 'foreign', concluded I must be Polish and suggested I might like to go back to where I came from and stop taking his jobs. It's nice to live in such a tolerant society! In other news I have treated myself to two new Hladno Pivo songs on iTunes: 'Ezoterija' and 'Pravo ja'. I think the lyrics to both are really funny, but I struggled with one of the lines towards the end of 'Pravo ja', which goes 'što ako nosi rajf'. I looked up 'rajf' in my dictionary and the definition was 'barrette'. That's the first time I've ever heard the word 'barrette', but having googled it I think it's an American word for some sort of hair clip. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

I tried to watch my weekly instalment of Croatian news on Deutsche Welle this
afternoon, but I think my internet was being throttled because I couldn't get more than 5 minutes into it. That was just enough to get through the first item, which was about Bosnian nurses working in Germany. I gave up in the end and worked through the exercises in chapter 8 of 'Beginners' Croatian'. This mainly deals with the instrumental case and the exercises on that were quite easy. The only bits I struggled with dealt with practising negation, eg. 'ni s kim'. This evening I finished reading 'Through another Europe'. As with any anthology, some of the extracts were really really good... and some weren't. Particularly intriguing were a couple of bits from Rebecca West's 'Black Lamb and Grey Falcon'. I received a copy of this for Christmas but have been trying to restrain myself from reading it until I'm working locally for a prolonged period of time, because it's far too big to pack and take with me. This morning on the train to work I read through chapters 9 and 10 of 'Colloquial
Croatian', which deal with the instrumental case and the past tense. This evening I was able to attend my Croatian lesson for the first time in about six weeks. Luckily I don't think I missed much. Only one other person turned up, so I think I'm not the only one who has found the teaching frustrating. Today the teacher decided that she was going to teach us about buying tickets, which was a reasonable theme. Unfortunately, in order to do this, she chose to go through chapter 11 of 'Teach Yourself Croatian' which, although the title of the chapter does read 'Povratne Karte', is actually the chapter which teaches the past tense. When she realised she got rather flustered and said that we could ignore the past tense, as "that would be a higher level". Oh dear. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

It is very frustrating. And quite difficult to "ignore" the past tense! I appreciate
that she probably didn't want to teach it because it wouldn't be on the syllabus for what is effectively an entry-level course, but a single advance glance at chapter 11 of TYC would have been enough to show her that it was about the past tense. Grrr! **** Today I rediscovered the audio from 'Colloquial Croatian' on my iPod and listened to the first 30 minutes of it on the way to work. Although I think some of the dialogues in the early chapters of the book are too complicated for complete beginners to follow, once you've completed the book they are probably quite useful. I had to work this evening so didn't achieve a lot more, except 75 words watered on Memrise. I really need to plant some more vocab on Memrise as I think I've pretty much mastered the words I have so far. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

I read two chapters of 'Colloquial Croatian' on the way to work this morning:
- Chapter 11, which deals with personal pronouns. - Chapter 12, which introduces the future tense. From memory, I think that chapter 11 might be where I lost the will to live and gave up when I was writing out the exercises in the book last summer. I should probably restart from there at some point. The battery in my Kindle had died by the evening so I spent the journey home on Memrise instead. Having input all the vocabulary from 'Teach Yourself Croatian' now I finally started planting it today and have currently got to the end of E (127 words). 1 person has voted this message useful | |

I didn't have very much free time today so I concentrated on Memrise. I got as far as
planting the vocabulary up to the end of G from my 'Teach Yourself Croatian' course, but for some reason the levels/letters after that won't load on the app on my phone. I'm getting a message saying that multimedia isn't compatible with the app, but not sure what that means because I definitely haven't added any multimedia.
