Readers Mine,

I'm going to have to focus on Italian for the next little while. If I think I can do it I will continue with my Spanish, if not I might see how I go with German. But Italian is going to be a priority until I feel comfortable with it again. I'm going to 8 week challenge it. Cos I can. This doesn't mean I'm dropping out of the TAC. Rather adding another language to the mix.

I'll keep updating this log for TAC purposes, which will probably slow down while I focus on the 8WC of Italian which I gave it's proper log.

Thom.

Yargh Me Hearties, I've not been done out of this TAC yet.

French: An oldy but a goody. I remember saying that I was working on my accent, I have made myself a lier. Have managed to boost up the speed in which I read in French to a relatively decent level when not reading absurdly difficult literature. Have finished Je m'en vais by Jean Echenoz, and I am not sure if I've written about it in this log yet. Nearly finished Les Champs d'Honneur by Jean Rouaud, but well I went away for the weekend, down to Carry-la-rouet to go to the beach and visit some friends. So I haven't been the most studious person this last little while.

Spanish: Been reading here and there, mostly newspapers, nothing overly interesting nor important. Letting this language mature is an interesting experience. Not having any trouble with it at the level it is (whatever that may be). Had a fair number of email exchanges with hotels and hostels in Spain, and read a bunch of tourism websites as well.

Italian: Finished MT Italian foundation course, Powering through Pimsleur, and enjoying listening to Italian again.

German: Not much really, it's the neglected child of this Tack. I guess I am just a Romanc(tic)e man at heart.

Russian: Flirted with the cold beauty that is Russian before returning to my Italian mistress. Just a bit of the alphabet and a look through the Assimil ('51, and sans peine versions).

I'm becoming less and less inclined to post, be it log, 8WC or blog. So I think I will go back to using just this log. It simplifies things.

That said if anyone wants to Skype, send me a PM and I'll add you.

Yours,
Thom.

Readers Mine,

Rejoice for the Administrator has returned, and on top of that, you get an update.

Spanish: Well I'm going to Spain (Catalunya but you know, close enough) tomorrow night, for a week of beaches, which means plenty of reading time for me. Stocking up my ebook reader as we speak. I also found 'Spanish Vocab an Etymological approach' and have become interested in it, my thoughts about it can be found here.

Italian: Some more Pimsleur, though slowing down. But I am taking the bus to Spain, so I'll have many an hour to absorb the course. Though I suspect that while I'm there I'll work on Spanish...maybe even some Catalan, depending on what happens. I could also just spend the whole time sunbathing and reading, but who knows. Passive comprehension is getting better and better. Still haven't really produced anything. Might start lang8ing in Italian as well. Dunno yet.

French: Erhm, yeah. I'll finish one of my books soon. And probably start another. Was told over the weekend that sometimes I say the most amazingly impressive things, and other times I flub the subjunctive. So, some revision of the subjunctive/more of an effort for the little things. I'm starting to try to get some more flowery phrases coming out of my mouth. I'm regretting not copying my French-English Engineering glossary that I found at work as a .pdf to my personal comp. As I could do with a brushing up in that section of my French vocab.

Thom.

Readers Mine,

This is your favourite (you know I am) moderator updating his super journal with not much.

As you are all no doubt aware, I went to Spain for the last week, well Catalonia but you know they speak some Spanish there too. I took a break from everything that I normally do, which means I didn't touch a computer, learn any languages, study, or anything while I was there. So I spent my time tanning on the beach, or eating.

I did cave in and read 50 pages of El Color de la Magia on the beach, but well no one is perfect right? Oh and I read one of the free newspapers in Catalan. No problems with the written language, aside from some vocab which is extremely Catalan and yeah. Just had a good relaxing time. Spoke a bit of Spanish with bus drivers, hotel receptionists and this little old lady which ran the pension we stayed in in St Feliu de Guixols.

One particular thing that I remember was lying in bed waiting to fall asleep as the afore mentioned old lady and her husband spoke long into the night in the courtroom underneath our window. I love that oh so removed feeling of just soaking in a language you can't understand (really I can't understand the spoken part of Catalan) while you sit there and marvel at the fact that a year or so ago you didn't even know this language existed. I found Sant Feliu de Guixols to be a very cool little town, and the distinct supremacy of Catalan was nice. It was also much less touristy than Barcelona, and the Beaches of la Costa Brava are cool as. I'm also thinking that I need to learn a minority language one day. Might be Catalan, might not be but everyone should play their part in keeping things alive and strong and for some reason Catalunya reminds me of home. It's probably the heat, beaches, and mountains.

Since I got back (yesterday afternoon) I have watched a bit of Spanish TV, and played around as a moderator, and caught up on some sleep. I expect to get back into gear this week, as I've got that itchy language learning feeling in the back of my brain.

Thom.

Yeah, thumbs up on the Catalan idea. Go for it! It's a lovely language, has quite a distinctive sound (and I mean that in the good way), some delightful sounds to harass your tongue about, and they will be really appreciative of your efforts to understand their language and culture. I'm as biased as they come of course, having lived with Catalans and all that, but it's quite a charming language. And I have been warned that a Catalan world take-over is imminent, so best get started on that now, so you're covered on the linguistic side of things.

Ciao OCCASVS e Lizzern,

Voi sapete che voglio imparare a parlare alcuni lingue perché noi chattiamo molto (occasvs) :p. No so se la catalana sera la lingua, ma forse. E possibile. Comunque ho abbastanza cosi de studiare prima de cominciare una altra lingua.

I'll get around to it one day...

*I just did a bit of a translation of a quote in English to french. You can find it here if you're interested.
