I do too - British literature is fantastic!
Well, it is definitely a challenge, but I think recreation is important for a healthy life, so I make an effort to find time. I can normally manage at least 15 minutes a day. . . . Of course, often my language studies take up my free time, but I try to make sure I'm doing fun things not related to languages. Anyway, I am lucky because I usually enjoy the books I have to read for school. Right now, for instance, my assignment for English is to read Emma by Jane Austen, which is one of my favorite books. :) Earlier this year my teacher assigned Ivanhoe and some Shakespeare and I was thrilled! 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

Happy New Year, everyone! Time for my first study update of the year! :)
SPANISH 3 hours - 1 hour 30 minutes of reading - 1 hour 30 minutes of vocabulary acquisition Flashcard Count: 4,876 cards Next week (or maybe the week after that) I will return to picking an author of the week, but for right now I am enjoying my Christmas present: La Emperatriz de Los Etéreos by Laura Gallego García. Last week I read 65 pages, so with the 41 pages I read last night I am on page 106! This morning I spent an hour and a half looking up new vocabulary and some new phrases (for example, "mejor que mejor" and "por descontado") which I had written down while reading. I should probably mention that it does not normally take me over 2 minutes to read one page in Spanish. I'm not sure why I took so long last night . . . perhaps because I was looking up unfamiliar vocabulary and writing it down to learn later as I went, or perhaps because my little siblings and cousins kept on running in and out of the room playing hide-and-go-seek. I didn't mind the distraction - I used to like a game of hide-and- go-seek myself - but all the screaming probably did slow down my reading. This book is not as hard as I was anticipating, though. I enjoy teen fantasy/fiction (Harry Potter etc.) so I was pleased to find a Spanish author in the same genre, but I think my Spanish is getting too advanced for teen novels. I will still learn a lot from reading the book, make no mistake, but I need to buy some harder literature soon. :) NOTES 1. I did the hour and a half of reading yesterday evening, so it doesn't technically count as 2013 study time, but I don't have anywhere else to mention it, and it was good study time. 2. I have three Spanish decks in Anki: one for vocabulary words, one for less useful vocabulary words, and one for sentences, phrases, idioms, etc. My "Flashcard Count" only includes the cards in the first deck. Furthermore, there are some words that are so ingrained in my memory that I never entered them into Anki (hombre, mujer, perro, casa - you get the point); and I also tend to put related words on the same card. For example, "jerarquía" and "jerárquico" share a card. The point of all this rambling is that my Flashcard Count, while giving a ballpark figure for the amount of Spanish words I know, is at least several hundred words too low. El idioma principal de este log será el inglés, ya que pertenezco a dos equipos y sé que todos mis
compañeros de equipo no hablan las mismas lenguas que yo. ¡Que nadie esté privado del entendimiento de una de mis actualizaciones fascinantes! ; ) Entonces o escribo los mensajes importantes en inglés o pongo una traducción para que la gente los lea en inglés. Llevo unos meses sin escribir nada en español menos unos mensajes cortos, entonces me hace falta remediar esta situación. No quiero que la poca destreza que tengo se esfume por la negligencia. Me he estado preguntando de que debo escribir y por fin se me ha ocurrido un tema apropiado - mis planes a largo plazo para estudiar los idiomas! Como siempre, agradezco muchísimo todas correcciones, aún las más chiquititas. No tengan miedo a que me ofendan por ser demasiados detallistas. Sé que mi español necesita mucho refinamiento y aprecio cualquier ayuda, que sea gramática, ortográfica, estilística, o relacionada a la puntuación. :) MIS PLANES PARA EL ESTUDIO DE LOS IDIOMAS A LARGO PLAZO Me encantan los idiomas (¡qué sorpresa!) y supongo que voy a ir aprendiendo más y más por toda la vida. Por lo general estudio las lenguas que me dan la gana y no pienso dejar esta costumbre, pero también tengo una lista ideal de idiomas para aprender. Tengo dos objetivos generales: 1) aprender todos los idiomas de mis antepasados y 2) aprender por lo menos un idioma de todas las ramas principales de la familia indoeuropea. Estos objetivos necesitan un poco de clarificación, por lo tanto he dedicado un párrafo de explicaciones a cada uno. Primero, es imposible averiguar cuáles eran los idiomas de todos mis antepasados. De niña me interesaba la genealogía, pues voy a basar mi lista de idiomas en lo que descubrí de mi historia familiar en aquello período. Mis antepasados emigraron a los Estados Unidos de Polonia, Irlanda, Inglaterra, Escocia, y Alemania. También tengo raíces francesas - hace muchísimos años una francesa se casó con un alemán y de ahí mi sangre francesa. Esto significa que la lista incluye el irlandés, el gaélico escocés, el alemán, el francés, el polaco y el inglés. Esta lista ya me ofrece idiomas de las lenguas germánicas, romances, eslavas, y célticas. Voy a empezar el griego anciano en agosto, que cumplirá el requisito para una lengua griega. Entonces me quedan una lengua báltica, una lengua indo-irania, el albanés, y el armenio. (He pasado por alto unas ramas insignificantes para mí, las lenguas tocarias y anatolias.) Probablemente elegiré finlandés y hindi, porque en el pasado me interesaban mucho estos idiomas, pero nunca se sabe lo que se va a ocurrir. :) Para resumir, mi lista de idiomas contiene el irlandés, el gaélico escocés, el alemán, el francés, el finlandés, el hindi, el albanés, el armenio, y el griego anciano. ¡Sólo nueve idiomas! Debo mencionar que no tengo intención de hablar la mayoría de estas lenguas con soltura - solo quiero familiarizarme con ellas. También hay que admitir que éste es mi plan ideal y que no me lo propongo enteramente en serio. Como ven de los idiomas que estudio ahorita, he elegido mis idiomas teniendo en cuenta mi interés en cada uno y otras cosas prácticas, no mis objetivos a largo plazo. P.ej. el español y el Italiano no figuran en mi lista, pero no voy a dejar de aprenderlos por eso. ¡No creo que esto cambie en el próximo futuro! Me gustan los objetivos, pero me gusta más disfrutar de aprender las lenguas. ¡Espero que les haya interesado este resumen corto de mis planes (hipotéticos) y que no me consideren loca! ; ) 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

Wow, you are ambitious. The number of languages doesn't scare me, but to have them be from all the different languages families with so little overlap.. This is probably one of the only places I could say I want to learn another nine languages and not be considered crazy! So many of the forum members already are learning nine + languages that it almost seems normal. Anyway, these aren't so much my real plans as my wishful thinking - although if I live long enough, I may get around to learning all the languages I listed. :) STUDY UPDATE Not much to mention except flashcard review (in Polish, Spanish, and Latin) and flashcard organization (Polish). Creo que "todas las correcciones" es como un nativo 'normal' lo diría. Mientras que sin el articulo suenas más como Jorge Ramos en Noticiero Univisión. Que por supuesto es correcto, pero todo depende de como quieras ser percibida :) En la segunda oración es demasiado, no demasiados. No se porque, debe de ser alguna excepción a la regla o algo por el estilo. Detallistas tiene sentido en la manera que la estás usando, pero nunca he oído una persona de Latino America usandola así. Generalmente detallista significa una persona que tiene muchos detalles, que se recuerda de los cumpleaños, que te manda flores cuando estás en el hospital, etc. Tambien significa retailer. Pero si hablas el Español de España, no me hagas caso, porque de ese no sé ni papa. Solo nueve idiomas? Y por qué tan poquitos? ;) Ya se te olvidó lo que Nebun significa?? @JohannaNYC, ¡muchas gracias por tus comentarios! Me resultan muy útiles. :) Quizás debe ser "demasiado" y no "demasiados" porque en este caso no me hace falta un adjetivo, sino que un adverbio, y los adverbios no cambian para expresar el género y el número. Me confundí porque la misma palabra puede ser tanto adjetivo como adverbio. Gracias por decirme - espero no cometer el mismo error en el futuro! Aprendo el español de Latinoamérica, no el de España, entonces como me dices que la forma de que usé "detallistas" no te suena bien, no vuelvo a emplear la palabra así. ¿Cuál sería una sustitución apropiada? ¿Minuciosos? ¿Meticulosos? Me extraño mucho de que no haya habido ningún otro error en lo que escribí, pero me hace muy feliz. ¡Ojalá empiece a escribir mejor en español! :) Con respecto a la locura - probablemente ya llevo unos años siendo un poco loca por los idiomas. ¡Nueve no es mi límite! Desde luego que no! :) ¡Ojalá me esperen muchos años en los que mis otras obligaciones, y mis otros intereses, me permitan tener tiempo para muchísimas lenguas!
