I will be mostly studying German!
I don't think there is a solely learn German team so if that's the case I'm happy to go
it alone.
I'm not sure which level I'm at or what level I want to aim for. I'm bad. Shoot me. |

you can check out the CEFR scale if you're interested. or you can just go to editing your German profile and read the descriptions:)
as far as I can tell by your profile and posts, you seem to be at high intermediate/basic fluency.
you don't have to set your goals in the terms of CEFR or this forum's scale, though. for example, my goal for Portuguese and Italian is what i'd call writing basic fluency, that is, knowing the morphology and syntax well and being able to write without a grammar book and without thinking about each sentence (preferably using a dictionary as little as possible), though probably making occasional errors here and there. it's best if you do set more specific goals than just "improving my German".

By the way, is there going to be a list of all the TAC 2012 logs? Or do you think it wouldn't be useful? |
|
|
That's an excellent idea! Sometime in January after the TAC teams are finalized and the individual logs are started, we could use a reference list with links.

May I suggest that either the first post of this thread be edited and the list added there, or a new thread made with the list as the first post? If the list is placed in the middle of this thread, we'll never find it later.

High intermediate to basic fluency sounds about right. I have flirted with the idea of
doing one of the CEFR tests to see where exactly I stand but cost.
At this moment I have no one year goal for German or the TAC. I find no need to do so
as it would feel forced. I have a short term goal of improving and working actively on
my writen German (March) and then my spoken German (June). After this stage I'll re-
assess what my weaknesses are set new goals. My long term goal is ultimately fluency in
German as I would define, personally for me, a passed C2 German exam but also a general
feeling of relative comfort when engaging in German.

Language(s) you plan to study: Mandarin Chinese, Portuguese (Brazil)
Your current level(s): Mandarin Chinese - advanced beginner; Portuguese - probably also an advanced beginner (I've studied it before, but I haven't in a while, so I've forgotten a lot)
Your goals for the challenge: Hope to be a basic intermediate in Chinese at least by the end of the summer (August) -- such that I can carry on basic conversations with ease. For Portuguese, I hope to reach a high intermediate level so that I can participate in most day-to-day situations (by September or so).
Whether you would like to be on a team or an individual participant: Either is fine.

Hello all! I haven't been on the forum in a while, mainly because of school, but I think I can come back for the
TAC 2012, mostly to document my final push for German and preparation for the TestDaF in the spring.
Some changes I made:
Adding Spanish: I've decided to take AP Spanish next year. I haven't learned Spanish in school for a while,
although to me that means absolutely nothing, because I've learned more Spanish as a child speaking with
South American friends than I learned in middle school. I will mostly try to improve my writing, seeing as how
most of my Spanish is informal, spoken Spanish. I have Practice Makes Perfect: Complete Spanish Grammar,
as well as Mastering Spanish Vocabulary. I've found a fantastic bookstore in New York that has volumes of
Spanish and Latin American literature, so I hope to read. I've decided that I once again like Spanish, so my
learning won't just be for the class next year, but for my own personal fulfillment. I've missed Spanish, and I
can't wait to speak it again.
Dropping all other languages except Ancient Greek, German, and Russian: I've decided that Polish is no
longer relevant to my life. My relationship with my Polish relatives has dwindled due to conflict, and I don't
really see the need to please my grandmother, or learn the language of a country which I don't intend to visit
anytime soon. I will perhaps revisit it in the future, however probably not until after I graduate high school. I
do not know whether or not I'll be studying Norwegian. I really love speaking it, however I need to find better
resources that accommodate my style of learning. I'll try and make a decision before the end of the year,
however I might replace it with Indonesian instead. Depends on how I feel. ^_^
So here are my languages:
German
Current Level: High B2, Low C1 (low-mid B2 in writing)
Goal Level: High C1/Writing Low C1 (Good enough to get a 4 on all parts of the TestDaF in the spring)
Plan of Attack: I need to take the TestDaF in the spring, so I will most likely cover my progress for that. I
also intend to continue using my vocabulary book "Mastering German Vocabulary", and use "Practice Makes
Perfect: Complete German Grammar" as well as "German Grammar Drills" and "Hammer's Mastering German
Grammar" in order to review grammatical concepts (my actual learning level is of course much higher than
these materials, other than Hammer's, but extra practice never hurt). I'm also going to be reading a multitude
of materials, as I have been doing for my 5th year German course at my high school. I will be using audio
books in tandem with my reading materials, as I have been doing for Harry Potter 1 in German (rereading it :).
I want to be like a vacuum cleaner with vocabulary. I want enter as much vocabulary as possible in my
continuously growing Anki, which I've been maintaining for quite a while. After the spring it will mostly just
be reviewing Anki, reading, watching movies, and generally just keeping my studies to a fun "recreational"
level.
Russian
Current Level: Low B1
Goal Level: High B2
Plan of Attack: My Russian has fallen greatly, as I've not been devoting time to it due to school. I shall
cover the Princeton Russian Course, while hopefully using some of the grammar books I asked for for
Christmas and Chanukkah. I'm going to be starting at Lesson 19 in Princeton Russian (I got up to about
Lesson 30, but I feel like it's all gone on me now). I'd like to be done with PRC I by the time the summer starts
I want to study Russian when I go to university so I want to be prepared to test into a higher level course.
Spanish
Current Level: Low B1
Goal Level: High B2
Plan of Attack: I plan on using Practice Makes Perfect Complete Spanish Grammar, completing it in a
timely manner so I can begin reading. My main problem with Spanish is, like German, my lack of vocabulary. I
hope to complete Mastering Spanish Vocabulary within a timely fashion in order to establish a solid base with
which I can use to start reading by the time my summer vacation begins.
Despite the fact that German will be my main focus for the first few months (until I take the TestDaF), I'd like
to join the Russian Team, seeing as how Russian will be my focus after German settles down. The Romance +
Slavic team also seems tempting, but most of the other Russian team members have German listed, so I'm
just have to go with that :).
YAY!

I'd be interested in signing up. I am still not quite sure what TAC consists of, but
better to study in a team than alone, eh?
GOALS:
Russian: read articles on Pravda.ru fairly easily
Increase spoken comprehension of Russian (be able to understand Russian Sherlock Holmes
films without subtitles AND be able to transcribe the audio)
Finish Russian book I am currently reading AND finish reading the anthology of
Chekohv's plays
Swedish (?): Finish the grammar-reader.
All other languages will be for fun, as I intend to put all my efforts into Russian and
Swedish. Still, doesn't mean I can't play around with Yoruba, Hindi, Mandarin, and for
the next two weeks Creole and I are gonna get down.

Hello! I'm interested in joining the Russian team.
My main languages will be Russian and German. I'll probably add other languages, but I'm not very sure which ones. (Maybe Swedish, Norwegian or Finnish, just for fun)
Russian
I've tried to learn it before, but I forgot a lot of what I've learnt.
Goal: Low A1 to High A2. I guess it's not very ambitious, is it? I think it's fine.
German
Last semester I signed up for a Basic course at University. I didn't like the teaching but I could learn something.
Goal: Mid A1 to High A2.
