Dear friends, countrymen, and fellow language maniacs!
We now have - the 6 weeks' challenge - the small challenges thread - the Tadoku challenge And I now propose to you: THE SUPER CHALLENGE! - 1 language - 100 films - 100 books - in 20 months I got the idea from a question I got the other day, when I was ecstatic about having finished my first real book in Russian, and was asked whether I felt comfortable reading in Russian now. I answered that I probably needed to read at least 100 books in Russian before I was comfortable reading in it. And right there, right then, I decided that I am going to do just that. I will read 100 books in Russian. Since I also want to develop my listening skills, I decided to add 100 films in Russian. However since 20 months is a long time, and I see that I am a lot more competitive than I knew, I decided that I'd see if there was anyone else out there who would be mad enough to join me. You may think that "Hey I am not good enough, I can't read a book, and I do not understand enough of my target language to see a film in it", but do not worry. I have thought of that. You may also think "I do not have 100 books or films" - but do not worry. I have thought of that too:-) If you are a beginner, you can start with the films. And it counts even if you see it with subtitles in your own language, or even if you see the film in your own language but with TL subtitles. If you start out with the 100 films this year, I am sure you will be able to do the 100 books next year. If you just have 5 books and 5 films then your read them 20 times. Though my guess is that by the time you have read/seen them 5 times, you WILL get other films or books. So the rules would be the following: - Every film counts as long as they have at least voice or subtitles in the TL - If it lasts less than 45 minutes (a show/series) it counts as half a film. If it lasts for more than three hours it counts as two films. - If you want to use podcasts or audiobooks, 1 hour an a half is the equivalence of 1 film. - Every book counts. If it is less than a 100 pages, it counts as half a book. If it is more than 500 pages it counts as two books. - You can see the same films/read the same books again and again - You can be at a B1 maximum when the challenge starts - The challenge starts on May 1st 2012 and ends on December 31st 2013, and can be counted and done in paralell with both the 6WC and the Tadoku challenge (so if you participate in all three you could count the same book three times :-) If you want to join later, you are welcome. You may think it is unfair that someone who reads an easy reader of 101 pages, can count it as just as much as you who read one of 490 pages. But then you should think of how much more you learn! And you may also think it is unfair that someone can see a film in their own language, with just TL subtitles, and it will count as much as you who see it in your TL without subtitles. But again - you will learn so much more! So is there anyone else out there crazy enough to join me, or do I do it alone? I'd like to do this! I love challenges! After thinking it over I've decided to pick Turkish. I'm a complete beginner (I've only done about 5 lessons of Assimil) and so I can't read it at all, but that won't stop me. Most of my DVDs have a Turkish speech option so I'm covered as far as films are concerned.
Finding books might be challenging, although my local library has "some" books in Turkish. I'll look into that this week!

Great! Then we are at least two! And of course it is true for you. Have you ever heard on anyone reading 100 books in a language they didn't master?

Hopefully I'll be doing some actual reading and not just looking at those words, he-he. The good news is I can get at least one children's book of "Kipper the Dog" Kipper'ın Oyuncakları at my library. Kipper and I are set for May! :)

Count me in! I have a bunch of languages I could enter with but since it is still my main

This would be very very interesting, but I have to decide which language to use - that means it will probably be Russian.
