Friday May 7
Spanish - Finished reading "La Ciudad de las Bestias", read a few shorts stories which were too hard for me for the moment, and started "El Reino del Dragon de Oro" by Isabel Allende. For the moment I'm finding it much easier than when I started "La Ciudad...", so I guess I'm getting better. Or maybe I'm just getting used to this particular series of this particular author. Anyway, I'm pretty comfortable reading it, it doesn't feel too much like studying and yet I do see one or two new words a page, so I'm learning something. English None. I really have to get into it again, but I just haven't been online and I didn't feel like turning on my computer. I did however buy notebooks to write down vocabulary and summaries. (For English I won't count anything that I do everyday, like talk, read, teach my courses... Only what actually requires effort on my part like translation, or teaches me new words, like reading medical articles. Russian Wrote a little text about my day when I was at work, in between actual courses. Saturday, May 8th
Spanish - Read about 100 pages of "El Reino del dragon de oro" Russian - Answered a message, talking about myself a bit... - Also tried to read a novel By Tchekov (Cpat xochetsia). I read about two pages before giving up. I still have a lot to learn before I'm able to read literature. English - Translated and wrote down lots of medical specialties in English and French. I already knew most of them and the others were more cultural/institutional differences than linguistic ones, which means I wasn't able to translate some of them. It was pretty dry, next time I'll just read random articles and look up the vocab, at least I'll actually learn something... May 14th
Bad, bad girl. I have done absolutely NOTHING since last time I wrote in here. OK, maybe I did a little bit of translation, but it was mostly rereading and correcting a few things. My English is slowly but surely turning to sand (lately I've been doing simple past/ present perfect and do/make mistakes, plus other really bad ones like that, plus my oral comprehension isn't what it used to be, especially for British English), I had lost 'El Reino des Dragon de Oro" for a while and just found it again, so no Spanish, and I don't really know what to do in Russian now that I've given up on the Princeton course - I guess I wasn't Princeton material after all, but it felt good while it lasted -. I could have talked to my Russian buddies on Skype but now I'm not learning it formally anymore, I feel self-conscious because they are still learning French/ English and therefore progressing way faster than I am. Although taking a break has helped organise what little I really know, and I can make my own sentences, explain pretty much everything in my daily life.Basically, if you're really, really patient you can have a conversation with me. I'm more or less able to use cases and tenses even if I still make a few mistakes... And yet it's still fully a foreign language to me, mainly because I lack vocabulary so badly. I might go to LingQ a bit, see if I can learn some daily life vocab and sentences, get to the next step in my learning process (I still LingQ is useless for beginners and there are more interesting things to do if you're fluent, but for intermediary learning it's a good way of expanding our vocabulary. I may have been a bit harsh with it. So I'll give it a try for Russian, which just doesn't have enough cognates for me to learn it without help) Wow, I was just going to apologise for not studying, but I got to rambling and now I feel really motivated! This TAC log thing is really helping! Anyway, team mates and other TACists, good luck with your studies, I'm hoping to read more about you, etc, etc... Have a great TAC May! PS: Pretty sure my computer will give up the ghost soon, I'm worried: what will I do for everything but Spanish when that happens? ( It's taking me 7 minutes to scrool down a page on facebook, 2 minutes to load a Word document, 5 to load an internet page, and the little light things for caps just sank under the keyboard so now I don't now if I'm writing in CAPS or not. OK, despite what I said last time, I haven't gone back to studying at all. In fact I haven't even read any Spanish. I guess that I feel like I should be doing English instead, but don't really want to, so I just don't do anything. I've really wanted to chat with my Russian Skype pals too, but I'm feeling really self-conscious about my linguistic abilities right now so I just couldn't bring myself to do it. Plus my computer is getting more and more annoying to use.

Il me semble que tu t'es épuisée. Il n'est pas toujours facile de trouver l'équilibre entre l'engagement est le surmenage, je le sais bien. Prends des vacances de l'étude sans avoir mauvaise conscience. Peut-être ton cerveau veut te dire qu'il a besoin d'un peu de temps pour réarranger les choses que tu as appris. Tu es en train de perdre la joie d'apprentisage. C'est un signe que l'on ne doit pas ignorer. Occupe-toi des choses qui te font plaisir pour te récréer. Tu n'est pas un ordinateur.

Merci pour vos messages. Dans mon cas je pense que c'est plutôt que j'ai atteint les niveaux B en Russe et donc ça fait un peu peur de se lancer là-dedans. Je ne suis pas assez bonne pour lire et comprendre des documents authentiques, j'arrive à peine a naviguer sur les sites Russes, surtout parce qu'il y a beaucoup de mots empruntés au français et à l'anglais. Et d'un autre côté j'ai dépassé le niveau d'apprendre des dialogues par coeur. Enfin, c'est la langue la moins transparent que j'aie jamais apprise et donc il semble que cette phase difficile va s'étendre même dans les niveaux C du CECR, ce qui me fait franchement peur. Donc pour l'instant je ne sais pas par quel bout prendre mon apprentissage du Russe.
Quant à l'espagnol, je lis un peu mais je ne force pas non plus. J'essaie de ne lire que pour le plaisir, donc ça me donne l'impression d'avoir intégré l'espagnol aux langues que je "parle" même si en réalité je le comprend dans certains contextes seulement, ou dans cette série de livres d'Isabel Allende que je suis en train de lire. Mais ça fait du bien! En ce moment je regarde aussi des dessins animés japonais, sous-titrés bien sûr (Trigun) et j'essaie de mémoriser certains mots. Pour l'instant: Nanda yo! (not sure about which are words and of course I can't write in any form of Japanese writing): What the hell? soro soro or suru suru; right now, soon sensei: master, teacher but also doctor sempai: boss, madam domo/domo arigato: thanks, apparently even without "arigato' one wa: lower register for "watashi wa"? (I, subject) okasa: mother (father is something close but can't remember it) odacha 'or something closish): grandmother shin: death shi: blood bakara(n?): jerk, idiot gomenasai: sorry itch(i)/shtotz, neh, san: 1,2,3 (already knew those, as well as conitchiwah, conbanuah, plus the morning one that I don't remember but understand, hai, iya, arigato, arigato gosaimas/gosaimasta, watashi wa) -san: when adressing someone (respectful) -chan: when adressing someone (cute? I'm not sure about this) des/deska: some form of question marker? Nan deska: What is this? Doshde/dushde/doshte: why nani oshi teru: I remember hearing that a lot, but can't remember the context. What does it mean? - What are you doing? What's happening? Thank all I can think of right now. It's kind of fun trying to decrypt a completely unknown language. Probably won't go very far like that but I like the mind game. Plus anime tends to be really slow so it's something else to do at the same time. I also try to repeat the shorter sentences in my head, hoping something will stick. Oh, and if you speak even a little Japanese, please comment/ correct me!
