Such negativity! You seem to be understating your abilities somewhat and only focusing on the areas in which you have regressed.

I feel obliged to post now because I felt rather similar yesterday after an encounter with a Russian speaker made me realize just how little of my passive vocabulary I could actively use. I can only say cheer up!

What you have learnt will still be there (in some vague shape or form) when you feel up to studying more intensively again. If you need a break enjoy it without guilt and return later when those reasons which first motivated you begin to burn once more.

PS. You are not allowed to ignore Russian completely, as reading your comments on it here has been of great help to me while I slowly struggle with it myself :)

Thanks guys! I wasn't understating my abilities, only saying that I completely stopped working. I know I'm capable of learning new languages, but I need more real-life incentive, I need to need those new languages, and right now I don't. I'm sure I'll get my motivation back at some point, after all, it's the holidays right now!

Hi everyone. With the start of the new school and TV years I started watching Aguila Roja and other Spanish shows again, but I'm afraid I still haven made myself work on Russian. When I think about Russian now, I can see that I'm forgetting a lot of it, but honestly this year I won't be able to put as much work into it as I should, so I figured I'll just get to it whenever I'm done with Spanish ,i.e. whenever I get to a fluent level in active Spanish, which will only happen if I spend a coupld of weeks at least in Spain, and I really don't know when I'll be able to do that. It looks like my studies aren't going to leave me much time for more languages so I'll just keep watching what I like in Spanish and maybe reading a little, but I'm not near a level where I can do that in Russian, so I'll leave it aside for a while.

I think I must have watched each episode of Aguila twice, plus about 5-6 episodes of Redes, so let's say 12 hours of Spanish TV, plus about 2 hours reading random things = 14 hours.

I ordered the last book of the Allende trilogy, El Bosque de los pigmeos, and a Vargas Llosa, La guerra del fin del mundo, in a bilingual edition mostly because it was all they had on Amazon.fr but I mightactualy need it, as it's going to be my big jump into adult literature.
I also found a new site for all sorts of TV channels all around the world:
http://wwitv.com/portal.htm
I haven't used it or even tried to access the individual channels yet, but I'll try it soona and tell you what I think.

Finally, great news: I've had my first case of wanting to say something in Spanish because an exact equivalent doesn't exist (or come to me) either in English or French: I as writing the previous sentence and wanted to say I hadn't yet "aprovechado" that site. So yeah :D. I also feel much better now I've decided to let go of Russian and just have some passive fun with Spanish.

Total:
177 Russian

Ruso: 177 horas
espanol: 160 horas

I was wondering if I should replace Russian with English (and French?). I really thought I was done with those two, but as it turns out I'm now studying medical and health translation, and the medical language is a tongue all of its own, with even cultural elements and everything. Anyway it's a good thing I gave up on Russian for now, because there's no way I would have time to study it and finish my master's degree this year. As for Spanish, I read on the train, so that's all right. I'm going to try to finish "La guerra del fin del mundo" by Christmas, but there's an chance it will last me all the way until March. On its own, that book is as long as everything else I've ever read in Spainsh (more than 900 pages).
