I tried to get it and unfortunately I couldn't get the right application to use it, but I made an Excel version of it (it calculates hours, percents etc. and you can enter in your own languages). It's really helpful, and if you take the chart in which the totals for the year are calculated, you can make a graph just like ellasevia's. This is all, of course, just in case the ODF file doesn't work (like it didn't for me). 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

@Teango: Thanks to you too. You're coming up on your second forum-day in September. Unfortunately I don't think I'll be making any more of those cookies, but some scrumptious cupcakes might be in order. In addition to not being able to imagine life without this forum, I can't imagine this forum without several core members, including the two of you. Anyways, I have more good news! The frigid weather seems to be holding, and tomorrow when I would normally be leaving for school it's projected to be -15°F (-26°C), and with windchill that will feel like -27°F (-33°C). Good job Ellasevia, that's amazing. It's really cool to see people take on several languages like that. Even if you only spent a few hours on some languages, it's still review, and you went over the stuff and kept up with it. Thats really good.

I am not a grammar genius, but I think that after you have learned so many languages, you will be able to make some connections in order to learn the grammar correctly. (New month, new color for the graph. To fit my synaesthetic associations with the month, of course.) Quite a disappointing week, since we even had the equivalent of an extra weekend in it due to school cancellations because of severe weather conditions. Actually, this week has set a record for most idle days – that is, days on which I have done literally nothing. I did no language study at all on Saturday or on Thursday of this past week, shame on me! I’ve also probably set the record for smallest amount of Anki reviews done, with only a bit over 4000 reviews (compared to at least 7000 in previous weeks), and am wallowing in my reviews even more than before with almost 3300 due… I intended to turn this sad performance around tonight by putting in several hours of study, but I got back much later than usual from my grandparents’ house and was simply too tired. As such, I’m also going to be writing only in English this week, except for Russian because I actually wrote something in advance. (Okay, I lied. I’m writing a tiny bit in Romanian too.) I did manage to work on every language this week though…except for German and French. Oh dear, naughty naughty me.  SVENSKA
Total Study Time This Week: 2.75 hours Total Study Time in 2011: 20 hours - Assimil Lessons 45-48 - Swedish Radio Sadly I didn’t spend enough time on Swedish this week to have reached the beginning of the active wave for Assimil, but I WILL reach it in this coming week. I also determined to only inform myself about the goings-on in Egypt via my language studies, so I was listening to lots of radio from Sweden about that. Not that I understood it all, but I got the main ideas I think. On that subject, I realized that I’ve found out about several current events in the past year because of my studies or this forum (I’m something of a recluse and usually shut out everything going on around me). I first heard about the volcanic eruption in Iceland last spring from reading Teango’s log, followed up by reading about it from a Greek newspaper. I only heard about this conflict in Egypt originally from listening to Swedish radio, and several other examples. Somehow I managed to not even hear anything of the earthquake in Haiti last January until a couple days afterward, when it was mentioned in my Spanish class.  فارسى
Total Study Time This Week: 3.75 hours Total Study Time in 2011: 22.25 hours - Spoken World Farsi Lesson 8 (+ BYKI) - Assimil Lessons 31-33 - Listened to the Bible in Persian for background while I studied (I’m just not even going to mention this one anymore for any of my languages because it will be the norm, because I like to listen to something spoken in the language while I study it) Not much to comment on for Persian. I’ve now completed over half of Spoken World Farsi, so I guess that’s news. It took me from the middle of August until sometime in December to finish the first three lessons from that, so it’s exciting that I’ve been able to get through the next five of them in about a month. I haven’t quite worked out the differences between those yet. Or rather, I knew them but have since forgotten.) Where do you live in Romania? My friend lives in Timişoara, which is a big city in Transylvania. If I go to Romania in the summer, I will be there with her, and probably in Bucharest as well, because the train goes from Greece to Bucharest. I still feel like a complete fool while writing in Romanian. It seems similar enough to the other Romance languages that I feel like I shouldn’t have too many problems, but that is unfortunately not the case at all. Total Study Time This Week: 1 hour Total Study Time in 2011: 3.75 hours - Two news articles from Το Βήμα This week I managed to do some Greek by reading two articles from Το Βήμα. The first was a rather long one about the conflict in Egypt and the second was a very short one about an earthquake in India (what is with all these disasters going on in the past year?). I was able to understand a good portion of both, but there were of course many unknown words. After reading both, I set about the task of looking up the new words in the first article but ended up getting extremely bored doing so and quit about halfway through. I don’t see myself using words like ‘watchtower,’ ‘to inundate,’ or ‘to denounce’ anytime soon anyways…  Polski
Total Study Time This Week: 1.75 hours Total Study Time in 2011: 10.5 hours - Spoken World Polish Lessons 0-1 (+ extensive shadowing) - MT Foundation (Beginning of CD8) So I finally began work with the long-awaited Spoken World Polish, and went through the introduction (which I’m calling “lesson 0” since it also had some useful vocab which I learned) and lesson one. I then obsessed over the dialogue for a while, shadowing it over twenty times until I could follow it perfectly, at the correct speed, and with no mistakes. I’m being quite obsessive about my pronunciation lately for all of my languages, because I’ve realized that I have now left the age where acquiring new native-like accents is relatively simple, and now it’s noticeably more work than it was before. I thought that I had always just been good with accents, but now I’m thinking it had more to do with me still being rather young… Anyways, I also worked for a little bit with Michel Thomas, just reviewing some of the past tense forms (byłem, byłam, byłeś, byłaś, był, była, etc.). Total Study Time This Week: 1.75 hours Total Study Time in 2011: 4.25 hours - Cortina Russian Lesson 8 - Cortina Russian Lesson 4 Translation Exercises Я хотел изучать русский в понедельник, но я был очень усталый и ничего не сделал. Так во вторник я сделал упражнения перевода четвёртого урока моей книги, потому что у нас не было школы. Я прочитал также восьмой урок, потому что у меня было много свободного времени. В школе я тоже говорил немного по-русски с таджикской девушкой в моём немецком курсe, чей родной язык русский. Я ещё не говорю хорошо, но теперь мой русский конечно лучший чем когда я начал изучать этот красивый язык в июле, хотя ещё очень простой и плохой. Я люблю славянские языки, и теперь я учусь польскому языку также. I wanted to study Russian on Monday, but I was very tired and didn’t do anything. So on Tuesday I did the translation exercises from the fourth lesson of my book [Cortina], because we didn’t have school. I also read the eighth lesson, because I had lots of free time. At school I also spoke a bit in Russian with the Tajik girl in my German class, whose native language is Russian. I still don’t speak well, but now my Russian is of course much better than when I started to learn this beautiful language in July, although it’s still very simple and bad. I love the Slavic languages, and now I am learning the Polish language as well.  Kiswahili
Total Study Time This Week: 1 hour Total Study Time in 2011: 3.5 hours - Mwana Simba Lessons 36-40 All I did this week for Swahili was review the last few lessons from Mwana Simba which I had done before stopping my studies for the rest of December, plus lesson 40. Most of this was stuff which I knew already (passives, causatives, prepositional verb forms, etc.) but it was good review since these verbal derivations are very important in Swahili. A few examples to spark your interest: PASSIVE: kuua = to kill, kuuwa = to be killed; kufundisha = to teach, kufundishwa = to be taught CAUSATIVE: kula = to eat, kulisha = to feed; kuchemka = to wake up (yourself), kuchemsha = to wake (someone else); tayari = ready, kutayarisha = to prepare PREPOSITIONAL: kufanya = to do/make, kunifanyia = to do/make for me; kuandika = to write, kumwandikia = to write to him/her; kupika = to cook, kukupikia = to cook for you PREPOSITIONAL + PASSIVE: kuzaa = to give birth, kuzalia = to bear [him] a child, kuzaliwa = to be born  日本語
Total Study Time This Week: 1 hours Total Study Time in 2011: 3 hours - Vocabulary - Kanji Reviews (~110) I don’t even remember what vocabulary this was that I did, but I have it down in my spreadsheet that I worked on vocabulary for Japanese this week so it must have happened. After that I decided to work on kanji, but was so annoyed with the huge piles of reviews that I immediately stopped after my watch told me that I had completed an hour of study. :(  Español
This week I watched an episode of El Internado, which was wonderful as always. There’s only one problem… The episode I watched was the second-to-last one, so there’s only one left before I finish all seven series! I was able to refrain from watching this second-to-last episode for over a month, so maybe I’ll be able to refrain from watching until the beginning of March? I really don’t want this show to end, but I desperately want to find out what happens in the end. OTHER To reiterate my complaints from last week, but with the current data... - I’m absolutely drowning in a vicious sea of unrelenting Anki reviews. Currently the program says I have 3285 due and 182 new and I just want to smash my head through a wall thinking about that. We’ll see about catching those up tomorrow. Maybe. I’ve already done over 4000 this week. - And the study numbers keep on climbing! Unfortunately, they are also climbing for my kanji reviews, which I have been largely neglecting for a long time now. Right now I have 808 reviews rotting there, and have reviewed exactly 113 kanji in the past week. Oh dear… I severely underestimated my own laziness and inexplicable fear of large numbers (particularly when relating to vocabulary and kanji reviews) there. I hope I won’t have to quote that statement again with even worse results next week! Where’s my motivation on switch? Seeing that (up until this week) my daily schedule has been working, I’ve decided to create a couple more, because 1) creating schedules and plans of action is really fun to do, and 2) it’s one of the only ways to get myself to reliably work on something because I’ll feel obligated to meet my expectations. I haven’t actually made these yet, but tomorrow I intend to write up plans for: 1. Getting back on track with Anki within this next week. 2. Getting through all these cumbersome kanji reviews shortly, and to begin restudying characters again from where I left off in December. 3. A good sleep schedule!!! (Since my efforts to change my habits this week didn’t seem to work all that well because things kept coming up. Excuses, excuses.) 4. A daily time management plan. The problem with the above is, of course, that it will undoubtedly take me far too long to make those and end of eating away all my study time. In the meantime, I shall be going to bed without even taking another glance at either my Anki or kanji. Gute Nacht! (Because I feel guilty for not having done any German in the past two weeks.) Gerne, Philip. Wenn ich einen Mensch helfe, fühle ich mich besonders gut. Ich bin kein Grammatikgenie, aber ich versuchte, dich die wichtigste Fehler zu erklären. Ich hoffe, dass du alles verstanden hast... Während der letzten zwei Wochen habe ich fast nur Deutsch geübt, und deshalb fühle ich mich schuldig, denn ich sollte für die CAE Prüfung studieren, und ich kann mich zwar keine Anfängerin in Russisch nennen, so wenige sind meine Russischkenntnisse!
Pero no tengo mucho tiempo hasta marzo, cuando va a ser la primera fase de ”Die Deutscholympiade”. He preparado mucho por este concurso, y quieria obtenir un buen resultado. Acum, îți voi vorbi pe română. Tot ce ai scris tu este foarte bine, inclusiv ”locuiește în”. Oricum, ”în vară” trebuia să folosești, și nu ”în vara” pentru că nu spui exact care vară, deci nu necesită articol. Locuiesc în Călan, însă îmi petrec toată ziua în Hunedoara, pentru că acolo merg la școală și acolo sunt aproape toți prietenii mei. Hunedoara și Călan sunt tot în Transilvania, și sunt destul de aproape de Timișoara (3-4 ore cu trenul, cred). Mă bucur că vei veni la vară în România! Și eu aș dori să merg în Grecia, pentru că acolo locuiește o verișoară, în Rhodos, și cred că voi merge la vară cu mama. Din nefericire, deși este hobby-ul meu, nu am posibilitatea de a călători mult! Mult succes în continuare și spor la muncă! 1 person has voted this message useful |
