It hasn't been a very productive week, but it has been a good day. I finally got to the end of 'Три
Мускетара', an abbreviated and simplified children's version of 'The Three Musketeers' in Serbian
Cyrillic. This is the first time I have ever read any kind of book in Cyrillic, and so I feel a little
bit proud :) It was about 225 pages, of which I have counted 75 towards the Super Challenge. The print is
larger than a normal book and there are quite a few pictures, so this felt about right.
I *think* my reading speed is slowly improving. I was trying to assess the speed today and I can read
more or less at the speed of slow reading aloud, stumbling if there is a long word I haven't seen before.
This is still painfully slow but a significant improvement on where I was a few months ago, when I had to
spell out every single word, syllable by syllable. I know that to get better I just need to force myself
to read more!
Serpent shared a
really cool picture of Serbian handwriting with me earlier in the week. I like the way these
letters are written a lot better than the ones I have been trying to copy in my handwriting exercises
because these are more scribbly and less swirly. My handwriting isn't pretty and swirly in English so I
think it's unrealistic to expect it to be like that in Serbian. The style of these letters looks much
more manageable to me :) Interestingly three of the letters (i, p, t) are handwritten differently here
from the exercises I had been copying.
This evening I watched episode two of the second series of 'Budva na pjenu od mora'. There were lots more
nice shots of Žabljak, which I enjoyed. There were also some shots of Podgorica, but although they really
tried they didn't succeed in making it look attractive. I think Podgorica is in need of a Skopje-style
makeover :D I still can't catch all of the dialogue (it depends a lot on who is speaking and how strong
their accent is) but I feel like I am doing better now.

Aww, glad to help :) The ones you posted kinda look more like computer cursive than actual handwritten cursive to me. Kinda like few probably write the a this way in English.

Today hasn't been the most productive of days language-wise, but I have forced myself
to write this week's 350 words. I actually managed nearer 400 :)
This is the uncorrected version. It's about the day I wanted to visit Mount Vodno
outside Skopje but couldn't because of torrential rain.
Quote:
probudila u utorak i gledala kroz prozor. Padala je kiša - i kakva kiša! Engleskinja
neću imati drugu priliku posjetiti planinu Vodno.
kupila karte do Bitole.
Posjetila sam i knjižaru i kupila
Poslije toga sam ušla u kafić i popila kavu.

Unfortunately this week has been even less productive than last week. It's not really
an exaggeration to say that I haven't done anything since Sunday apart from work. I
haven't even managed to do quite simple things I wanted to do like go for a walk or
reply to Facebook messages, and I am completely behind on everyone else's logs.
Hopefully normal service will resume in February :)
I plan to catch up with everything over the weekend, but in the meantime I should post
my corrections from last week's words.

I got corrections from three different people, and a nice comment from one of them:
"Tvoj hrvatski je stvarno odličan! Svaka ti čast, nije mala stvar ovako dobro naučiti
pisati na hrvatskom!"
:)
I'm quite pleased that there weren't too many corrections in that piece. Obviously I'm
still writing on pretty simple themes, but I feel like I am improving in accuracy
already, so I definitely need to keep this up.
I saw a thread from someone over the past week or so (no idea who or where and will
probably never find it in the depths of the forum to comment!) about it taking ages to
get corrections on lang-8. I don't have that problem at all - I think the longest it
has taken me to get a correction is 24 hours, and it's normally significantly less
than that. I'm not very diligent about correcting other people's English, so I think
it's probably because I'm writing in a less popular language and so there aren't many
other people's entries competing with mine to attract corrections from the Croats on
lang-8. I can imagine it's a very different situation with French.

I finished reading "Krpar, krojač, soldat, špijun" today. I learned two things from
this: that I don't like reading John le Carre books and that "fenjerdžija" is the
Serbian word for "lamp-lighter". I'm not sure which knowledge is more useful.
Two more 'books' to read and then I will be up to 200 for the Super Challenge. And
following another episode of 'Budva na pjenu od mora' tonight, only two more films to
go until I reach 100. I am quite enjoying watching 'Budva' now and I feel like it
gives some interesting insights into Montenegrin culture. One of the older characters
today made reference to fighting in Herzegovina during the 1990s, and being involved
in the Montenegrin attack on Dubrovnik. There is a female character who can walk into
a bar, down three rakijas in quick succession and still function as if she is
completely sober. I wish I could do this. There was also a very amusing part when one
character brought his fiancee to his father's house to meet him for the first time.
She brought a few gifts, including a packet of coffee. He gave her instructions as to
how to find the kitchen so that she could make them all a cup :D I guess this might be
what my guidebook to Montenegro meant when it said that some men had a rather
conservative attitude towards women!

I didn't do any work today (yay!) so was able to catch up on quite a bit of stuff.
This morning I read the first 42 pages of 'Чаробњак из Оза' (The Wizard of Oz), which
is my second Serbian children's book in Cyrillic. Having finished a novel yesterday, I
also started reading a new book in the Latin alphabet: 'Krv Bogova' (The Blood of
Gods) by Conn Iggulden. It's the fifth and final book in the series about Caesar that
I started reading back in May.
I devoted some time this afternoon to studying my Macedonian textbook, because I have
made a shamefully poor start with Macedonian so far this year. I spent some time
working on my handwriting as well. My textbook has an example handwritten Macedonian
alphabet and most letters are the same as in the Serbian handwriting that Serpent
linked me to last week. The Macedonian ones are slightly messier if anything, which
suits me fine :)
I had a twinge of guilt about my unwatered Memrise backlog earlier and cleared it down
to zero. That included 80 Macedonian words (I think that's my entire vocabulary right
now!) and about 450 Croatian. I found I had forgotten some animal words through lack
of practice, eg. omčica (ferret). I should practise more often.
This evening I watched another episode of Budva, which included some more cultural
gems and unusual accents. One of the characters kept saying "šutra" for "sutra" and I
heard lots more examples of accents unexpectedly falling on the final syllable of a
word. This episode included some nice shots of Stari Bar, which was pretty cool for me
because I'd been there in the summer, but I'm not sure it's going to do much for the
Montenegrin tourist industry because it was used as the backdrop for the local mafia
beating someone up.
And of course, I have written this week's 350 words. It actually turned out to be
nearer 500 and it's about my visit to Bitola.

U srijedu sam otputovala u Bitolu. Bitola je drugi grad Makedonije i nalazi se
blizu južne granice s Grčkom. Htjela sam posjetiti Bitolu otkad sam pročitala knjigu o
Putovala sam autobusom i malo
otprilike četiri sata dok nisam stigla u Bitolu. Pogledala sam kroz prozor tijekom
cijelom putem i vidjela sam lijep makedonski pejzaž.
Čim sam stigla u Bitolu, krenula sam pješice do hotel zato što sam htjela vidjeti sobu
i tamo ostaviti torbu dok razgledam grad.
Kada sam ušla u stari grad odmah sam ugledala golemi amfiteatar. Vidjela sam
vrtoglavicu.
Nikada nisam vidjela takve lijepe mozaike čak ni u Italiji.

In this case, "pogledala" would mean that you only looked once and stopped looking, while "gledala" would mean that you kept on looking through the window.
"pogledala" is svršeni vid and it is used for actions that are happening "currently" or to signify the beginning or an end of an action.
"gledala" is nesvršeni vid and it denotes an action that is in progress or that is repeated at certain intervals.
I hope you don't mind my corrections. If you want to, I can correct your Serbian texts, if you ever decide to write in Serbian. :)

Thank you nikolic, I am extremely grateful for any corrections I can get :) My main aim for this year is to improve my writing. I know I definitely need to
pay more attention to aspect and cases because I make several mistakes with these every time I write.
I had a few more corrections on lang-8 today, so here is my corrected text:
