In het algemeen ben ik het met je eens. Ik vind het altijd makkelijker om mijn aandacht
op korte taken te richten. Dat is meer praktisch zeg maar. Mijn favoriete lerares op de kunstacademie zei altijd: 'Ik maak me geen zorgen over wat ik in mijn leven wil - ik zorg er alleen voor dat ik weet wat ik in de volgende dertig minuten wil doen' enz. Dus, ja, ik weet het en ik ben het met je eens. Toch zie ik deze gedachten steeds vaker voor mijn geest komen, nu dat ik afgestudeerd ben. Volgens mij begreep ik de wereld helemaal fout toen ik op de kunstacademie zat. Ik wist namelijk niet hoe je dingen voor jezelf krijgt. Kortom - ik moet alles over nadenken. I'm still working on De ontdekking van de hemel, but I've also recently come into
possession of a number of Arnon Grunberg books. So that should keep me busy for a while. One of the new Grunbergs is De azielzoeker, which I've heard really good things about. Ugh. I wish I had four sets of eyes so I could read everything on my bookshelf at the same time. I also might be seeing an opera in French at the end of the month. That'll be cool. I haven't been doing much with French lately, but I know that no matter what I won't have to rely 100% on the subtitles. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Februari is echt een kutmaand wat betreft taal leren. :-P
Gisteren heb ik een verjaardagskaartje aan mijn opa geschreven. Hij wordt 84. Jeetje zeg! Ik hoop dat ik zo helder in mijn hoofd zal zijn als ik 84 ben. Ik kan me dat echt niet voorstellen, dat ik ooit oud zal zijn. Ik zou heel graag voor altijd jong blijven. Maar goed, dat was een leuke oefening. Ik wist eigenlijk niet wat je in een Nederlandstalige kaart moet schrijven... ('Gefeliciteerd met je verjaardag! Ik hoop dat je dit jaar gelukkig en gezond zal blijven!' ... en dan?) Maar ik vind het ook moeilijk om Engelstalige kaarten te schrijven. Dus. Vandaag ben ik gek op dit liedje: De Dijk - Mooier dan nu Ik vind hun andere liedjes niet zo leuk, maar die vind ik mooi. Ik vind verjaardagskaarten schrijven ook best lastig. Vaak wens ik mensen een mooie dag, of zeg ik dat ik deze dag extra aan ze denk. Of dat ik blij ben dat ze er zijn. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Hoi miertje! Ja, uiteindelijk koos ik voor wat meer vriendelijkheid dan wat ik normaal in een brief zou schrijven -
complimenten en zo. Maar ik wou ook niet te over-the-top zijn, weet je? Ah, verjaardagskaarten schrijven... daar kan je niks aan doen... On another note, I just can't resist dropping two more half cheesy, wholly great Dutch tunes into this log: Clouseau - Daar gaat ze Clouseau - Nobelprijs I just discovered this Belgian band from the late '80s/early '90s. They're so delightful. The lyrics in the last one make no sense, because he's like, "These are more than pretty words / You earn the Nobel Prize." Except... those are still just words? verdienen here is not to earn, but "to deserve" or "to merit". Should someone have earned
the prize, then you would say "Jij ontvangt/wint de Nobelprijs". The distinction is subtle, but what he is actually saying is that person is so good that (s)he is worthy of the Nobel Prize - it has nothing to do with handing it out. "Je hebt dat niet verdiend" - "you didn't deserve that!" (both when you take something that is not rightfully yours, but also when you have been wronged and it was unjustified). 1 person has voted this message useful | |

The problem really is that in English "to earn" can be used as a synonym for "to deserve"
in the case of meriting a reward: "Take the medal, you've earned it!" is synonymous with "you deserve it!". In Dutch, you use verdienen for everything, and in the case of a reward, it always means to deserve, and a translation with "earn" in English is very strange, because that only works when talking about the salary you receive. 2 persons have voted this message useful |
