October Challenge
The theme this month is “Architecture and Design”.
I don’t know much about Nordic architecture, apart from recognizing a few iconic buildings in Scandinavia like these:

.

But even an ignoramus like me is aware of the reputation of Scandinavian design with its emphasis on simplicity, functionality and minimalism.

Just like last month, anything goes for the challenge as long as what you report back has something to do with either architecture or design and the Nordic countries. What you write need not be long nor in your TL, though of course that’s encouraged.

And for those who really hate this challenge (and I imagine several do, given the low turn-out for September), I offer you an alternative: let us know what you’ve been up to lately by writing a paragraph with at least 10 sentences in your TL.

I don't hate the challenges! I just assumed it had to be in L2. I guess I'll read something in Swedish and summarize it in English.

Earlier this year someone (was it you, Serpent?) suggested that not all challenges require active production in the TL, as that might be too difficult/discouraging for some team members. So I aimed at mixing it up a little over the months: for the one-week-consistency challenge, for instance, everybody could choose their preferred activity, whether active or passive.

With these latest “culturally-oriented” challenges, I think opting for the use of TL is better left to the single person, according to their proficiency, time available, inclination, etc.

After all, as I think I’ve already written somewhere in this thread, I’m inclined to think of the monthly challenge more as a stimulus to keep in touch with the language and with the team throughout the year rather than a demonstration of one’s progress. Not that I don’t value the latter, but it’s not the whole point for me.

I don’t hate the challenges, either. I’m afraid I just don’t have enough interest in art, poetry and architecture to want to write about them. That’s not something I’m proud of and it certainly doesn’t mean that others wouldn’t find these subjects interesting. Emme, I’m grateful that you care enough about the team to take the trouble to organize these challenges. If you didn’t do it, nobody would. Here’s my TL paragraph:

Yes, it was me :-) I still think it's important, especially for observers. Individual learners tend to focus on reading and writing but there's a lot of variation.
