Back in 2007, I produced a 5-day set of radio programs on Georgian music (we'd do that for several countries), so that allowed me to get to know quite some Georgian artists. I also like the cover versions they made, even from Brazilian songs! I'm no longer active at that radio program but I'm trying to recover the material, even if just the playlist.

So, now comes my first song, a song about the time! I'll add the Georgian lyrics and a Russian translation I found online. I haven't been able to figure out the whole lyrics through the Russian translation, so feel free to make any remarks.

Time for book2, lesson 03.
A) This sentence: რომელ სასტუმროში ცხოვრობთ? In which hotel are you staying? Led me in doubt. Doesn't ცხოვრობ mean to live? How come one uses it for staying at a hotel, which is supposed to be short? Is that usage correct? B) რამდენი ხნით რჩებით? How long will you be staying? Here, ხნით is in which case? what about the verb to say? C) ვწუხვარ, მაგრამ უკვე დავგეგმე რაღაც. I am sorry, but I already have plans. Should read "Sorry, but already on-plan some"? I don't understand the word order, I assume there is a case ending applied to "plan", and "some" comes afterwards. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

As I thought. I just find it a curious usage.
I won't finish Lesson 02 of Hewitt's today. Now I remember what put me off. It's a rather long lesson on stuff I find less important for a 2nd lesson: telling the time and the date. If only each set of grammar explanations had their own exercises right after? But no, we have to go through several dialogues, read a lot of grammar notes and then do a whole bunch of exercises at once. By the time I come to the exercises I won't remember what I read about telling the time at the beginning of the lessons. Oh well, it's not only Hewitt's fault, most of the language textbooks are like that, and this is the reason I praise that well-known French series and pray for the day they'll release a Georgian edition (which is not in their plans afaik). 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

A) I think a few languages use "live" for staying at a hotel. Isn't German one of them? I'm not sure in Georgian, though. B) Yep, ხნით is instrumental. C) This literally means, "Sorry, but already I planned something". დავგეგმე is the aorist (i.e. simple past) of დაგეგმავს for 1st person singular, and რაღაც is "something" in the nominative case, which is used for objects in the aorist (because the subject will be in the ergative case). I know what you mean about Hewitt. By the time you get to the later chapters, he spends so much time on irregularities of obscure verbs that you will never use, you completely forget what the basic rule was in the first place. There is some great stuff in his book, but sadly it is pretty much impossible to find unless you know what you are looking for. I would definitely recommend Kiziria to start with, and only go back to Hewitt for review when you've reached an intermediate level. 2 persons have voted this message useful |
