My thoughts on what should be counted and what shouldn't.
Eating a steak = 15 films
Eating a sandwich = minus 5 films of your list
Wherever I am on the leaderboard I win everything and get all badges, medals, the like.
My reward. Someone on this website will 'infuse me' with the knowledge of 15 languages
of my choice, and thus I'll be able to use these languages with no problem whatsoever.
In fact i'll be so good that Michael Jordan, Bill Clinton (my hero), and Michael
Jackson will all personally congratulate me. Michael Jackson will in fact reveal
himself to have not died and he will do this with 2pac shakur because they will both be
so impressed with my achievements.
Oh and if I so much as look at a website it's instantly worth 95 pages of reading no
matter what language it's in.
Word up

I think counting all our languages together also fits better with the marathon and not sprint idea. It keeps the challenge from turning into an elitist "make progress in a big European language you're B2 in" (or watch K-dramas :)). It feels really unfair, I'd have honestly spent those 4 months differently and set different goals if this change had been announced in advance. |

Wow, somehow I feel like that was directly aimed at me. (Can someone tell me what the difference is between watching lots of Kdramas and watching lots of football games? Is it the same difference between reading real BOOKS and reading spam?) |
|
|
No, it was about the fact that by the new ranking, the current top-10 or so are all learning Spanish, German, French or Korean. Not just you, everyone. The difference from football is that I may watch 10 matches over the weekend, but they'll all be in different languages, and I don't see how this counts less than having a movie marathon in one language. I also find there's more flow with watching sports than with watching unrelated stuff.
I'm tired of this nagging about my spam analysis job (which is a thing of the past anyway), but let me just say that it's actually very similar to reading magazines and newspapers. Many of the messages were not even spam but legitimate emails with various newsletters and so on that I had to handle accordingly.
@Expugnator, bilingual books definitely count, as long as you actually read the whole text in both languages and not just use one for reference. For interlinear translations, the easiest is to figure out the percentage of L1. For example Ilya Frank's method/layout is basically one paragraph with translations within the text, then the same paragraph repeated without the translations. If you use it as intended and reread every paragraph, 2/3 of the book is in L2. In e-texts it's also possible to remove the Latin letters via search and see how much text is left. If your book is printed, use your best judgement, as Cristina always says.

dejá vu btw. or however you spell it.
Funny, some say I set the bar too high and others say my challenges aren't Super enough. I'd like to stress that I'm not upset because with my own ranking. This also makes it look like learning only one language at a time is the best solution, and within the Super Challenge, finishing one language at a time. But these crazy sprints are for the 6WC or Tadoku, not long-term challenges. Last time I finished basically all my challenges in the final week of December, because for me this challenge is more about consistency. Sprints in one language=neglect in another. Challenges shouldn't promote neglect.
I'd be happy if Kerrie was ranked higher than me because she's read more, but not because the 20 films that Anya and I watched were spread over several languages.
I also don't think anyone completing 100/100 should automatically have a place on the clouds. How about those that complete their Duper, Mega or whatever challenges? If you think counting nearly all my listening and reading gives me an advantage, just count it too. And if at the point of saturation you switch to other things, not to other languages, that's not my fault. It's a fact that almost all of us registered with more than one language.

Nope, I mean the 4 months between the challenges. I would've spent them reading in languages in which I have no hope or desire of getting more than one star. And I'd not be doing a Swedish 6WC now if I knew it would disadvantage me.

The challenge wasn't changed at all, so there's nothing that could suddenly put you at a
disadvantage. Yes, there was a slight change in how the bot will rank people, but it's
definitely fairer now, so that somebody who completed the challenge (100 books and movies
in one language) is at the top. I don't see any problem with that.
Also, the redesign looks great!

Dear all,
Please remember the following.
1. You are in this to have fun
2. You are in this to be motivated to study more, specifically watching more movies and series, and read more
books.
3. The Super Challenge is not designed for world domination or your life's domination, but to be a support
group for those of us who wanted to try something crazy.
4. Life is not totally fair. Neither is the Super Challenge. Some of us are more advanced, have more time etc.
I do not have the power to change that.
5. I have done everything in my power to make this as motivational as possible. I will not meet everyone's
expectations. That is not humanly possible.
6. All the bickering is draining me of energy. I know that I am not alone in that.
7. I STRONGLY recommended that you do as few languages as possibly. One, two or three at the very most.
I still do. You have absolute freedom when it comes to revising your goals at any time.
8. Do not let your life revolve around the SC. Use it to lift you up, not to tear you down.
9. You are in this to be motivated.
10. You are in this to have fun.
So many people have contributed in so many wonderful ways in this second SC, Surrealix creating the bot,
Kerrie creating the Facebook page, BAnna the Wiki-Page, Jeffers being the voice of reason, Serpent and
Kerrie answering questions when I am
not available, and many others who have given of their time and their humour and their knowledge.
I wish you all a great SC and some great months where you as a team effort can focus on your TL. Good
luck. You are all language athletes.

For me it's a major change. See the hypothetical example from one of the links: reading a total of 100 books in 3 languages becomes less "worthy" than 99 in one, or even 50 in one.
Imagine if the 6 week challenge bot did the opposite and made the totals column the main basis for sorting. Will the challenge still be the same? I don't think so.
More importantly, Cristina had her say on that last time.
edit: and again while I was posting :) did you see the change to the bot and what made you change your mind?

I don't caré what anybody else does; I care what I do. I hope I can finish. I don't care if I come in last, which is a good thing considering the limited amount of time and energy I can devote to this. I thank the people who have organized this.
