So I was wondering what people think of counting TV shows in your native language with
subtitles in your target language as books? (I'm talking watching VOSTFR for me.) I'm
working out how many pages to count by multiplying the minutes by 150 (to account for
the average 150-180wpm rate of TV) and then dividing that by 250 (to account for the
average 250wpp in novels). This also seems to be a pretty accurate representation when
I compare it to my novel reading rate. I've always found watching TV like this to be
helpful and although a slight stretch, to still be in line with the aim of the
challenge to expose yourself to a lot of the written and spoken target language over a
long period.
I also use subtitles usually when watching TV anyway as I have ear-drum problems that
make watching TV a bit difficult, so being able to count this as reading (as I really
do use the French subtitles) just makes sense for me but I'm wondering what others
think? (I would have just done it anyway but I don't want to be 'unfairly' advantaging
myself by counting things that others don't!)

Cristina said it no longer counts :/ You can count that as movies though.
It also counts for Tadoku, at the rate of 5 min = 1 page. Tadoku is currently on.

Ok. So guys, are you up for a little June mini challenge?
The challenge is the following:
--------------------------------------
Do as much reading/watching in your main target language (or chose one if they are in no particular priority)
as you can in one weekend.
--------------------------------------
- You can do this weekend from right now, until midnight Sunday, or any other week end in June from Friday
17.00 until 9 o'clock Sunday.
- When you read, see how long it takes you to read one page.
- When you watch, try to estimate how much you understand (10%, 30%)
We will do this again regularly, so try to be as accurate as you can.
- Register your results in the Update thread on Sunday or Monday.
If you do not know whether you might get more done in a weekend later in the month, you can always
register another weekend later, the weekend where you get the most done is the one which counts.
Go,go,go!

Um, why is one of the options until midnight on Sunday, and the other one until just 9pm? That's waaaaay too early :/
But great idea otherwise!
Also, seems like the books/movies have balanced out a bit? It would be cool to have the actual numbers, maybe in the "about" part along with the days left etc.

That is a brilliant idea! Unfortunately I will be taking my daughter to see 1 Direction (I don't like 1D, but I do love my daughter who loves them). So that's half a day gone. I'll try it another weekend.
And may I say, it's nice to see your presence here. I was getting a little worried...

I enjoy doing language-intensive weekends, and my Italian could use a little push. I'm
in!
(Though I have no idea how to gauge my comprehension rate of anything. I'll make a good
faith attempt)

I probably would have picked Italian to give a boost to it this weekend, but I read the post after just having watched a French film, so I figured what the hell. I'll make it a French booster weekend!
Thanks for even more encouragement Solfrid Cristin!

You can always have an Italian weekend later in the month :) I'll do at least Spanish and Italian, maybe also German.
