Yeah, I feel like that every time I start a new book. By the time I get near the end of a book, I'm understanding 30-40% of what is going on (mainly because I don't keep up with putting words in the SRS), but when I start a new book, it's like I don't know any words at all.
-- Today, added 25 new cards to the Japanese and Korean decks. I would've added more, but tomorrow is a long day at school, so I don't have much time to SRS at home. -- Been addicted to Supreme Team, Dynamic Duo, and Epik High lately. Chatting more with Koreans and Japanese (still 99% English with Japanese people...for now) and watching a little less TV in both languages, partly because all classes seem to get busy around the same time.
Just wanna say 1500 cards in my Korean deck now. Trying to learn as much vocab as I possibly can, which is the main factor when I cannot comprehend a sentence now instead of grammar (though that's weak too.) -- I'm focusing on making more clips of actors' voices I'm trying to imitate, and listen to those clips going to school instead of music all the time. Finally narrowed down my list to three people in both languages. Not doing anything language related today aside from SRS and watching shows. My English paper needs more fixing than anticipated, and then homework and studying for other classes.
Decided to ditch SRS for school classes. Wasn't working out very well (well, adding 300 cards in two days, only giving me days to try to remember stuff I barely know isn't going to work very well.) I don't know why I tried using it anyway, since I have a good GPA anyway just by studying everyday. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Re: our previous conversation about 석/넉 vs 셋/넷...
I watched Strong Heart episode 5 today (subbed) and the translator notes mentioned that 넉 잔 (4 glasses) was "country dialect" which isn't commonly in use in "standard" Korean. 강호동 was using that phrase as an example of something he had to stop saying to "speak correctly" (following 티파니의 story about not knowing Korean as well as the rest of 소녀시대). That said, later in the show one of the female guests used 석 잔 (3 glasses) a few times during her story and there wasn't any real reaction to it (though I did notice that the on-screen Korean was written 세 잔 instead). 1 person has voted this message useful | |

I don't know if it's exactly a country dialect or not. In Elementary Korean, they also give you those alternatives for 3 and 4 while using counters that start with certain consonants, but I rarely hear/see 석/넉.

True...the "country dialect" interpretation could have easily been the translator's opinion (though 강호동 started out that dialog by noting he was from the "countryside"). Regardless, the existence of that dialog in the show at all seems to indicate that 석 and 넉 aren't considered the "normal" words to use for 3 and 4 (at least in "standard Seoul dialect" anyway). Could depend on the speaker. In a book I'm reading, I've seen "석 달" (3 months) a couple of times.
-- Watching dramas, breaking down the shows into chunks instead of planning to watch it all at once. I've been a bit busier with school lately, so I needed to do that. Did some SRS, but do some more before I leave for school and when I get home, and might add some cards in the SRS decks when I get back. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Finally caught up on all of my SRSing. I had over 200 cards show up on the same day. Must have come from that day I added 100 cards. I did add a katakana deck, because I have a hard time with half of them.
Last night, I chatted with someone on Shared Talk and the convo was 95% Korean. I was happy. Today, I've watched quite a bit of TV, so I'll be listening passively later on while I start working on my next paper for English (and I will be so happy when December comes around. I'll never have to take a writing course again!) So, my plans for the rest of the day: Learn some kanji Add some cards to Korean and Japanese decks Reply to a Korean penpal (I really need to get a Japanese penpal) Start new journal entries for Korean and Japanese Make more clips of the actors I'm imitating Wait for the next "My Girlfriend is a Gumiho" episode to come out (Thursday, you're so far away) Watch another episode of Liar Game 1 person has voted this message useful |
