I PASSED MY EXAM IN RUSSIAN LEVEL A2!!!!

A few weeks ago I was confident that A2 would not be too difficult to pass, but after going through some old
exams, I was starting to really get cold feet. I was told that the online test I had taken placed me between A1
and A2, the administration at the school thought it wiser to go for A1 to ensure success, and my teacher was
getting more and more worried, and said that with God's help I might pass.

I decided however to go for A2 anyway, because having a paper which said that I was at A1 didn't feel like
much of an accomplishment, and I figured I had nothing to lose. So I dug my heels in, studied like mad, and
today I got my results.

It was a 3 hour exam, and it consisted of 5 parts:

Grammar
Usage
Writing
Listening comprehension
Speaking

I had to have an average of 65% to pass, and I just scraped through in grammar and writing, (65%), I was at
70% in usage, 74% in speaking, and 90% in listening comprehension ( so at least some good have come
from
my 9 billion hours listening to Pimsleur etc. :-)

I am soooo relieved. I would have felt really bad after all the work I have put in if I could not even manage an
A2, but I must say that my respect for A2 as a level has risen considerably. I used to think of it as the level
right above knowing next to nothing. Boy, was I wrong. Either the Russians are extremely demanding, or I
was way too naive, but I cannot remember the last time I worked so hard for anything at all.

What bothers me a tad, is that I know that there is no way I could pass a B1 exam in the foreseeable future. I
sat in on the oral exam of a guy who did B1, and to my ears he was next to fluent. He made two-three
mistakes in 10 minutes, and otherwise he was laughing, joking and flirting with our censor ( it was a young
woman).

In fact, if I were to take another exam, I would be more likely to do an A2 again, trying to raise my scores,
rather than attempting a B1. The difference seems like the difference of taking down an apple, and attempting
at taking down the moon.

Anyhow, I am super happy that I passed. I can now say that I have the language skills which are necessary
to become a Russian citizen. Not that I will, but it is nice to know that I can :-)

That's great, Cristina! Congratulations!

And thanks on the input about the levels requirements. Now I start to wonder that it may
indeed take some years till I reach B1 in any of the non-romance languages (leave alone
in Russian itself).

Maybe they are stricter than the CEFR?
